From the PrincipalFathers’ Day

This morning saw many fathers

accompany their sons to school and

enjoy breakfast at the College. It was an

opportunity for the boys to acknowledge

their dads and to ensure that they had

a great start to what we hope will be a

memorable weekend for them. Thank you

to the many staff and the members of the

Parent Council who cooked and served

the breakfast – some starting as early as

5.30am!

There are many virtues that dads can

instil in their sons as a result of good

parenting but there is little doubt

that those which are modelled will be

remembered long after those which are

imparted by word. Integrity, honesty

and faithfulness are gifts that a man

shares with his wife while they are being

simultaneously learned by his son. It is

only through his own good example that

a father can expect to enjoy the pride and

satisfaction of watching his son mature

into someone who believes in himself and

leads a full life.

Of course, the task for fathers is rarely

uncomplicated and there sometimes

seems to be a critical flaw in generational

understanding. This was summed

up by American clergyman, Charles

Wadsworth when he wrote, “by the time

a man realises that maybe his father

was right, he usually has a son who

thinks he is wrong.” Perhaps the secret

for dads is to accept that the perfect

father does not exist and that our task

is to ensure that the critical moments

we share with our sons hold enough

lessons for their lifetime. Over this

weekend, I hope that all of the fathers

in our school community are reminded

of the love of their families and the

value placed upon their good work.

AFL - WA Schoolboys Cup

Congratulations to the members of the

Year 8/9 Football team on making the

Grand Final of the WA Schoolboys Cup.

This game will be played as a curtain

raiser to the West Coast versus Adelaide

contest this Saturday at Paterson’s

Stadium. The bouncedown for the boys’

game will be at 3.30pm and anyone

attending the AFL game may like to come

early to support our team.

This game is the culmination of a

competition involving more than 350

schools across the state and is the

only football competition open to

every school in WA. Our own team has

defeated metropolitan and country

schools to reach this stage. We wish

all of the boys and their coaches

the best of luck for Saturday.

Music Awards

Congratulations to all of the boys

currently participating in the Catholic

Schools’ Performing Arts Festival. Further

to last week’s announcement, the College

has recently been notified that Tim

Arnott (Woodwind), Thomas Mansfield

(Woodwind) and Tony Ziegelaar (Brass)

have each received Honourable Mentions

in the Instrumental Solo section of the

Festival. Alessandro Monaco (Woodwind)

received a Certificate of Merit in the same

section. These awards duly recognise the

outstanding talents and efforts of these

young musicians and their tutors.

CBC Family Mass

Among the many significant liturgies that

occur at the College each year, the two

Family Masses provide the opportunity

for our community to come together on

a voluntary basis to celebrate our

common sense of purpose.

This is a further invitation to all families

and friends of CBC to attend our second

and final Family Mass for this year to

be celebrated on Saturday 31 August

at 6.00pm at St Patrick’s Basilica. As

a College which prides itself on being

inclusive, we look forward to welcoming

regular and infrequent churchgoers,

Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

All generations of your family are

welcome!

CBC Fremantle has a progressive Information Communication Technology

programme. At CBC, laptops are issued in Year 7 and integrated into the

curriculum until Year 12. Access to current technologies encourages active

while achieving their academic goals.

While our children are keeping up to date with the latest technology,

Head of ICT Mr John Rear understands the concerns of parents. Come

CBC is prepared for the challenges of ICT in the hands of our children.

This week marked the beginning of Edmund Rice Productions,

a new project championing the rights of those in need of social

justice.

Year 9 students, Keane Bourke and Alex Natale, challenged

Greens Senator Scott Ludlum on the Greens’ policy on asylum

seekers. The outcome was an interview that should be heard

by all of our community as it contrasted sharply with much that

we’ve been hearing in the media so far. The interview can be

heard at soundcloud.com/#edmund-rice-productions

Several interviews also took place at the Edmund Rice Centre

Mirrabooka that helps refugees and other needy people. These

will shortly be made available.

