Weddings at Ullet Road Church
Welcome to Ullet Road Unitarian Church.
Why marry in a Unitarian Church? Recent years have seen an explosion in the popularity of weddings that don’t follow the old choice between registry office or parish church. It is now possible to be married at a number of sites, including stately homes and castles. But many people feel that a secular service in one of the new sites lacks a spiritual dimension, while the ancient rites of many mainstream churches are too restrictive and not reflective of the personally held beliefs of the participants. That’s why a Unitarian service is becoming such a popular way to celebrate this important act.
On first contact, many couples are relieved to find that there are no tests of faith to authenticate their ceremony. Often people who have been di-vorced, or couples coming from different religious traditions (Anglican and Jewish, for instance) are fearful that they will be turned away. The worship leader will only want to be sure that both parties have thought seriously about their marriage and wish to celebrate it in a spiritual context. Because we believe in the right of each person to determine their own religious be-liefs, there are no tests to pass, and no ‘right answers’ at all. The worship leader will assist in constructing a meaningful form for the ceremony, encouraging the participants to choose their own music, readings and vows. These may come from many religious traditions or from none. Readings from Walt Whitman or Kahlil Gibran might replace verses from the Bible or the Koran. There are two short phrases which the state re-quires to be used in each ceremony, but all other elements are open to dis-cussion. If the couple wish, suggestions and guidance from the worship leader are available.
At Ullet Road Unitarian Church we do all weddings. It was the first church in the country to hold the first Civil Partnership and we are to conduct weddings for everyone, for those of same sex couples and divorced. We are able to do bless-ings and a service of parting ways, a service of new beginnings.

Library and Cloisters and then use of the Grand Hall for Wedding Breakfast and evening celebrations. £2,320

When you have set a date with the Minister and your deposit it paid. The Ceremony is a collaborative and creative process with the Minister. Family and friends will comment how personal and unique your ceremony will be, it will reflect your personality and importantly your understanding of what your marriage ceremony means to you. You will also be assigned one of our Wedding Coordinators who will facili-tate how you foresee the reception and evening celebrations. They will be there to guide and explain what has worked well in the past. The Ceremony and celebrations is a creative process, we will support and help you along your way. The Church is a grade 1 listed building. The stain glass windows are mainly from William Morris and Co. The Chancel Window and Rose Window are original Byrne-Jones. The Church has been described as the most beautiful non-conformist church in the country. The history is tied up with the de-velopment of Liverpool. The Church was built in 1898. Its congregation goes back to 1687.
You can hire our tables, chairs, table cloths, wine glasses and other kitchen ware. However we do recommend whoever ca-terers your wedding that they do everything for you. Because we are located in a residential area, we ask all visitors and guest to consider those who live on York Avenue and Cheltenham Avenue. At the end of the evening please leave quietly. Music goes to background music at 11pm and ends at 11.30pm. All guests are asked politely to leave the church by Midnight. Capacity for Church: 440 Capacity for Hall, seated: 120. Evening 130.
The minister will provide to the couple various readings, vows, hymns that are used for a ceremony. But the minister will encourage you to put your stamp on the service, to explore what music has brought you together, was there any poetry or lyrics that reflect who you are as couple. Perhaps to write your own vows or bespoke the vows that are suggested. To explore various traditions that could potentially be part of your ceremony. If you don’t want to use hymns, you could use popular songs. Also, you could bring in choirs, live musicians that reflect you as a couple. Rev. Phil Waldron will support and guide you through the creation of you wedding ceremony. Making sure it is perfect to every detail.
