MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Mining the Minors: It’s Time to Get Excited About Nick Gordon Jake Depue | ESPN 1500 | May 7, 2017 As the calendar turns to May and sample sizes slowly start to become more meaningful, we can have a little more confidence in drawing some initial conclusions about player performance. In the Majors, we’ve seen Derek Falvey and Thad Levine begin to act after a month of observation, DFA’ing Danny Santana and Michael Tonkin and demoting Kyle Gibson to Triple-A Rochester. Falvey and Levine, of course, certainly gave weight to each player’s overall body of work, not just their performance this year. Clearly, though, they saw a month’s worth of data as a large enough sample size to justify demoting someone like Gibson, a relatively established major league player. So, if you buy into the idea that we’re approaching statistical significance in the evaluation process, then allow yourself to get excited about Nick Gordon, because he’s tearing up the Southern League. Through play Friday, Gordon is hitting .340/.402/.490, with a .892 OPS. Those numbers would be impressive in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, where offensive numbers are often inflated (old friend Oswaldo Arcia is currently hitting .385/.438/.758 for the Reno Aces). In the Southern League, Gordon’s batting line is among the very best. Among hitters with at least 50 plate appearances, Gordon ranks 3rd in average, 10th in OBP, and 7th in OPS. That alone would be cause for excitement, but it doesn’t tell the full story. Although Double-A is a younger league than Triple-A, it still has its fair share of non-prospects—career minor leaguers in their late 20s who will likely never see the big leagues. If you filter out players 25 and older, Gordon ranks 2nd in the league in average, 6th in OBP, and 4th in OPS. And he’s doing all of that as the youngest hitter in the league–he won’t turn 22 until late October. Again, it’s only one month. But Gordon’s hit well at every level of the minor leagues and the Arizona Fall League, while being among the youngest players at each level. His track record, in other words, suggests this isn’t likely a flash in the pan. He hadn’t hit for much power in his career coming into the year, but that’s changing this year as well, as he continues to grow into his body. Gordon’s always been a projectable player—there’s a reason the Twins took him 5th overall. And while he’s impressed with the bat throughout his career, we may be seeing him take it to another level this season. Again, it’s early, but maybe it’s no longer too early. Get excited. Engelb Vielma Vielma gets a fraction of the hype of his double play partner at Chattanooga, but he’s putting up comparable offensive numbers. The 23-year-old is hitting .326/.378/.382 through the first 25 games of the season. Those numbers are much more surprising than Gordon’s because they differ substantially from what he’s done thus far in his career (which of course also suggests more reason for caution in drawing meaning from those numbers). Vielma’s a career .267/.330/.313 hitter. It could be a fluke, but it’s also possible the slim-framed Vielma is coming into his own a bit, and perhaps has added some muscle. In 397 plate appearances last year, Vielma had just 11 extra base hits. He already has 5 in 100 plate appearances this year. I think the Twins need to see Vielma have sustained offensive success before they buy into the notion that he could hit enough to stick in the big leagues, but so far his start has surely exceeded their expectations. As I’ve written about at length in this column, the reason Vielma is intriguing is because of his glove. By most accounts, his glove is big-league ready at shortstop, which makes his hot offensive start all the more intriguing. I’ve also written at length, perhaps obsessively so, about where Gordon and Vielma are playing defensively, and what that could mean about how the Twins view them. A pattern appears to finally be emerging, I think. The Twins seem to be clustering Vielma and Gordon’s games at shortstop and second, respectively. Vielma opened the season playing 4 straight games at second, followed by 5 straight at short, 3 straight at second and on and on. Gordon’s pattern, by extension, is similarly clustered, but at the opposite position of Vielma. They could each play their natural position of shortstop, of course, if one of them gets promoted. I’d expect the older Vielma to get the call first, and I wouldn’t be shocked if that happened relatively soon. Nick Burdi Burdi’s an intriguing prospect because of his upside—he throws a triple digit fastball and nasty slider. When he was drafted out of Louisville, many saw him as a future late-inning MLB reliever, and so far this season, he’s pitching like one. He’s given up 1 run while striking out 13 in 9.1 innings, and has touched 100 MPH in recent outings. I talked to Burdi about his comeback from injury earlier this week, if you’re interested in reading more about him.

