Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle SchoolMission Statement

The Mission of Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School is to inspire our students to accept moral responsibility within a Catholic value system. It is the commitment of MHMS to educate the "whole" person: mind, body, and spirit. This is accomplished through an academically challenging curriculum where we teach our students to think critically, to develop a passion for learning, and to serve their community. The school fosters a caring environment where students are taught to love, respect, and learn from one another. Through this supportive community of faith, students will come to understand the importance of their role in the Church and the world.

Philosophy & Objectives

Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School is a Catholic school, which reinforces Catholic values throughout the curriculum. The importance of the Church and Gospel values is highlighted. We are charged to educate the “whole” person. We will foster the spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth of our students while recognizing the psychosocial needs of the middle school student. The middle school years are challenging years. At Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School one of our missions is to provide an atmosphere where respect is present, and all in the community continually learn and grow. Students experience great personal change during these three years. Our objective is to provide a structure whereby these changes can be guided and monitored in a healthy, safe way.Students are encouraged to think for themselves. Students will learn in an atmosphere where even mistakes serve as opportunities for growth. Because students’ personal morality is formulated during these years, our students will be encouraged to adopt a Christian value system. We resolve to fully know each student. Our student population is limited to enable us to maintain a caring, family atmosphere within a system that encourages students to take greater responsibility for their actions and for the protection of human rights within the school and in the greater community. The discipline system is designed to heighten the students’ awareness of their responsibilities and the consequences of negative behavior.Christian service is demanded of each student as he/she discovers his/her obligation to help others. Opportunities for service are provided which will broaden the students’ perspective and give them a link with those less fortunate.Teachers coordinate their curriculum closely with one another. As a team, subject teachers utilize material from a variety of perspectives. Recognition is given to the fact that intelligence is manifested in many different ways. While close attention is given to the “basics” in education, students are also taught to have an appreciation of the fine arts and an understanding of technology as a tool for further learning. The curriculum will move students beyond memorization to concept development. Students are given the tools they will need to be life-long learners.

GOVERNANCE

“The Catholic school is an expression of the educational mission of the parish with which it is associated and of the diocese. Therefore, the pastor is responsible to the Bishop for the administration of the total parish, including the parish school. The principal functions as the chief administrator of the school and is a member of the parish staff. Regular and open communication between the pastor and the principal is essential.Just as the parish council serves with the pastor on behalf of the total community, so the parish school board serves with the principal for the good of the school community. Today’s Catholic school principal, with the many demands which are made, needs assistance from a group of people who are committed to the Catholic school and are willing to work for the good of the school and parish.” (Archdiocese of Boston School Consultative Board Guidelines)

Non-Discriminatory PolicyMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to the students of the school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and religion.

PastorThe pastor is the canonical administrator and spiritual leader of the parish. He is the one who empowers the people to act in a consultative manner. The pastor is the agent of the civil corporation and the enactor of local policy. (Archdiocese of Boston School Consultative Board Guidelines)

Principal“The principal is the spiritual and instructional leader of the school and is responsible for the operation of the school program. The principal’s responsibilities are assumed in accord with Archdiocesan and local policies.” (Archdiocese of Boston School Consultative BoardGuidelines)

School Consultative BoardArchdiocesan Policy 5110 states: “Each school in the Archdiocese of Boston should establish a school consultative board to aid the pastor and the principal in developing and implementing local school policies.”Saint Joseph Elementary School and Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School assembled consultative boards to advise the pastor and principals on matters of school policy, finance, advancement, public relations, and marketing. Each of the boards works independently but collaborates when necessary.Members are sought who have expertise in the areas such as finance, curriculum, advancement, and parent volunteerism.

4

Page 5: €¦ · Web viewMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School is a Catholic school, which reinforces Catholic values throughout the curriculum. The importance of the Church and Gospel

The consultative board acts as a unit. Individual members are not authorized to speak on behalf of the board, school, pastor or principal.Members will serve three-year terms. Each board chooses its officers, a president who is responsible for setting the agenda, a vice president who presides in the absence of the president, and a secretary for recording minutes and for disseminating information when needed.Meetings take place at regular intervals throughout the school year.

