Dear FriendsFirstly, thank you to everyone who has sent cards, gifts and good wishes and given us practical support in trying to keep the garden in hand. A simple gesture, such as bringing the emptied bins back up the drive for us is a huge example of the love and prayers being showered our way and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As someone who has always been fit and active and a keen gardener, not being able to do is something that I find most frustrating. I am reminded often by people to make use of this time to rest, to relax and feel refreshed. I’m trying!I’m now on my second cycle of chemotherapy, and it has started to kick in with a bang and some days are better than others. No two days are alike, and I experience something different most days.Bev and I have been reflecting over the last few weeks about what chemotherapy drugs do. Obviously, they work by stopping cancer cells reproducing, they can also affect some healthy cells. Fortunately, healthy cells usually recover from damage caused by chemotherapy but cancer cells can’t and eventually die.In our Christian lives, sin is like cancer, it can end up, if we don’t keep tabs on it, of taking over and damaging the good in us. Only our relationship with God and our prayer life can help us defeat sin. We need to be washed daily by the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to pray every day for cleansing, and direction to know how we should be responding to what God asks of us. There’s a theme for a sermon one Sunday.Secondly, on the 4th July I will be celebrating 25 years of ordination to the Priesthood. We had planned a celebration in church, but with the way things have turned out the celebrating has been put on hold. Well, hopefully, I might be able to enjoy a glass of wine or orange juice with Bev.

Lytham Club DayMany thanks to all those who helped to decorate the float for Club Day. A special thank you to our set designer Carol Wildon, sign writers Liz Willis, Claire and Linda Rowlings, and to all those parents who turned up for the final painting session and putting together on Friday night.

My thanks to Izzy, Claire, Nicole and Cheryl who took care of the kids on the float. And a big thanks to all the kids who filled the float for us. The weather

held off and we had a fab time in the procession. Unfortunately, we came second, but I for one think ours was the best of the lot, but at the end of the day it was all about taking part and being involved in the whole Lytham community.

Many thanks, Ali.

As many of you will already know, Alison, having been the Children’s Worker here and at St John’s for 11 years, has decided that the time is right for her to stand down and explore pastures new. Ali has put a great deal of time and effort into her role and has done an excellent job for the benefit of the young people. In recognition of her hard work, we shall be providing her not only with our sincere thanks, but also with a gift. For those who wish to contribute towards this, there are small envelopes available on a plate at the back of church.Don’t be alarmed, we are keen to say that Ali is not leaving St Cuthberts, so we look forward to her continued presence in a different role.

In Memory of John RawnsleyCarine Rawnsley and son, Howard, presented a King James leather bound, large print bible to St Cuthbert’s Church in memory of John Rawnsley; a loving husband, father and former Sidesman at St Cuthbert’s.

On Thursday, 8th June 2017 Mothers' Union welcomed Mrs Eileen Kermode who gave us an interesting talk on the Ancient Chapel in Maghull. It is

one of the oldest places of worship in the area which is still in use and dates back to the 12th century. It is well worth a visit if you’re passing.Over the years it increased in size to accommodate the ever-growing population of Maghull. However, in 1888 a new parish church was built next door and it was decided to return the Chapel to its original size.

The building itself is very small but it houses a 15th century font with a Victorian lid, a 17th century chair and alms box (which is still used), a beautiful Easter window depicting Jesus Christ and the Resurrection, a very small teddy bear who guards the chapel and many, many more intriguing items. Today the Chapel is used once a month, between May and September, for Evening Prayer and open for Prayer Days and school visits. The final MU meeting for this season is Thursday 6th July 2017 at 2.30 p.m. when we are to visit Lytham Hall for Afternoon Tea. Our meetings recommence on Thursday 14th September 2017. At the initial meeting, we intend to hold a raffle to raise funds for MU to purchase a new caravan which will provide under privileged children with a holiday.

Lytham C of E Primary SchoolWe finally received our much anticipated SIAMs Inspection on 25th May. We were inspected by Mr Paul Adnitt, who spent from 8am through until 6pm in school. This inspection for Church schools looks at 4 areas; Christian Distinctiveness, Collective Worship, RE and Leadership & Management. I am delighted to be able to tell you that we were judged as being OUTSTANDING in all 4 areas!

