Thank you to the P & C for organising this event. Thank you also to parents who manned the gates, sold tickets, provided lights or helped with the barbeque and canteen. A huge thank you to all our families who joined us: It was a great opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy a wonderful night. Year 5 students who are interested in being a school leader in 2013 are currently spending some of their free time looking at what leadership involves. They are also preparing their speeches at school and will soon present their ideas to the staff and students at assembly. It is wonderful to see the large number of our dynamic children who are so willing to give up their time for the benefit of fellow students and the school as a whole. These children all are great examples of our school motto ‘ Deeds Not Words’ and our school rules of Care, Courtesy and Co- operation. Once again I need to remind parents that it is unacceptable to confront or discipline someone else’s children at school. If you have a concern about another child please contact the school and allow us to address the issue. The school has a range of strategies that can be, and are used. Please understand that the welfare and privacy of each child is paramount. Staff will always follow up concerns raised but will never discuss what strategies are used with anyone other than the immediate family. Minor issues are dealt with by the class teacher. More serious issues are followed up by the supervisor for that age group. While Mrs Baldwin is on leave the supervisors have changed: Ms Gray—Years 5 & 6 Ms West—Year 3 & 4 Mr Shipp—Years 1 & 2 Ms Weeks—Kindergarten Ongoing issues or those of a more serious nature are addressed by the senior executive, Deputy Principals Mr Andoni or Mr Gillett with information passed on the the Principal. Narelle Armour—Principal 2M have been working hard in class. In Literacy we have been learning how to write book responses and reviews. We have been practising writing in paragraphs and concentrating on our sentence structure. In Maths we have created and continued a variety of number patterns and worked on number relationships. We have also explored and manipulated various 2D shapes and angles. This week we have been comparing the duration of events using informal methods and been reading clocks on the hour and half hour. We are all very excited to be going to Sydney on Friday to the Australian Museum. Once again, thank you so much to the wonderful mums and nans who work with me in the classroom. SCHOOL LEADERSHIP 2013 In the coming weeks students from year 5 will be working through the process of being elected as School Leaders for 2013. There will be 2 tiers of leadership available for students to access. The first tier of leadership positions includes School Captains, Prefects and House Captains. Year 5 students who are eligible to nominate for these positions will be required to demonstrate exemplary behaviour during their time at Toukley School particularly in 2012, their commitment to all school activities and skills in working with staff and other students. The first steps in this process will include students writing a basic resume giving previous school participation areas, school representation and awards achieved, as well as how they show their leadership if they were elected. This will form the basis of their first speech and is to be completed at school under the direction of the Deputy Principal. Each child will orally present their resume to Years 4 and 5 at an assembly in Term 4 and students will vote for their preferred candidates to create a final list of students standing for election as a School Leader. Students who are successful in reaching the final stage of the election process will perform a final round of speeches for students in years 2 to 5. School Leaders will be voted for after these speeches by students in years 2-5. Our School Leaders for 2012 have proved to be wonderful role models for students across the school and have set a high standard for our next leadership group to follow.

OLYMPIC DAY What a fantastic turn out for our first ever Olympic Day. It was a really awesome sight to see all the children lined up in their country groups, marching down the path lined with families and teachers. The day began with an Opening Ceremony (including students running with an Olympic Torch). Then our younger (K-2) students participated in a variety of fun activities, and our senior students (3-6) completed their activities after recess. This fabulous day was finished with a Closing Ceremony that would have made the International Olympic Committee proud. Thank you to all our wonderful helpers and supporters for making our day run smoothly and for cheering us on. Karen Gray—Olympic Day Organisor

TERRIFIC OLYMPIC DAY Good work TPS on organising such a great event. The children enjoyed a real fun, interactive day which was clearly evident by their remarks at the end of school. I thought this kind of experience was very constructive for all involved. Tania Cant

KIDS DAY OUT The 13th annual KIDS DAY OUT will be held on Sunday 4th November from 10am until 3:00pm at Kariong Mountains High School. This fantastic fun filled day is proudly sponsored by the Wyong Shire Council, The Australian Regional Development Committee and Kariong Mountains High School as well as many cooperating organisations. This day promotes our wonderful Central Coast and ensures kids and their parents are aware of the fantastic recreational activities available in our region. At KIDS DAY OUT your children will be able to see a magic show, talk to Big Dog and Healthy Harold, watch a science experiment, learn how to juggle, sit on a fire engine and talk to Fireman Sam, participate in Drama and Music Workshops and much, much more. Entry cost is just $2:00. KIDS DAY OUT will be on Rain or Shine. CAKE STALL AND MONEY SNAKE On behalf of the Student representative Council I would like to thank the parents, students and Mrs Starr for making our fundraising event The Cake Stall and Money Snake such a success. This event raised more than $300 to support the student leaders who were raising money for cancer research through their participation in the Relay for Life Walk. A special thank you to Mrs Besant and Mrs Bull for donating dozens of cakes. Jane West IMPACT CENTRE The Central Coast’s newest Community Centre is soon to be opening on Chetwynd Road in Erina (near McDonalds). The Impact Centre will be open to the public 7 days a week and will consist of facilities such as a Cafe and catering service, 24hr gym and wellness centre, a two storey play centre, wedding facilities and large activity warehouse space. An exciting festival will be held on Saturday 27th October from 10am—3pm and will be a fun day for children and families. There will be lots of free children’s activities including passes to the play centre, petting zoo, entertainment and much more. There will also be free giveaways and market stalls and entertainment for the adults too!.

SPECIALIST AIR CONDITIONING AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS

I read the book called “The Ghost of Barton Beach” which is written by Kerri Lane. It’s a story about when twins Sam and Ben went to the beach for a holiday and did some surfing and fishing and there are ghosts. It’s a bad book because I hate that it has ghosts. I think people that like ghosts would like this book. by Eliza O’Louglin I read the book called “Face The Music” which is written by Chris Holland. This story was about a boy who was being bullied by Tiger Simmons and also the little boy could play the piano. I thought the book was great because the children got stuff done to them for what they did. I think this book so not suitable for little kids because you don’t want them to turn into naughty kids. by Jasmine Cant

2M’S BOOK RESPONSES/REVIEWS

I read the book called “The crocodiles Art Exhibition” written by Quinton Hook. It’s a story about a crocodile called Carla who shows her paintings at the show. She was very happy because she was in the newspaper and her painting too. I think it’s a great book . I liked it when she was in the newspaper. I think the friends in my class would like it too because it’s like doing art. by Blake Morrissey I read the book called “Watta Buzz” written by Lisa Scouts. It’s a story about a boy and a girl that lives next door and she loves the little boy. It’s a perfect book because it’s about a good boy I think everyone should read it. by Tammin Dillon-Robinson I read the book called “Eye’ll Be Watching You” written by Terri McLaughlan. The story is about a teacher who has a false eye ball but Scrapper the dog ate it. The boy ended up getting the eye ball back. It’s a good book because it’s funny when the eye ball got stuck on the boys finger. I think my friends in my class would like it because they like dogs and it is funny. by Nikita Hicks