PSA – Parent School AssociationThe Parent-School Association was formed in the spring of 2002 to better manage and oversee the rapidly expanding number of volunteer programs at St. Joseph’s Schools. The PSA covers volunteerism at both the Elementary and Middle School. Volunteers, committee chairs and officers are solicited in the spring prior to the upcoming school year. The Officers and Committee Chairs hold “monthly meetings”, generally in the morning in the lower school cafeteria, where information about upcoming programs and school activities is shared. Both Principals attend these meetings and provide additional information to the Officers and Committee Chairs. These meetings are open and parents and guardians of St. Joseph’s School students are welcome to attend.

VolunteersEach spring, parents are asked to contribute volunteer hours to help sustain the many programs as well as fundraisers sponsored by the school by filling in an on-line “volunteer sign-up sheet.” Volunteers for fundraisers are assigned close to the event. St. Joseph’s Schools do not have a mandatory volunteer hour program. However, it is an expectation that each family will recognize the importance that fundraising and volunteerism play in the overall well being of the school and will support these activities through volunteerism and contributions.

Office of AdvancementThe Office of Advancement exists to advance the mission of the school through fundraising and volunteerism. The Director of Advancement provides leadership, direction and management to secure financial resources and other support for the schools-working closely with the pastor, principals, parish business manager and the PSA volunteers.

Advancement CommitteeThis committee coordinates the fund raising activities of the schools and Parish. The committee is comprised of school, parish and community members whose goal is to enhance the schools fundraising potential.

Fund RaisingIn an effort to keep the rate of tuition as affordable as possible, the school offers the following opportunities for fundraising. All fund raising activities are evaluated and coordinated through the Advancement Counsel. New ideas are welcome. It is helpful if new ideas are presented in writing, with potential revenue and details addressed and delivered to the advancement office prior to an Advancement Counsel Meeting.

Attendance Policies and Procedures AttendanceDaily attendance at school is an important factor in a student’s academic success. Students must report to school and be present in their homeroom by 8:00 A.M. Excessive absences from the classroom will have a negative effect on the student’s learning. It is expected that from time to time a student may miss school due to illness or other emergency situations. When this occurs, please notify the school secretary between 7:30 A.M. and 8:30 A.M. The phone number for the Middle School office is 781-449-0133 Ex 211. Please state your name and the name of your daughter or son. State the homeroom, the reason for the absence, and the expected time of return to school. If a call is not made, the school will attempt to contact the parent or guardian. Should the absence extend beyond three days, a request should be made to collect assignments from the class teachers if the student is well enough to complete work at home. This work can be sent home with a friend or can be picked up in the office on the following afternoon.Upon return to school, a note signed by the parent or guardian must be presented to the homeroom teacher. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange make up work that must be completed in a timely fashion. Parents will be notified and a conference may be scheduled when it is determined that a student’s absence has become excessive.A student’s attendance is noted on the report card each trimester.

TardinessIt is expected that students arrive at school on time. Developing a habit of arriving on time will have benefits now and later on in life. Occasionally, there may be circumstances that result in a student arriving late to school. If the circumstance is known in advance, a parent should call the office and notify the secretary of the approximate time of arrival at school. Tardiness without proper excuse may result in detention. Students will be allowed three unexcused tardies per month. Students who exceed this number will be issued detentions. Tardy notes should accompany the student and must be presented to the office upon the student’s arrival at school. A tardy student, who arrives before 8:15 am, should report to homeroom. A tardy student who arrives later than this time must check in at the school office before being admitted to class. When a student is chronically tardy for school, parents will be notified.

DismissalsAppointments should be scheduled outside of school time if at all possible. Should it become necessary for a student to be dismissed from school, a note listing the time of the dismissal and the person who will be picking up the student must be presented to the homeroom teacher on the morning of the dismissal. A student will be released from school only into the custody of the parents/guardians or a person designated in advance by a parent/guardian. At the time of the dismissal, the student must report to the office where he/she will be signed out. Should a student return to school prior to the end of the school day he/she must check back in the school office.

Extended VacationsVacations during school time are strongly discouraged. While it is recognized that it is up to the parents to make this decision, it is often detrimental to the student to miss school for an extended period of time. Often the benefit of a trip is outweighed by the negative effect that missing school will have. It is the responsibility of the student to make up work missed as a result of the vacation. Teachers are under no obligation to provide advance homework.