The report can be found on our school website for you to read, but his key findings are: The excellent Christian leadership of the Headteacher,

supported by a strong senior leadership team and governing body, ensures that the school’s Christian character has a clear impact on pupils’ academic achievement and spiritual growth.

The outstanding and distinctive Christian ethos permeates all aspects of school life and has an important and affirmative impact on pupils’ personal and spiritual development. This is evidenced in excellent pupil behavior and relationships.

Strong links between school, home and the local churches, underpinned by gospel values, provide a positive Christian witness in the wider community.

Inspiring and inclusive daily worship is central to the life of the school. Its quality and vibrancy makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual development

We were VERY proud of the children who really were amazing. The Inspector commented on how wonderful each and every one of them were.I would like to thank our entire school family, which includes YOU for the support and commitment that is given to Lytham CE Primary School. Thy Kingdom ComeWithout doubt, Thy Kingdom Come initiative was a rewarding 10 days. Exhausting, but thoroughly enjoyable. We were blessed with good weather and many people, from the community and visitors from out of town, came through the doors between the 25th May (Ascension Day) and the 4th June (Pentecost Sunday).

St Cuthbert’s opened its doors to the public at 8am every morning, starting with a cooked breakfast and prayers, and remained open until 8pm most evenings. People made use of the prayer stations and took part in the various activities throughout the event. The pupils from Lytham CE Primary School created the artwork which can be seen on the pillars. They did an amazing job showing the Lord’s Prayer in paintings. On Tuesday 30th May an inclusive worship was held, with an awareness of those affected by disorder of mental processes and living with dementia. The service was led by Richard Golding the Older Persons Worker with Lytham and St Annes Methodist Church and attended by parishioners different Churches and people who had travelled from outside of the area.

Everybody was made very welcome and tea and cake was offered at the end of the service. People stayed for a while and chatted and met new friends. One gentleman commented, “the service was beautiful and encouraged me to reflect so much on times in my life, it brought back so many contented memories and a sense of peace”. The service brought people together and was very special. St Cuthberts with the Churches in Lytham Ecumential Partnership is planning to hold similar services in the future. These will be publicised locally.Wednesday 31st May was our busiest day, starting with breakfast and prayers as usual, we then had a morning of activities for families and children starting with an Icthus Trail, then Messy Church and a Teddy Bears Picnic.

In the afternoon, we had a Taize Service in Church followed by a prayer journey using a Labyrinth in the Church Hall.

One of the highlights of the intitiative was the official launch of the Community Fridge by the Mayor and Mayoress of Fylde, Cllr John Singleton JP and Mrs Geraldine Singleton on Thursday 1st June. They brought a starter food pack with them to help fill the fridge and have since dropped in to Church to put more items in.People are kindly donating unwanted, still in date food and people are taking food to use. Helping to reduce waste and also helping people who find

themselves in hard times.Another highlight was the Comedy and Curry Night in the Church Hall on the Friday. Over 50 people attended the event with Comedian, Allan Finnegan, a Baptist Minister from Bootle who entertained us with jokes and stories from his ministry. Also, Comedian Steve Cookson had us laughing out loud with his dry

sense of humour. It was a most enjoyable evening out.At the close of this exhausting, rewarding time of Thy Kingdom Come we celebrated with a Praise Party, an informal service using modern worship songs and data projection. We were challenged with the question ‘What now? We have prayed for the 10 days for Thy Kingdom to Come, that each of us prayed

for five people to come to know Jesus as their Saviour and Lord, but that can’t be the end. We were reminded of the quote from St Teresa of Avila 1515 –82

Christ has no body now on earth but yours,no hands but yours,no feet but yours,

Yours are the eyes through which to look out on Christ’s compassion to the world,

Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good,Yours are the hands with which he is to bless people now.

It’s down to us. Let’s keep praying for Thy Kingdom to Come and we are already looking forward to, and planning, Thy Kingdom Come for next year: Thursday 10th May - Sunday 20th May 2018!

