********** “Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraor-dinary.” A quote by Gerard Way describes how a true hero lives their life. A hero is one that doesn’t strive to be a hero- one that doesn’t demand to be recognized. A hero is one that goes above and beyond because of the person that they are, not because of the recognition that they want to receive. On the night of Thursday, April 28th, there were several heroes of Lawrence County that were rec-ognized for being themselves- one of the main qualities of a true hero. On that evening, the sixth annual “Heroes of Law-rence County Schools Banquet” was held at the First Baptist Church Christian Life Center. This evening, sponsored by the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club, is a showcase of Lawrence County heroes- both the teachers and former teachers themselves and even students at various grade levels. The evening began with a Welcome by School Superin-tendent Mr. Johnny McDaniel and the Invocation by Robin Thompson before those in at-tendance were served dinner. Starting the presentation of this year’s awards was Dr. Vicki Maddox. She introduced the 6th grade recipients before Robin Thompson called forward the 8th grade recipients. This year’s Student Heroes in grades 6 and 8 were: Tucker Laws from Ingram Sowell Elemen-tary School, Carley Fields from Lawrenceburg Public School, Robert Byrd from David Crock-
ett Elementary School, Claire Woods from David Crockett El-ementary School, Turner Perry from Summertown Elementary, Caiti Gallaher and Anna Grace Woodward from Summertown Elementary, Alene Kyla Gray from Leoma Elementary School, Dawson Adams from New Pros-pect School, Gunner Dickson, Wesley Dyar, and Alana Ogle from South Lawrence Elemen-tary School, Jordan Aaron from Ethridge Elementary School, Taylor Borden, Bailey Shaffer, and Samuel Gray from E. O. Coffman Middle School. After these students were called forward, it was time for this year’s 12th Grade Student Heroes to be introduced. These students were recognized by Jamie Glass. These students were: Logan Cowheard from Lawrence County High School, Jordan Haney from Lawrence County High School, McKin-ley Wheeley from Lawrence County High School, Emma Grace Sanders from Loretto High School, Lauren Elizabeth Coggin from Loretto High School, Maria Kersteins from Summertown High School, and Dylan Self from Summertown High School. After the Student Heroes of Lawrence County were rec-ognized, Dr. Vicki Maddox recognized that Lawrenceburg Public School received the honor of being named a Tennes-see Reward School. Tennessee Reward School’s showcase schools across the state that are the top 5% of the schools in the state in both annual growth and academic achievement. Jamie Glass then presented Leoma Elementary School with a Value Added Achievement Award. Robin Thompson recognized Mr. Andy Augustine. Mr. Au-gustine was chosen this year as a Tennessee Distinguished Science Teacher. Next up, it was time to show off this year’s Teachers of the Year. The following teachers were recognized from around the county: Jackie Lopp from Ingram Sowell Elementary School, Jyl Taylor from New Prospect School, Danny Nie-dergeses from Loretto High School, Dennis Green from David Crockett Elementary School, Roxanne Perry from Lawrenceburg Public School, Kelly Self from Leoma Elemen-tary School, Carol Marie Wiley from E.O.Coffman Middle School, Amanda Land from Lawrence County High School, Amy Burleson from Summer-town Elementary School, and Amy Dollar from Summertown High School. From all of the Teachers of the Year from each school, a school teacher was chosen to be the Teacher of the Year for the county in three separate divisions. In the Pre-K-4th grades division, Jan Davis of Ethridge Elementary School was chosen as winner. Repre-senting grades 5-8th was Sarah Burns from South Lawrence El-ementary School was picked. In the 9-12th grades system wide division, Paula Rigsby from Loretto High School received Teacher of the Year. Next came the Presentation of Heroes, or a chosen alumni from the high schools in the area, who have gone to serve as Heroes to our community. Introducing the alumni of the year from Lawrence County High School was the principal Michael Ad-kins. He presented Mr. Bobby Alford with his award. Next, Dr. Jennifer Littleton, principal of Loretto High School, came forward to present the Hero from Loretto High School. This year’s chosen alumni from LHS was Judge Norma McGee Ogle. Then, Brent Long presented the alumni from Summertown High
School with the Outstanding Hero award. The alumni from SHS that was picked for this year’s award was Tommy Lee Kidd. Following the alumni of the year awards was the Presenta-tion of Hero Educator by Mr. Johnny McDaniel. This award goes out to an outstanding edu-cator that devoted much of their time to serving the students of Lawrence County. This year’s winner of the Hero Educa-tor award went to Ms. Vivian Shields. Following these presenta-tions, the Closing Remarks were given by Mr. McDaniel. Although it takes place on one evening at the end of a school year, this event marks the continuous hard work shown by both students and teachers from across the county. It will be amazing to see what these students can accomplish in their very bright futures and what these teachers continue to accomplish in the classrooms throughout their tenure!

“In this life, we have to make many choices. Some are very important choices. Some are not. Many of our choices are between good and evil. The choices we make, however, determine to a large extent
our happiness or our unhappi-ness, because we have to live with the consequences of our
choices.” ~ James E. Faust
“Just as we develop our physi-cal muscles through overcom-ing opposition - such as lifting
weights - we develop our character muscles by overcom-ing challenges and adversity.”