DISCIPLINEThe school environment must be one that safeguards the rights of all individuals within the school. Discipline is learned from the interactions people have with one another. Discipline should be viewed not merely as a system of rules to be enforced but attitudes to be learned. It is important that students be taught reasons behind rules. While there are consequences for negative behavior in the process of addressing a violation of rules, emphasis is placed upon the changing of the student’s attitude as well as behavior.

Outside of School BehaviorThe administration at MHMS reserves the right to impose consequences for behavior occurring outside of school when said behavior detrimentally impacts the school.

Haddad Middle School. Should a student feel that he/she has been subjected to harassment, he/she must report it immediately to the principal. Sensitivity to the needs of the victim will be of paramount importance. If it is determined that a student has been guilty of harassment, parents will be notified immediately. Severe disciplinary action along with a remedial program will result.

In the event of a disciplinary incident the principal reserves the right to interview students without the permission or presence of a parent. During the investigative process of a serious incident, the principal will communicate with the parents. The administration reserves the right to search school property including desks and lockers at any time.

Conflict ResolutionIt is inevitable that conflicts between students and between students and teachers will occur during the school year. It is expected that persons involved in a conflict work toward a solution in a constructive manner. Violence takes many forms and is destructive and non-productive. Violence of any kind will not be tolerated. Assistance, if necessary, will be given to persons who are in conflict with one another to work toward a peaceful, productive solution.During the course of the year, groups of students are brought together to discuss conflict resolution. Students are given skills to deal with conflict in a non-violent way. The health and theology curricula also address this issue. The guidance counselor teams with the principal to coordinate this program.

RetentionTeachers or the principal can ask a student to stay after school on a given day in the event of disrespectful or disruptive behavior or for failure to turn in homework. It is the responsibility of the student to notify his/her parents should he/she have to stay after school. After school retention must be given first priority. Should it be necessary, the student will be given a day to arrange transportation. If there is an emergency, it is the responsibility of the student and the

parent to work out an alternative arrangement with the teacher.

DetentionThe detention system helps the school identify patterns of irresponsible behavior in students. With this knowledge, plans for remediation can be formulated and implemented. Students may be assigned detention for: repeated retention by the same teacher; failure to report to a retention; repeated instances of misbehavior; tardiness to school or class; violation of the uniform code; gum chewing; disruptive behavior during Church services. Detention slips must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the teacher who issued the detention. Detention is held each Wednesday afternoon. Failure to serve detention on the assigned date will result in double detention the following week. Students who have a note from a parent indicating that there is a medical appointment will have their detention rescheduled for the following week. This excuse must be presented prior to the day of detention. Participation in extra-curricular activities does not excuse a student from detention. The detention period runs from 2:40pm until 3:10pm for a single offense.Parents will be notified when a student has accumulated multiple detentions. Parents may be required to attend a conference if a student has multiple detentions. If a student continues to accumulate detention time, he/she will make himself/herself liable for suspension or other appropriate consequences.

Incident ReportsTeachers file incident reports when students have displayed chronic negative behavior or have disrupted a classroom in an extreme way. These reports are forwarded to the principal who will contact the student and the parent and determine the consequence. These reports are maintained in the student’s record file until the time of graduation or transfer.

SuspensionSuspension is a sanction that is put in place for serious disciplinary infractions when a student has seriously violated another person’s rights including acts of violence or harassment. A student can be suspended for substance abuse, including the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs. Any student who has displayed chronic negative behavior is also subject to suspension. At the time of the suspension, a meeting will be held with the parent and student. A report will be maintained in the student’s record file. During the time of suspension, students will not be afforded any credit for schoolwork missed. The student will be given assignments to enable him or her to stay current in the various subject areas. The student is also responsible for homework assigned during the time of suspension. Any student who is suspended for more than one offence during the year may not be invited to return to school for the following year or may not be permitted to attend graduation exercises. The principal will issue a suspension report, which includes an account of the incident and the sanctions imposed. The student will not be permitted to re-enter the school until appropriate remorse has been demonstrated and the parents and the student have signed the suspension report.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The goal of Monsignor Haddad Middle School is to present Catholic faith and Catholic teaching to our students in a rigorous academic, spiritual and moral education program. Our students strive for high academic achievement, are taught to love and worship God, and live the Gospel teachings. Our students work together, build community and give service to others.