Churchwardens' Report.Following Nick's diagnosis, Beryl has worked 'like a Trojan' to secure service cover for the coming few weeks. She was a 'dog with a bone' in chasing prospective candidates - very successfully! Revds Rick Bunday, Dick Cartmel, Anne Beverley and Canon Godfrey Hirst, have been very supportive ALONG with OUR OWN sterling workers - David, Helen, David and David. There have been some housekeeping and repair issues over the past few weeks but all are being attended to.The Quinquennial Report indicates much work and cost implications for the Tower. We have made a grant application to help towards it but we will not know until October whether we have been successful or not. There is no way of hiding the fact that as a church community we do not have enough in our general finances to sustain our continual outgoings. As a church will be looking at this later in the year when we start our Stewardship Campaign.

The sound system has been giving cause for concern for some months. Attempts to rectify the current situation have come to nought but we discovered that our current system uses frequency channels that have been out of date for many years although the mechanics are extremely good. A contractor has visited - he worked for the original company which installed the system and we await his advice. We are also seeking to give more support to those who use the loop system.Bishop Geoff retires mid-July and we are sending a donation towards his leaving gift. We wish him well and thank him for his work and support to us.I was very privileged to select a hymn for the Songs of Praise at Lytham Hall on Sunday after Chub Day. There was a terrific turn out to join the Community Choir in Song, with worship led by the ecumenical partnership ministry of Lytham. The crowning glory to St Cuthberts taking second place in the parade float contest. Thomas the Apostle by Joyce Hill

As you will see from Common Worship, The Feast of St Thomas the Apostle is celebrated on 3 July, although this is quite a modern development. Originally, 3 July was the date used by the Syriac Church only; for all the rest of Christendom his feast-day was 21 December. However, in 1969 the Pope moved the Roman Catholic celebration to 3 July, taking it out of the major pre-Christmas season of Advent and placing it in a quieter period of the liturgical year. In choosing 3 July, which Church of England now also accepts, the western church follows a detail in the Martyrology of St Jerome (died 420), which reflects the Syriac tradition in referring to St Thomas on this date. St Thomas is widely known as Doubting Thomas because of the scene in John 20: 24-28, in which, having been told that the Jesus had appeared in the upper room to the disciples at a time when Thomas was absent, he said he would not believe until he could see and touch the wounds. Eight days later, when Thomas was present, Jesus appeared again, in response to Jesus’ invitation to touch his wounds, Thomas answered ‘My Lord and my God’. Jesus commented that, while Thomas believed because he had seen, blessed indeed were those who believed but had not seen.It is in fact in John’s gospel that we get all the detailed information about Thomas. When Jesus announces his decision to return to Judaea to visit Lazarus, it is Thomas who cries out, ‘Let us also go that we may die with him’ (John11: 16), and it is in John’s gospel that Thomas is reported to have demanded, during the discourse before the Last Supper, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ (John 14: 5). It is also in John (11: 16 and 20: 24) that we learn that he was known as Thomas the Twin (Greek: Didymus). The other three gospels, by contrast, give us no vignettes of Thomas at all: he simply occurs in lists of the names of the

apostles (Matthew 10: 3, Mark 3: 18 and Luke 6: 15), and again in the list of the remaining eleven in Acts 1: 13.Perhaps because he already had a distinctive identity in the gospel narrative, many stories grew up about his subsequent life, the most influential of which are written down in the Acts of Thomas, most likely an originally Syriac text, which appears to date from before the middle of the third century (although surviving manuscripts in Syriac and Greek are not as early as this). This very lengthy text gives us an extravagant narrative of Thomas’s journeys and encounters with a variety of kings in largely unidentifiable lands. But the thrust of the narrative is that his successful missionary journeys were epic in scale, taking him to the outer limits of the known world, most notably to India. Later versions of the narrative, written for the Catholic and Ethiopic churches, tone down the story quite a bit but maintain the association with India, where he is the patron saint. To this day he is very much revered in the south, which holds to the belief that he brought Christianity and was martyred not far from Chennai (formerly known as Madras). Thomas remains a popular church dedication in South India, and Thomas is a favoured Christian name.
