Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday – Monday, January 20th – No School

I cannot tell you how happy I am to have everyone back in the fold!! Of course I enjoyed our holiday break, but the ebb and flow of our campus days is what fills my soul. I miss the energy and interactions after a few days without school. The first week was full of smiling faces and happy greetings as students and staff filled me in on their vacation adventures. Although it does seem as if there was a bad bug going around, most folks enjoyed the time with family and more leisure time. One area I love to hear about is the reaction of some family members who have not had the opportunity to interact with our students since they had enrolled at TCS. Those of us who have raised children who learn differently know that family social settings can be very painful…for everyone. The aunts and uncles want to know “How is school?” They have become accustomed to the shy and uncomfortable social interactions that our children often present, especially when they are young. They are often confused at the communication between us and our children or curious about the findings and recommendations of the doctors and other professionals who partner with us along the way. It is not unusual for those family members to be impressed and ecstatic about the increased confidence and social agility of our students. Our late bloomers often stand out in the family settings until they find their voice and believe in their intrinsic value. We, who see them daily, become accustomed to the social and emotional growth occurring in our teens, but it is those intermittent family gatherings that spotlight the extraordinary gains our teens have made over the past few months. Our counseling department has been very active this year with babies! Lynn Haas delivered her son in early January and will be returning in mid-February. Consistency and responsiveness are two important aspects of our TCS program. We have hired an interim counselor, Michael Largin, to assist Abby Blackwell until Lynn’s return in February. Michael comes to us with experience in the classroom, as a counselor for children, teens and adults and fluent in Spanish! We are excited to have him join our team, even for a brief time. Homecoming is this weekend beginning on Friday afternoon! Our Middle School teams will wow us with their skills! Since so many of our students began in MS, there will be a good crowd watching this new team! I encourage staff, students and parents to come cheer these young athletes on! Saturday begins the High School portion which is always a treat. The Staff/Alumni game generates a lot of activity and competition! Whether your teen plays basketball or not, please join us as we support our teams and our school!

TAX TIME!
MANY THINGS TO THINK ABOUT INCLUDING….
Does your student have a diagnosed learning disability? Do you itemize your deductions?
Are you listing your tuition as a Medical Expense?
AND HAVE YOU COMPLETED YOUR GEORGIA GOAL FORM FOR 2014? If
every Cottage School parent participated in GOAL, we would have
sufficient scholarship money to meet the needs of all of our families.
Here’s some information that might interest you. There is a small
Private Special Needs School in Roswell with 35 students. Last year,
that small school raised over $300,000.00. No corporate donations
were involved. Just parents reaching out to associates, acquaintances,
and other families. If a school of 35 students can raise over
$300,000.00, surely a school of 134 can do better than $60,000.00.
Please don’t wait.
GET A TAX CREDIT OF UP TO $2,500.00. Go paperless and file at,
http://www.goalscholarship.org/for_donors/page/goal-paperless-process.
Why give money to the State of Georgia when you can re-direct those dollars to The Cottage School?
THERE IS NO REASON WE CAN’T ACHIEVE 100% PARTICIPATON.
