Page 4: Week One SEC Notes

The Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament returns for a 14th straight year to Regions Park in the south-Birmingham city of Hoover, Ala., May 25-29.

The SEC Tournament will continue to follow an eight-team double elimination format that is modeled after the CollegeWorld Series. The tournament field includes the top teams from the SEC’s Eastern and Western Divisions plus six at-largebids based on conference winning percentage.

Regions Park serves as home of the Double-A Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox) of the Southern League. Thestadium also serves as a home field to the nationally renowned Hoover Buccaneer high school football program.

Located eight miles south of Birmingham, Regions Park is regarded by many sports experts as one of the best of its kind in the nation. It seats 10,800 forbaseball, but can accommodate over 16,000 when the patio, banquet and side grassy areas are used. The stadium also houses 12 suites and state-of-the-artdressing and training rooms. Wireless internet access was added in 2004, concourse and signage renovation was done in 2005 and a second-level pressboxexpansion, new stadium seating and an exterior facelift in 2007 completed a $4.5 million renovation project. A new HD video scoreboard was added in 2008,while the SEC introduced the nation to a ‘pitch clock’ in 2010.

The 2010 SEC Baseball Tournament, held in Hoover, Ala. drew over 126,000 fans and nearly 10,000 per game, both record-highs for the event. Five timestime in the last eight years the tournament has surpassed the six-digit mark in total attendance. The 2008 event drew over 124,000 fans.

The SEC will keep its baseball tournament in Hoover through 2011 under the current contract. The host site of the event beyond 2011 has not yet beendecided.

2010 SEC ATTENDANCE LEADERS

As of June 15 (Final)

Year after year, the SEC continues to be the benchmark in paid college

baseball attendance. The SEC and its member schools own virtually all regu-

lar season, conference tournament, NCAA Regional and Super Regional

attendance records. The SEC and one of its institutions have led the NCAA in

total and average attendance for the last 13 seasons in a row, and 18 of the

last 24 years. In 2005, the SEC set a goal to reach the 1.5 million attendance

mark for the first time in league history and came within 10,000 fans of reach-

ing that goal. The drive was renewed and continued for the 2006 season, a

season which saw over 1.6 million fans at SEC ballparks. In 2007, the SEC

drew nearly 1.7 million and averaged for 4,000 per game for first time in his-

tory. In 2008 the league drew over 1.6 million and 4,000 per game again. In

2009, attendance records were smashed as total numbers neared 1.9 million,

an average of almost 4,700 per game.Team *Home Dates Total AverageLSU 38 404,916 10,655Arkansas 39 302,934 7,767Ole Miss 34 231,818 6,818South Carolina 36 241,582 6,710Mississippi State 33 194,094 5,881Alabama 27 112,210 4,155Florida 37 126,195 3,410Auburn 38 101,495 2,670Georgia 28 73,734 2,633Vanderbilt 32 72,602 2,268Kentucky 30 55,785 1,859Tennessee 33 53,777 1,629

The Southeastern ConferenceSetting the Standard for Intercollegiate Athletics

in

Baseballhe Southeastern Conference, with its storied 77-year his-tory of athletic achievements and academic excellence, has built perhaps the greatest tradition of intercollegiate

competition in baseball of any league in the country since itsinception in 1933.

The SEC posted another tremendous season in 2010 as the con-ference had eight teams earn selection to NCAA postseason playwith South Carolina and Florida advancing to the College WorldSeries. A SEC squad has now appeared in the College WorldSeries 25 of the last 26 years. South Carolina advanced to andwon the National Championship Series, marking the sixth timesince 2000 an SEC team played for the national championship inOmaha and third in a row. LSU won the SEC tournament titleover Alabama. Florida won the SEC regular-season title with a 22-8 conference record, while Auburn won the Western Divisionwith a 20-10 record.

The Southeastern Conference boasts 11 former NationalPlayers of the Year (Vanderbilt’s David Price won in 2007), tenBaseball America Coach of the Year and nine Collegiate BaseballCoach of the Year honors. Also, 143 student-athletes have beennamed first-team All-American, four of which came in 2010.

Three SEC players were taken in the first round of the 2010Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, held Tuesday in New YorkCity, including the fifth pick overall. Ole Miss’ Drew Pomeranzwas picked fifth by the Cleveland Indians. Zack Cox of Arkansaswas selected 25th by the St. Louis Cardinals, while LSU’sAnthony Ranaudo was 39th by the Boston Red Sox. With thosethree selections this year, the SEC has now had a first round selec-tion in each year since 1991 and 83 total in the first round dur-ing that time.

The SEC drew a record of nearly two million fans to its on-cam-pus ballparks in 2010, the fifth year in a row to draw over 1.6 mil-lion. Eight SEC teams drew in excess of 100,000 fans to theirparks in 2010. The SEC averaged a record 4,867 fans per game in2010, the fourth straight year to exceed the 4,000 mark. SouthCarolina and LSU (the last two national champions) both openednew parks in 2009, while Ole Miss’ recent expansion took capac-ity over 10,000. Four teams, all in the SEC West, can now housecrowds of over 10,000. The SEC Baseball Tournament drew anew record-high 126,071 fans in 2010, despite lengthy rain andlightning delays on three of the five days of the event. A newaverage per game attendance of 9,698 was also established at thisyear’s tournament. The SEC Championship Game, broadcastnationally on EPSN2 for the first time, drew 13,327 fans.

TT

Notes• The SEC has sent 40 teams to the College World Series since

1990. That was accomplished despite no SEC teams making thefield in 1992. LSU has been to Omaha 12 times, Georgia andFlorida five times, Mississippi State and South Carolina four times, while Alabama and Tennessee have been three times each.Auburn has been twice, while Arkansas advanced in 2004 and2009.
