Week 8 Term 4 2019

Dear Parents and Carers

It is very exciting to be approaching the end of another school year but there is absolutely no slowing down here at

Tamworth West. This week staff are participating in planning days. This involves analysing data from across 2019,

completing some professional learning around literacy and numeracy teaching and planning for 2020. In addition, students

are keenly preparing for West Factor and Presentation Day. We will all be looking forward to a well-deserved rest come the

last day of term.

Student Representative Council Elections

I am so proud of the 25 year 5 students who presented their speeches last week on why they believe they would make an

excellent school captain for 2020. The speeches were outstanding and the manner in which the candidates conducted

themselves was exemplary. At the conclusion of the speeches, students from years 2—6 voted.

At the 3—6 assembly last Thursday, I had the pleasure of announcing the ten successful nominees who were named to our

Student Representative Council for next year. I also had the opportunity to invite the students who were unsuccessful to

join a new leadership initiative for 2020 - the Student Wellbeing Leadership Team.

Congratulations to the following ten children who were elected to be members of the Student Representative Council in

2020.

Our captains and vice captains for 2020 will be named during our Presentation Day ceremony.

I look forward to working to help develop the leadership skills of all our wonderful year 5 leaders.

Sporting House Captains and Vice Captains for 2020

In 2020, students in year 6 who are not part of the Student Representative Council will be eligible to nominate for Sports

Captain or Vice Captain. Mrs Spinks will meet with all eligible year 6 students on Friday 31 January 2020 to collect

nominations. Voting will take place on Monday 3 February 2020 and the successful students will be announced on Tuesday

4 February 2020.

The Leaders’ Induction Ceremony will be held on Friday 7 February 2020. Further details will be published at the

commencement of the new school year.

NSW Teachers Federation Industrial Action

The NSW Teachers Federation has announced that it will hold a stop work meeting from 8:30 am on Thursday 5 December

2019.

As only a small number of staff have indicated that they will be attending the meeting, parents are encouraged to send

students to school as normal on this day.

P&C

Our wonderful P&C will host our annual Carols in the Playground next Wednesday evening

from 6:00 pm. It would be wonderful if you could join us for this wonderful evening.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for their very kind and generous

donation towards our new Stage 3 outdoor furniture. We can’t wait for it to arrive!

Big change to 2020 Newsletters

We all know that when it comes to creating a sustainable future, everyone has their part to play - and that includes schools.

There are a number of reasons for implementing a change to our current newsletter:

The impact of Australia’s paper use goes beyond just trees. It takes 24 trees and 90,000 litres of water to produce one

tonne of printer paper, as well as large amounts of electricity and oil. Paper that isn’t recycled also contributes to

landfill and pollutants in the air. By going to a digital newsletter we will directly contribute to reducing waste, water and

power use - and providing a cleaner and more sustainable world for our children in the future.

By using a digital communication platform, information will flow faster and is always in the right hands - which in turn

can boost productivity and save valuable time.

The benefits of going paperless will also help our school save money. Between buying reams of paper to photocopying,

filing and printing, the costs of using paper quickly add up - in fact, we estimate that our school spends between

$8000—$10000 a year on publishing our newsletter in its current form.

From 2020 our newsletter will be available on our school website, through ENews and on our

school Facebook page. Of course families who do not have access to technology will be able to

request a hard copy of the newsletter through the front office.

Presentation Day

Please remember that Presentation Day rehearsal and our annual ceremony is on next Thursday and Friday. A permission

note was sent home with students last week and is due back to classroom teachers by next Tuesday 10 December 2019.

There is no cost associated with this whole school change of routine.

Holiday Times and Seasons Greetings

The 2019 school year ends for students on Wednesday 18 December 2019. Teachers will be involved in a School

Development Day (SDD) on Thursday 19 December 2019, and as we have already completed our final SDD earlier in the

year, the school will close from Friday 20 December 2019.

Teachers return to school on Tuesday 27 January 2020 and students return on Wednesday 28 January 2019.