Last Sunday, 42 CBC students arrived at City Beach prepared to

serve the Perth community. Starting in the early morning dark,

the boys spent seven hours unpacking and distributing drinks

to nearly 50,000 thirsty City to Surf competitors. Most found

themselves with blistered hands and sore shoulders early on, but

they didn’t let this curb their energy or enthusiasm, continuing to

work tirelessly throughout the day.

The students were a credit to the College, not only because

they gave up a large portion of their weekend to volunteer their

time, but also because of the responsible manner in which they

undertook the task and the positive ways that they interacted

with the public.

A big thank you to all of the students involved in this activity and

to Ms Marriann O’Neill and Mr David John for their assistance.

Year 12 Academic Prefect, Ben Anandappa, had only just returned

to CBC after winning bronze at the 45th International Chemistry

Olympiad in Moscow when he volunteered to help others gain

the same experience.

Ben sat the Australian Science Olympiad exams in 2012 and was

selected to participate in a two week summer school at Monash

University. Ben was then chosen as one of the top four students

to represent Australia in Moscow.

Inspired by this experience, Ben founded a Chemistry Olympiad

preparation programme and on Tuesday afternoons voluntarily

taught key concepts from the Australian Science Olympiad

Syllabus, including many Year 12 level topics and beyond, and

worked through the past five years of exam papers.

On 7 August, Year 11 students, Mathew Thomas, Liam Romano,

Solomon Wright and Anthony Iannantuoni, sat the two hour

Olympiad exam.

Congratulations to Matthew, Liam, Solomon and Anthony for their

keen participation throughout the year and well done also to

Ben for his organisation of the preparation classes. We hope to

continue to run the classes next year to build on this initiative.

There are now less than four weeks until

the tour and we are in the final stages of

preparation. Our tour jackets arrived this

week and look very artistic. Thank you

to Yusef Hourani who worked with Ms

Francis to brainstorm potential designs

and fonts, and also to ex-parent Mrs

Allison Cormack who worked tirelessly

with her design company to make the

logo and printing possible. The tour

participants will be presented with their

jackets at the official College farewell

assembly on Tuesday 17 September.

Our Tour Blog site is also in the process

of a 2013 facelift. The site has been a

past tours and we hope it continues

to be a hit this time. The travellers

can post images and information at

different locations on tour so family,

friends and staff can see what we have

been up to and are also invited to post

comments. This is a fun and visual way

to communicate with home and share

our adventures. When the site is up

and running it will be accessible via the

College website.

Finally, we would like to thank all the

boys for their continual involvement in

the afterschool workshops. Wednesdays

have been intense workout drills with Mr

Burgio training the boys for their Roman

Soccer Tournament and Ms Francis

touching on the history of Italy. Thursdays

have been a buzz of excitement with Ms

Calanni preparing the boys for the streets

of Italia with essential tips in ordering

food and purchasing items.

Our final meeting is set for Week 9 on

Thursday 19 September. A letter will

follow in the next week outlining all the

details.

The CBC Junior Football team will be

playing in the Grand Final of the Year 8

and 9 School Boys Cup against Darling

Range Sports College on Saturday

afternoon. The game will be a curtain-

raiser to the West Coast and Adelaide

game at Patersons Stadium.

This is a great achievement by the boys

and all members of the squad should be

very proud of their efforts throughout

the group stages and finals to put us in

this position. The competition begins

with more than 350 schools and is the

only football competition involving every

school in WA including PSA, football

specialist and country schools. A win

on Saturday will claim CBC the title of

being the number one football school

in the state and all the boys are very

eager to take this opportunity. CBC has

been runners-up in the competition in

2010 and 2011 and the boys are looking

forward to becoming the first team

from the College to win the prestigious

competition.

On Wednesday the boys received a taste

of glory when they were able to hold the

2013 AFL Premiership Cup and they will

be hoping to hold up their own cup on

Saturday night.
