Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to our OPEN HOUSE!!! As you all should know by now, I am Mrs. Robin Cebenka - your child's first grade teacher. I have had a wonderful couple of weeks spending time working with your children and getting to know each and every one of them! They are such a joy! I thank you for the opportunity to spend a WHOLE school year with them. This packet, like the one sent home on the first day of school, is for you to keep and refer to if you have any questions as we continue our first grade journey. There are copies of some very helpful references, contact information, and daily/weekly procedures. I am looking forward to a very successful year for all!!
Sincerely,Mrs. Robin Cebenka

Website: cebenka.weebly.com HOMEWORK
As you probably already know, I will not be sending home daily or weekly homework. I will be sending home a FLUENCY practice sheet each week
however. Students are to read it each night and write down the time it took them to read the entire text. Please turn these in on Fridays so I can just
look them over. Students should be reading or listening to you read to them each night so that they become more fluent readers – and simply love
reading for the sake of reading. There will however be times that I send something home that needs to be completed – when this happens it will be in their green folder which is in their binder. For those of you that would like
something more for your child to do each night, I sent home a yellow printing book. Please use this as you like. You can also have them log onto
DREAMBOX or Room 206’s Weebly.-----------------------------------------------------
BEHAVIOR LOG
This is located in the front of the daily binder. I will note behavior, comments and reminders in this book each day barring any unforeseen circumstances. Please check this each night, sign and note any questions or concerns.----------------------------------------------------------
STUDENT WORKYour child’s work will be sent home in their binders as it is completed and
assessed. If it comes home in their binder, it is yours to keep There may be times that I send home assessments that I need back to put in their portfolios. These will come home in a different format so that you know
they need to be returned.

COMPREHENSION HINTS
One of the most important things children learn in reading is how to comprehend written material. Parents can play a vital role in helping their children understand more of what they do read, not by becoming “teachers” for their children, but rather by encouraging their children to read and think beyond the actual words in a reading selection. The following ideas provide you with some suggestions.
* Cut out some photos from the newspaper or an old magazine. Ask your child to think
of new titles for each picture and write each one on a slip of paper. Encourage your child
to combine these into a notebook or scrapbook.
* As you and your child listen to a popular song, write down some of the lyrics. Afterwards,
ask your child to rearrange the lyrics in the correct order. You may want to use songs
such as “Jingle Bells” or “Mary Had A Little Lamb” for starters.
* During a commercial break in a television program you are both watching, ask yourchild questions such as “Why is the character doing that?” or “What do you think
will happen next?” These kind of reasoning/anticipation questions are important incomprehension development.
* As you read a story to your child, stop every so often and ask your child to think of
a word that may come next in the story. Encourage your child to be creative and think of
as manywords as possible for each “blank”.
* Before you read a familiar story again to your child, ask him or her to give you a capsule
summary of the characters, events, or situations that occurred. Encourage your child to
keep his or her summary short and to the point. Compare this summary withthe actual events.