Our school welcomes and does not discriminate against of exclude any categories of students. Admission is dependent both on academic qualifications and the desire to promote what is in the best interest for the student. Students are considered “academically qualified” if they meet a school’s written academic criteria for admission. Academically qualified Catholic students may be given priority for admission to Monsignor Haddad Middle School. Parents/guardians of students in MHMS must accept and understand that the teachings of the Catholic Church are an essential and required part of the curriculum.

AdmissionsStudents who have successfully completed the fifth grade with a positive recommendation from St. Joseph Elementary School are accepted into Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School. Registration for these students is held in January. Application for openings after the initial registration period will be accepted. Priority will be given to students who are contributing members of Saint Joseph Parish. Applicants must submit copies of report cards for the two previous years along with the results from the most recent standardized tests. Students may be asked for an interview. The criteria for selection are based on a student’s academic potential and achievement as well as on one’s character. Monsignor James J. Haddad Middle School does not discriminate on the basis of race or national origin.

AdvisementFaculty members serve as student advisers and meet with students periodically during the school year. One of the main benefits of an advisory program is the personalization of a student's experience in school. During the "roller coaster years" of middle school it becomes very important for young adolescents to develop positive relationships with adults outside of the family. During advisory sessions, advisees will have a caring adult to help explore social, emotional, and thinking skills. The advisor is a guide to help think things through, as well as a sounding board who can direct the advisee to resources within the school community.

BirthdaysThe school recognizes student birthdays by allowing the student to be "out-of-uniform” on the day of the birthday. The student must report to the school office for a uniform pass prior to the start of the school day. Should a birthday take place on a weekend, the student may be "out-of-uniform" on the Monday after the birthday.Students should refrain from bringing in birthday cakes and party food or other party items to school. Arrangements for private parties should take place outside of school time.

BooksA fee is charged at the beginning of the year for the use of books and materials. Once distributed, the books are the responsibility of the student. If a student loses a book, he/she must report the loss to the office. If the book cannot be located, the student will be charged the replacement cost of the book. All books must be covered by students to protect them from wear and tear. Books must be covered with brown paper or with fabric covers. During the year book covers must remain free from graffiti.Writing in non-workbook textbooks is a serious offense. Students will be required to replace the book in the event of this mistreatment.

Book BagsBook bags or backpacks are necessary to transport books to and from school. In school, backpacks must be stored in the student’s locker or in the location specified. Opportunities during the school day are scheduled for students to visit their lockers to drop off and retrieve books. Drawstring or LL Bean-type canvas bags no larger than 12”Hx13”Wx6”D may be used to carry books between classes.

Electronic Devices and Cell Phone UsageThe use of cell phones by students is prohibited during, before, and after school hours in the school building unless the student has permission of a teacher or a staff member. The student must stay with the teacher or staff member while they make the call or text.Students are required to keep their cell phones in their locker, shut off for the entire school day. Their phones should be placed in their backpack, when preparing to leave school. Students should not be carrying their phones while they are still in the school building. If a student is observed using a cell phone in the building without permission, the cell phone will be confiscated and the parent will have to pick it up in the principal’s office. Cellphones are prohibited from use during school trips. Students may use a digital cameras or “throw away cameras” for picture taking on school trips. Cellphone cameras and electronic tablets are not allowed! Students may carry their phones in their backpack during afterschool hours, but they still require permission to use it to make a call or text.Exploratory week trip media usage will be addressed prior to the trips.A general rule: No electronic devices are permitted in school. This includes electronic gaming devices, tablets and readers. If a student has an electronic device, it will be taken to the main office where a parent or guardian will be contacted.

Co-Curricular ProgramMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School offers a co-curricular program to enable students the opportunity for healthy socialization. It is recommended that each student participate in at least one club or activity during the school year.In order for a student to participate in any after-school program, including clubs, dances, and skiing, he or she must have been present in school for at least one-half day on the day of the activity. The following clubs and activities are offered at various times after school:

Homework Strategy Program Computer Club Science Club Intramural SportsBand Field Hockey Ski Club Slide PresentationsBasketball Student Council Yearbook Field HockeyNewspaper Drama Golf

A student may be excluded from participation in the co-curricular program of the school if financial obligations to the school have not been fulfilled.

Christian Service

In keeping with the school’s mission statement, students are encouraged to volunteer their time in service to others. While each student should strive to perform service as frequently as their commitments permit, a minimum number of service hours has been established for each grade per academic year. Sixth graders must perform at least 8 hours. Seventh graders must perform at least 12 hours. Eighth graders must perform at least 15 hours. Some opportunities for service, through the school and parish, will be announced during the academic year. Because these opportunities are limited, students should seek service opportunities outside of the school community.

