Week #7 Quarter 2 (11/25-11/28) (calendar site)Monday, 11/25
Have out: Properties of Matters Notes
Matter Worksheet
Activities/Assignments:1.Properties of Matters Notes2.Matter Worksheet
Homework:
Chemistry unit test,
stamp sheet and
notebooks due 11/ 27
I.S. Learning Goal:•I can describe the properties of matter
Daily Question: What is matter?
Mixture
Made of two or more substances- elements, compounds or both- that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined.
Heterogeneous Mixture
You can see the different parts
Homogeneous Mixture
So evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts
Heat- transfer of energy –
Exothermic- heat energy EXITS the system- ex. Combustion, burning
http://www.graspr.com/videos/potassium-permanganate-and-glycerine-2
SaltAn example of an exothermic reaction is the mixture of sodium metal and chlorine gas which yields table salt.
2Na(s) + Cl2(g) 2NaCl(s) + energy
http://www.schooltube.com/video/2fa9cb3e39064832b31d/Reaction-of-Sodium-and-Chlorine
Endothermic- heat energy ENTERS the system- surroundings usually feel cooler
ex. Cold packs, melting ice
How do cold packs work?
The outer pouch contains water. The inner pouch contains ammonium-nitrate.
When you “pop” the inner pouch, the chemical reaction absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. This is an endothermic reaction.
The temperature of the solution falls to about 35 F for 10 to 15 minutes.