Daniel Palka After a blistering start, Palka’s slumped the past two weeks. He’s currently hitting .242/.296/.440. He’s had enough success at every level of the minor leagues to suggest that his numbers will come up again, and when I chatted with him earlier this year he talked about how he was less anxious at the plate this year and wasn’t bothered by bad offensive nights. No one enjoys slumping, of course, but Palka seems to know who he is as a hitter and has confidence that his approach will continue to produce big numbers. I’d be surprised if his bat doesn’t heat up again as the weather in upstate New York starts to improve after two weeks of rain delays and games played in mostly cold, raw weather. Stephen Gonsalves Nothing new to report with Gonsalves, who remains on the DL at Chattanooga. He indicated on social media a couple weeks ago that he was targeting a mid-May return. Fernando Romero After two bad starts to open the season, Romero has been brilliant. Over his last three starts, Romero’s given up 2 earned runs over 18.1 innings, with 16 Ks and 3 walks. Romero has electric stuff, and after a dominating stint at High-A Fort Myers last year, he’s off to a good start in Double-A in his age 22 season. Among the Twins’ starting pitching prospects, Romero probably has the best chance of one day being a number 1 or 2 starter in the majors. I don’t think there’s much of a chance we’ll see him in Minnesota this year, but if he continues to put up dominating numbers he could enter spring training next year with a legitimate chance to win a spot in the Twins’ starting rotation. Jose Berrios sharp again as Rochester Red Wings top PawSox Sal Maiorana | Democrat & Chronicle | May 7, 2017 Mike Quade figures he’s not going to have Jose Berrios down in Rochester very much longer, so he may as well enjoy the talented right-hander while he can, and he certainly did Sunday afternoon at frigid Frontier Field. “He continues to pitch well here,” Quade said of Berrios, who went 6 2/3 innings allowing just one run on six hits as the Red Wings nipped Pawtucket 3-1 on a raw, 41-degree day. Because of the nature of the early-season major-league schedule where there are typically a few more off days in April, either built in or due to weather problems, the parent Minnesota Twins haven’t really needed a fifth starter. However, the time is coming later this week, and Berrios will most likely get the call. In six starts for the Red Wings, the soon-to-be 23-year-old is now 3-0 with a microscopic 1.13 earned-run average and an equally miniscule 0.81 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). He has given up one or zero runs in five of his six outings, and he has 39 strikeouts compared to just eight walks. He has been so dominant that Quade is actually a bit spoiled and he found a little room to nitpick Sunday. “I didn’t think his command was all that great,” Quade said. “His stuff is plenty good enough to pitch as well as he did today, but he was behind more than I’ve seen him, and his fastball command wasn’t as good. I mean you start to wonder if you’re picking too much; we’ll take that outing all day long. But I’ve got my mind set on him pitching somewhere else, so maybe I’m a little more critical.” Nick Tepesch started for the Twins Saturday and was roughed up by the Boston Red Sox, though only one of the seven runs he allowed inside two innings was earned. Still, he was tagged for five hits and two walks, and it seems like Tepesch and Berrios could change places pretty soon with Tepesch coming back to the Wings. “They need some people, but I don’t know what they’re thinking in Minnesota with Tep’s start yesterday and (Drew Rucinski) there,” said Quade. “I know they’re going to need some pitching coming up, but all I ask is what am I doing with Jose, is he pitching today, and do I have any limitations on him, and the answer (Sunday) was no.” While Berrios was locking up the PawSox, center fielder Zach Granite made an impressive triple-A debut. A left oblique strain delayed the start of Granite’s season, but after a rehab assignment in Fort Myers, Florida, he was pronounced ready to go. Quade plugged him right into the leadoff spot, and Granite singled to left on the fourth pitch he saw from Pawtucket righty Shawn Haviland.