Service is the selfless giving of oneself to benefit others with no expectation of recognition, reward, or acknowledgment. With this in mind, there are many types of volunteering that will qualify as service hours. Some good examples of service include volunteering at homeless shelters or food pantries, assisting elderly neighbors with various tasks, visiting the elderly, volunteering at Charles River Arc, and helping with Church activities. Service does not include acts in return for compensation or acts that students are otherwise obligated to perform, such as chores at home, responsibilities to family members, or altar serving only once on the

weekend. If, however, a student receives compensation for their service and then donates that money to charity, the hours worked would count toward service. Any questions regarding what work qualifies as service should be referred to the religious education teachers who oversee the performance of service hours.

Students are expected to keep track of the number of service hours they have performed as well as the kind of service they have performed during each academic year. Parents are urged to assist their children in monitoring service hours and finding service opportunities. When possible, parents should join with their sons and daughters in their volunteer efforts. At the end of May, students will report their service hours to their religion teacher. Parents will attest to the veracity of this report by signing it.

GuidanceThe middle school years between sixth and eighth grade are very important to a child’s personal development. Consequently, a main focus of the guidance department is to support the social, emotional and academic growth of students. This is achieved through individual counseling and small group sessions.Personal counseling centers on specific issues of concern to the student. Parents, teachers, or students themselves may initiate referrals. The counselor will consult with parents if there is to be regular contact. Counseling issues include:

> Peer Acceptance/Conflict > Self Image/Self esteem> Academic Achievement/Goal setting > Learning issues/Study skills> Family issues (e.g. separation, divorce, new sibling, remarriage, adoption, moving, job loss, illness)> Bereavement/Loss > Anxiety/Phobias > Acting out behavior> Self destructive behavior > Substance abuse

Group counseling brings small groups of students together to strengthen social connections or to assist students in dealing with problems.

> Lunch groups – informal social interactions to expand and strengthen peer relations> Conflict resolution – helping students solve problems through small group interaction> Problem solving – helping students work collaboratively to come up with solutions to a shared problem

Part of the counselor’s role involves educating groups of students about developmental issues and life skills. This is usually done in the classroom setting or in conjunction with the health curriculum. Topics include:

> Transitions encountered in adjusting to middle school, moving to high school> Physical, emotional and intellectual changes of early adolescence > Coping strategies/Stress management > Problem solving techniques

The school nurse will make a determination whether or not a child should be sent home or remain in school. No medications (including over the counter medications) are allowed in school without written order from a doctor. Should a student need to take medication, proper documentation must be forwarded with the medication to the school nurse who will administer the medication at the prescribed time.During the year, the school nurse arranges mandated screening for vision and hearing. Postural screening is also scheduled. A female student may be asked to bring in a swimsuit or halter-top on the day of the screening. This type of clothing facilitates better examination of the back. Referral notices will be sent if a follow-up medical examination is deemed necessary.Immunizations, as required by the Board of Health must be up-to-date. The school nurse will advise parents when immunizations are necessary. Students who are not properly immunized will be excluded from school per order of the Board of Health.

High School Application ProcessFrom September to December of the eighth grade year, students will be selecting and applying to the high schools of their choice. The guidance office coordinates the application process and serves as a resource to parents and students. To assist students and parents in the selection process, the middle school hosts a high school information night in September. used for the Internet. Students come to the center for instruction two times each week to learn the use of computer tools and applications. Classes visit the center for special projects coordinated between the technology director and the subject teachers. The center is also open for a time after each school day for student use. Appointments must be made in advance for after school use.All classrooms have access to the Internet. Teachers have access, for classroom use, to an iPad cart with 30 iPads and laptop carts which enhance integration of technology into the curriculum in a productive and meaningful way. In addition, the school library is equipped with computers for student use before, during and after school. The School librarian will assist students with their research through the use of technology.

