Wycinanki Wycinanki is the Polish word for paper-cut designs.  It is a traditional Polish folk art. These folk paper cutouts were used in the 1800's by Polish peasants to decorate their houses.  They usually hung these decorations on white walls and along ceiling beams to make the house more cheery.  Multiple layers of colored paper are folded, cut, and sometimes embossed to create stylized patterns. The complexity of the designs is created by repeating symmetrical patterns and folk motifs inspired by nature and geometric shapes.

Jianzhi

Chinese Paper Cutting, also known as Jianzhi in Chinese, is a unique art form with a long history. Originally, it was only popular among the rich, since paper was highly precious at that time. Later, the art spread among the commons and became a part of everyday life. Most paper-cut artists are women and their main tools are scissors. Paper-cut are chiefly used as decoration, especially for doors and windows. Nowadays, paper-cut can often be found in wedding ceremonies and festivals in China.

ScherenschnitteScherenschnitte which means "scissor cuts" in German is the art of paper cutting. Germans settling in Pennsylvania, known as the Pennsylvania Dutch created paper cutting which were used for marriage and birth certificates, love letters, Valentines, Christmas ornaments, home decoration and simply for the joy of creating art. Many of the Scherenschnitte cuttings have full or partial symmetry in their composition. This is achieved by folding the paper as it is cut.