I wish you all the warmest greetings for the holiday season and best wishes for happiness in the new year. Thank you for an

excellent 2019 and I look forward to working with you again in 2020.

Have an awesome week.

Mrs Terrie Kay

Principal

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS (ICAS) 36 students from across the school participated in the ICAS assessments organised by the University of NSW in term 3. For the first time all assessments other than writing were online. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with a range of assessments. Thank you Mrs Deaves for coordinating these assessments and ensuring all students had settled test conditions. It was exciting to see a number of students take part in multiple assessments. I would like to make special mention of the following students for achieving a merit, credit or distinction result.

Travis Mumford Credit—Maths Joseph Reading Merit—Maths and Spelling; Credit—English, Digital Technologies and Writing. Lexi Crelley Credit—Writing Leila Strickland Credit—Spelling; Distinction—Writing

These marks correspond to the following grades. HD - High Distinction: top 1% of students; D – Distinction: the next 10% of students; C – Credit: the next 25% of participants; M - Merit: the next 10% of participants; P – Participation: for all remaining students.

Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) Meeting Tamworth West will host the local AECG meeting this afternoon, Wednesday 4 December 2019. This is a group of community members and representatives of educators from across Tamworth who discuss supporting Aboriginal education and Aboriginal students in our schools. End of Year Combined Christmas Scripture Service This Thursday morning , 5 December, will be the last scripture class for 2020. I would like to acknowledge the dedication of the volunteers who come in each week to teach scripture. Thank you. This Thursday will be a special Christmas service in the school hall for all students in Catholic and Protestant Scripture and will run during the normal scripture time. This week will also be the last week of SUPA for the year. SUPA club will continue in 2020 and will commence early in

term 1, as will scripture lessons. All students will be placed in the same scripture group unless a note is provided by

parents. Kindergarten students will be placed in a scripture group depending on the information provided on the

enrolment form. A note will be sent home for any students who do not have an allocated scripture or non-scripture

group.

2R MADE CARDS FOR THE FIRE FIGHTERS! 2R were so moved by all the fire fighters who came into Tamworth to help fight the fires, we decided to make some cards

for the fire fighters, and tell them how much we appreciate their amazing work! We were so excited when one of the fire

fighters contacted Mrs Rankmore and sent us this message:

I was part of the RFS region West strike team 1. Our team had firefighters from Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong, Cootamundra, Dubbo, Lightning Ridge and as far west as Wilcannia, near Broken Hill. We were part of the containment crew. We back burned around the observatory to protect it from the coming fire. We had

crew members patrolling the edge ready for possible spot fires, blacking out (when all remaining flames, hot spots and smoking timber are extinguished) on chainsaw

duty.

We fire fighters would like to thank you for your amazing and beautiful cards. They brought many smiles to our faces and your messages brought a tear to many an eye. We are so honoured to be able to help you and your community. We were amazed with all the amazing donations of food and COFFEE (Firefighters LOVE

their coffee) that the Tamworth community gave us. Your cards were the perfect ending to a very long day. You guys are our heroes!

Maybe I will see you on the fire ground when you are older. Lots of high fives,

Region West Strike TEAM 1

They also sent us some photos of their work! Thank you Strike team 1, and thank you to the class of 2R for being

such special global citizens!

A message from our General Manager Flexischools

I am writing to apologise for the difficulties and challenges which you and your staff will no doubt have experienced on

Friday 29 November 2019. Due to issues, parents may have experienced placing orders using our mobile app or mobile

browser.

While we continue to investigate the cause of this issue with our cloud computing provider, we understand it was

unrelated to the load on the system on busy Friday mornings and it was an unfortunate coincidence that the issue

occurred at that time. We do not expect this issue to reoccur.

As the term is drawing to an end I would just like to let you all know that there will be limited food and drinks available

at the canteen for lunch orders. There will be alternate options available for students with their orders if the food

chosen is out of stock.
