ANNOUNCING TCS-TV

AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

January 2012 will bring a brand new television studio to the

Middle School at TCS. A team of students will work with Lynn to

create and deliver high quality morning announcements broadcast via

the internet.

The Tech TV Club will meet each morning at 7:15 a.m. to prepare

and rehearse the news program for live broadcast during the morning

announcements at 8:00 a.m. Student interns will learn how to create

and broadcast daily live “network-television-style” news programming

using Adobe’s Visual Communicator software. Internship opportunities

will include many aspects of TV news production including script-

writing, selecting graphics and music, camera operation, formatting the

graphics, directing, working with digital photography, setting up

lighting, checking microphone levels, designing green screen

backgrounds, and much more. Each intern will learn as they go rotating

among various jobs. They will then become the “teacher” as they tutor

the student moving into their job. The students will be involved in the

creative process from concept to broadcast. Each day will be a new

and exciting learning experience.

If you are interested in being a part of this exciting project,

applications will be available when you return from the winter break.

If you have any questions, contact Lynn at [email protected].

December 20, 2011

Hello High School Families,

I wanted to make you aware of a decision our high school staff has made with regard to the use of headphones and music

during tests and exams. First, a little history: years ago we decided to allow some students to use ‘walkmans’ and CD

players during some seatwork and tests (am I dating myself?!). We checked the CD to be sure it was school appropriate

music, we had them lower the volume so it didn’t affect those around them, and all seemed to be fine. As we have grown

and as newer technologies have become more available to our students, more and more students requested this

accommodation, and it is widely accepted as a standard accommodation. We are, however, experiencing some issues with

regard to the use of current music technology that have become problematic.

With the introduction of MP3 players and iPods, we find we have some students who are bobbing heads and singing along

with lyrics which are clearly not appropriate for school, and we will not be screening their entire play list to indicate which

music we feel is appropriate, as that would be intrusive and subjective. In addition, the head bobbing, ‘silent’ singing and

the volume have often become distractions to those students who need a quiet and still testing environment. You can

imagine after a teacher has asked a student to stop dancing in their seat, or please stop humming or mouthing the words

with lips smacking, or lower the volume, the debate that ensues is an additional distraction during an exam. There also

seems to be a trend in more students attempting to ‘tune in’ to their music at times other than what is outlined in our

accommodations for quiet seat work, and we see more attempts by students to isolate and decrease their socialization in our

community before school, at lunch, after lunch, in the halls, after school, etc. We believe that it is critical that they

continue to practice social and interaction skills during these times to stay connected with their peers. In this technology

laden society in which we live, I would dare to offer that this current generation is in danger of losing the art of face to face

communication. You only have to look at the group of adolescents in the restaurant booth next to you sometime over the

break and watch them-heads down, looking at screens, texting people who aren’t even there-instead of talking to each other.

In addition, some of our students have decided that stereo style, recording studio huge, headphones are the new fashion

accessory, to be worn around their necks at all times. We assert that this new fashion trend is not in keeping with business

appropriate attire, unless you are indeed, working in a recording studio or video production environment. In addition, the

advancement of technology has provided opportunities for individuals to record or type test information into the device

and the temptation to use the device for test ‘assistance’ is sometimes overwhelming for students who may be feeling

anxious about their performance. As a result, nationally, educators are faced with new ways for students to cheat, and we

are more in favor of preventative measures and are removing the opportunity for temptation. Finally, many schools,

colleges and post secondary settings will not allow this accommodation for their students taking exams, and we believe that

we should be providing our students with practice for future testing environments.

It is for all of these reasons that we have decided that we will discontinue our current policy of allowing music devices

during assessments. With instructor approval, we will continue to allow music devices (not cell phones) during

independent seat work, as long as they do not create a distraction for others in the class. If you have any questions or

concerns regarding this change in policy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Laura Finnell