J.B. Shuck chased Granite to third with a single, and then both men scored on a line-drive double to left by Tommy Field that gave Rochester a 2-1 lead after Berrios had given up back-to-back two-out doubles to Steve Selsky and Sam Travis in the top of the first for the only run the Red Sox would score. “You know he’s dying to play, and his first base hit was a ball about hat top high and he tomahawked it to left,” Quade said with a smile. “He just makes things go; he got off to a good start.” In the third, Granite singled sharply up the middle, stole second, and came around to score the final run of the game on a single by Field. “That’s my game,” said Granite. “I’m not here to hit home runs, that’s not what I do. I’m here to score runs, that’s the name of the game. If I can do that, I’m doing my job and the guys behind me are happy.” The second-place Wings (14-11) are out of town for the next week before returning home Monday, May 15, for a four-game series with Lehigh Valley. The hearty fans who attended Sunday’s cgame — about 500 or so — can redeem their ticket stub for a free ticket to any future Wings game this season, a reward from the club for coming out on such a cold afternoon. “It’s not as cold when you win,” said general manager Dan Mason, who made that announcement to cheers about midway through the game. Lookouts extend winning streak to seven games David Paschall | Times Free Press | May 8, 2017 The Chattanooga Lookouts seem to be winning every time they take the field these days. A more relevant topic is which Lookouts player will inflict the most damage. After Nick Gordon and Engelb Vielma each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Friday's 8-1 pummelling of Pensacola and Edgar Corcino went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Saturday's 5-1 dumping of the Blue Wahoos, designated hitter Travis Harrison was happy to make his mark Sunday. Harrison's two-out single down the right-field line in the sixth inning scored Jonathan Rodriguez and LaMonte Wade to erase a 2-1 deficit and propel the Lookouts to a 4-2 triumph in the first seven-inning game of a doubleheader at AT&T Field. The win was the sixth straight for Chattanooga, and the Lookouts made it seven in a row with a 3-2 victory in eight innings in the second game. Wade was the hero of that contest, singling to center with none out in the eighth to score Corcino. "We're playing better baseball," Harrison said. "The lineup is getting stabilized, and people are starting to learn about each other. We've got a lot of guys playing well and a lot of guys contributing. It's been a team effort." Chattanooga's productive week turned a 10-13 record into 17-13 heading into tonight's series opener at Montgomery. The Lookouts also have gone 8-2 during their past 10 games against Jackson and Pensacola, who entered Sunday as the Southern League's two division leaders. "It was just time," Gordon said. "We've got team chemistry now, and we had to get a feel for things. Things go your way and don't go your way in baseball, and you've got to make adjustments. I think we're doing that right now." Gordon, the top prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization, is hitting a robust .336 in his first season in Class AA. Vielma is hitting. 319, while Wade is at .304. Harrison is in his third season with the Lookouts, having watched the 2015 team mold itself into a league champion and last year's bunch go 75-65. "Every team is just a little bit different," Harrison said. "We have some new guys who are playing well, and to see them get comfortable in their spot is really fun. Nick Gordon has been playing great, and LaMonte Wade as of late has been playing great. "It's been fun." The Lookouts also seem to be mastering the art of ending on a high, having won five of six series finales so far this season. Their 17-13 record is good for only third in the North Division, but it's also the third-best record in the league.

Nobody is debating who the league's hottest team is right now. "There is nothing that we do overly great, but our pitching is pretty good and our bullpen is really good," Harrison said. "We do everything pretty solid, and I think that's going to be the way we'll have to beat these teams. We'll have to do things just a little bit better than they do." Said Gordon: "Teams are still figuring out their personalities, but as long as we go out and do what I know we can do, we'll definitely be hard to beat."