Use of the InternetIt is the philosophy of St. Joseph Parish Schools that the Internet be used as an educational tool in the learning process. Middle school students will have access to the Internet in the computer lab, the library and in individual classrooms. We consider this an exciting educational opportunity but also a privilege that must be handled responsibly. To protect and support the moral, Christian environment of the school community, St. Joseph Parish Schools have purchased and installed at all of our computers a program that blocks undesirable sites from the Internet. In addition, our faculty is committed to closely supervising its use. Although supervised use is expected, no single group can monitor all the activity on the Internet. Each user must act responsibly and morally. Students will also be expected to respect this philosophy by adhering to the following guidelines:Students must:Use the Internet for educational purposes onlyBe able to state/write his/her purpose for using the Internet to the supervisory adultComply with federal; state and local copyright laws while accessing information from the Internet.

Usage PolicyStudents will be required to read and sign the school’s computer usage policy that is an addendum to this Handbook.Monsignor James J. Students found to be in violation of this policy lose computer privileges.

TelephoneThe office phone is strictly for office use. In an emergency, the school secretary may place a call for a student from the office.

Likewise, students who are picked up after school must be picked up in the rear lot. Each afternoon, a car line forms. Middle school parents are asked to use the two lines closest to the rectory. When all students have entered their cars, the cars are released. Should a student fail to arrive at the car on time, the parent must drive around the block and reenter the parking lot.Walkers must use the crosswalks when crossing the street. There is no crosswalk at the intersection of May and Oakland streets.

ACADEMICS

Academic ProgramMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School offers a comprehensive three- year academic program, which will prepare a student for high school. The curriculum has been designed to follow the Massachusetts State Curriculum Standards and the Common Core.

Course of Study:Language Arts Social Studies Mathematics Science Religion Spanish Physical/Health Education Visual Arts Computer Music Study Skills

Teachers team on levels to coordinate their curriculum. Each level is broken down into groups. These groups travel together throughout the day. This enables teachers to better coordinate activities within and between the various subject areas. In grades seven and eight students do not always travel with their homeroom. An interdisciplinary approach to learning is advanced. Reading, writing and oral presentation are emphasized by all subject teachers. Our courses in technology strive to serve the technological needs of our students in the academic arena and prepare them for the technology they may need or encounter in their daily lives and in the years ahead. While we utilize

"computer lab" time for training and instruction, our ultimate goal is to integrate the computer as a tool in all subject areas. Thus as we train students in the effective use of computer tools and applications, we try and do this in such a way that it coincides with their curricular and developmental needs. It is the goal of our program to provide students with a responsible and informed attitude regarding use of the Internet and World Wide Web as a learning and communication tool.Similarly, our art program not only studies the principles of artistic expression but also applies a visual reinforcement for material being addressed in the various other subject areas. The art teacher works closely with the core subject teachers.Themes and projects are approached from many different perspectives by many different teachers.Whenever possible, subject material is reinforced through field trips. These trips will stamp an impression in the students’ minds and help bring to life what is discussed in the classroom. In the Spring, all students participate in an exploratory week. Grade eight students visit Washington, D.C. Grade seven students travel to Philadelphia and Gettysburg. Grade six students explore Boston.

EvaluationTeachers utilize multiple methods for evaluating student learning. Students demonstrate what they have learned through oral presentation, classroom participation, projects, research and reflection papers, homework assignments, laboratory experiments and testing. A test calendar is available on the school web site. Students are given a minimum of two day’s notice prior to major tests. Under normal circumstances, no more than two tests are scheduled for a given day.

Report cards are issued three times per year. Dates for distribution of these reports are included in the school calendar. Should you not receive a report card by the specified date, please call the school office.MHMS does not issue mid-trimester progress reports. Parents have access to teacher gradebooks throughout the school year via an online portal called “Family Link”. Parents will receive a letter at the beginning of the school year which will contain personal ID and password information and instructions on how to get to the link. Students take cumulative examinations near the end of each school year. Standards reports based on these examinations are mailed home with the final report card.Communication with teachers is encouraged. Should there be a need for additional monitoring of a student’s progress, arrangements will be made through the guidance department. Parents may not set up individual plans and forms for the monitoring of a student’s progress.

