As students arrive, welcome them at the door. Take attendance and collect any permission slips that they have brought back. Distribute a snack to each student who wants one. After they have finished eating snacks, gather them together for games.

GAME TIME (20 – 30 minutes)

Choose your game(s) from the www.crossroadsgames.com site or the printable games handbook available on that site.

LARGE GROUP, PART 1 (10 – 20 minutes)

Gather all the children in one place. Remind them that in the past few weeks we have been talking about how each of us has broken God’s law and deserves his anger and punishment. Jesus is the only one who has ever kept God’s law perfectly. We have seen that God has made a way for us to be forgiven and to experience new life. That way is through repentance and faith in his Son, Jesus. Ask:

What is faith? (Wait for students to respond.) Ask:

What is repentance? (Wait for the students to respond.) Say:

Today we will be investigating very specifically how we can have faith and repentance and live the life God wants us to. In other words, how do we experience God’s salvation? Say:

Before we get on this case, we’re going to do a little activity.

Distribute a piece of clay to each student. Tell them that they will have five minutes to think of something that they want to shape using that piece of clay. Give each student a plastic knife and a toothpick to use to help them shape the clay. After the five minutes, ask the students these questions:

o Did each of you have an idea about what you wanted to make?

o Did any of you use only your hands to shape your clay?

o How many of you used the tools I gave you?

o How many of you used another tool besides the ones I gave you?

Say: Today’s mystery about how we experience God’s salvation really centers on this: What tools does God use to shape our lives? Once we have been forgiven by faith in Jesus, God wants to shape our lives so that we look more like Jesus—that means that we begin to keep God’s laws better and better. God uses some specific tools to shape us—to help us experience his salvation. Today, our job is to uncover what these tools are. Well, I think it’s time we look at our clues.

Take out the mirror. Say:

A mirror. What do you think this might have to do with our mystery of how we experience God’s salvation? (Accept all reasonable answers.)

Take out the megaphone. Say:

A megaphone. What do you think this has to do with today’s mystery of how we experience God’s salvation? (Accept all reasonable answers.).

Take out the telephone. Say:

A telephone. Interesting. Any ideas about this one? (Accept all reasonable answers.)

Well, I think we should get on this case, but before you go to your investigation teams, let’s pray together.

Pray with the group and dismiss them to small groups.

SMALL GROUP (“Investigation Teams”) (15 – 20 minutes)

Sit in the corner of the room with your back to the wall. Ask the children to sit around you in a semi-circle so that they are facing you and the wall and cannot easily see the children in other groups. Go around the circle student-by-student and ask them to share their high and low point from the previous week. The students may each share anything that they would like or they may pass. Be sure that when a student is sharing, the rest of the group is listening. Say:

Today we’re talking about how we experience God’s salvation. We have already seen that we receive God’s salvation through faith and that we must repent. But what happens next? How do we continue in this new life that God has given us through faith? Let’s open up our case file and see the exact questions we have been given and then let’s dive into God’s Word to see what we can learn about this important question of how we experi-ence God’s salvation.

Open up the case file folder, which inside will have copies of Handout 1 (one per student). Read the questions on the handout aloud with the students. Remind the students that the Bible is a place where we can look for answers to some of the most important questions in life. Together with the students, look up and read the passages listed by each question. Question-by-question discuss the answer(s) that the Bible gives. Make some notes based on the students’ observations from the biblical text. (You may also ask the students to make some notes if they are capable of doing so.) The notes can be written directly on this handout.

LARGE GROUP, PART 2 (“Solving the Case”) (20 – 30 minutes)

Gather the students together in one place. Ask them to share what they found in the Bible question-by-question. After discussing a question, lead the group to come up with an answer that is concise and accurate, based on the Bible, and on which they can all agree. Write this answer on a poster board where the students can all see it. Ask them to write the answer down on their Detective Notebook page (Handout 2, which will go into a loose-leaf binder). Go through each of the questions in this way so that the whole group has agreed upon a formal an-swer for each question and has copied these answers into their Detective Notebooks.

Ask the students to put their notebook page (Handout 2) into their Detective Notebook and then to get a partner and to practice asking and answering these questions plus the ones from the previous lessons.

Regroup the students together again. Re-visit each of the clues and talk about what each has to do with today’s case:

o MIRROR→ Say: In the verses you looked at in James, you learned that someone who reads the Bible and then does not believe or obey it is like someone who looks in the mirror, forgets what they look like, and doesn’t make any changes to their appearance. The Bible is like a mirror for our inner lives. When we read it, we discover how God wants to change us to make us more like Jesus. So, it is important that we read the Bible carefully, that we believe it, and that we make the changes that it tells us to make.

o MEGAPHONE→ Explain that the megaphone represents the fact that God speaks to us about his salvation and his plan for this world and for our lives through his Word. He speaks plainly and clearly, but the question is whether we are paying attention. The megaphone reminds us that God is trying to get our attention and to speak to us.

o TELEPHONE→ Say: The telephone represents prayer. Not only does God speak to us

through his Word and his Holy Spirit, but he wants us to talk with him, too. A telephone is not usually used for one-way conversations. A telephone is for dialogue. God wants us to talk with him about the things going on in our lives. Prayer is one of the ways that we connect with God. He has given us prayer to help experience his salvation.

Close the group in prayer thanking God for his word, the sacraments, and prayer, which help us to experience his salvation.