HomeworkHomework plays an essential role in the education of the student. Homework reinforces material that was learned in the classroom. In addition, homework helps students learn responsibility and self-discipline to enable them to become independent learners. In general, a student can expect to have between one and a half hours to two hours of homework each night. The amount of time a student should spend on homework will vary from student to student. Some students can complete

26

Page 27: €¦ · Web viewMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School is a Catholic school, which reinforces Catholic values throughout the curriculum. The importance of the Church and Gospel

assignments quickly while others may need more time. Homework is the responsibility of the student. Parents must refrain from bringing forgotten assignments to school.Students are required to use an assignment notebook that is issued by the school to record their assignments. It is advisable that parents peruse the notebook from time to time.Students will be assigned daily homework and long-term assignments. Teachers coordinate the schedule for long-term assignments so as not to over burden students. Students should learn to budget their time when completing long-term assignments. All assignments must be turned in directly to the teacher. Students are advised not to leave homework on a teacher’s desk. If the teacher is not available, the student must turn the assignment into the school office. Credit will not be given when daily homework is not turned in on time. However, teachers may require a student to complete missed homework after school.Long-term assignments constitute major portions of a student’s grade. Failure to turn in a long-term project will have serious consequences. Students who do not have their assignment on the day that it is due will be given one additional day to complete and turn in the assignment. However, there will be a full grade deduction for any late assignment. No credit will be given for assignments not turned in after the one day late period.Teachers will make attempt to contact parents should a student habitually not turn in homework or a major assignment. A student may be required to stay after school to complete missing homework.

Academic Intervention PolicyThe academic intervention policy is designed to address the educational needs of students who are exhibiting signs of difficulty within their major subjects. A student is considered to be in “academic difficulty” if any of the following conditions apply:

The student has 2 or more grades below a C- in a major academic subject. The student has an excessive amount of incomplete homework and/orother assignments that needed to be submitted to the teacher.

Once the student is considered to be in “academic difficulty”, they will be required to participate in the following:Attend Homework Strategies Program ( HSP) one or more times per week.See a teacher afterschool for specific subject matter help. The student will be required to sign in and out with that teacher. The student may be required to report to HSP after working with the teacher if the program has not concluded.*HSP concludes at 3:40 PM.Have one working lunch per week under the direction of the guidance counselor. The student will work on any incomplete assignments while eating their lunch. They will be able to work in area other than the Dining Hall.*A student’s academic improvement plan takes priority over all co-curricular activities. The parents or guardians will be given a letter stating that the student is considered to be in “academic difficulty”. They will be asked to sign to acknowledge the academic improvement plan formulated by the teachers and administration of MHMS.

assignments via their teacher’s web-site. Should a student miss a test or quiz, because of absence, he or she must see the teacher on the day of return to schedule a time for makeup work.Students who have been absent for more than two days can meet with teachers during reading period to ask for assignments or schedule make-up work or extra help. Should a teacher be unavailable during silent reading period, the student should speak with the teacher after their next scheduled class. Generally, teachers are available after school for one-half hour after dismissal Monday through Thursdays. However, it is the responsibility of the student to schedule an appointment. Deadlines will be extended for students who have been absent for three or more consecutive days as a result of illness.Should the absence extend beyond three days, a request should be made to collect assignments from the class teachers if the student is well enough to complete work at home. This work can be sent home with a friend or can be picked up in the office on the following afternoon.

Standardized TestingIn March, standardized testing is administered to all middle school students. These tests assess aptitude and achievement and serve two purposes. The first purpose is to track the level of individual student achievement in all subject areas. This information helps teachers and parents adjust the academic program for each student. Secondly, teachers study the group results in order to modify the academic program to better meet student needs.Test results are given to parents in June along with information to help interpret the results. Parents who are concerned with their child’s progress can consult with the guidance counselor.

Cumulative ExaminationsIn May and June of each year, teachers administer cumulative examinations. Each subject teacher prepares an examination that is reflective of the material and concepts taught during the last trimester.

Students with Special NeedsMonsignor James J. Haddad Middle School provides services for students with moderate special needs. Students who are marginally learning disabled can seek assistance through our resource room after a core evaluation has taken place and the report indicates the need for individualized assistance. Small modifications within the classroom can be implemented. The academic program can be rigorous, and sometimes, the self-esteem of a student is put in jeopardy if failure is imminent. Parents of students should communicate with the resource teacher for the best course of action for each student. The resource room teacher works individually with the students as required by the educational plan. In addition, the resource teacher works with the faculty for adjustments needed in the various classrooms. Transfer students with special needs must make the educational plan available prior to acceptance to guarantee services.Extra help is provided for students on request but must be arranged with the individual subject teachers. Tutoring may be recommended for students who need continual help. Certain teachers are available for this fee-based service.
