The Life of Saint Patrick

Did you know that Ireland’s most famous holiday celebratesthe life of an English man? Patrick was born in England in 387. In 403,when he was sixteen, he was kidnapped from his village. He was taken bya band of pirates to Ireland. There, he was sold as a slave.

Patrick was lonely in Ireland. Their customs and religion wereso different than what he was used to. Most of the Irish worshipped thesun and the moon, but Patrick was a Christian.

He spent six years as a slave in Ireland. One day, he heard avoice. It told him the time was right for him to try to escape. He ranaway from his captors on a boat.

In 409, he was finally able to return home to England to findhis family. He soon had a dream that the Irish people needed him toreturn to Ireland. Before returning to Ireland, Patrick had a lot of work todo. He studied to become a priest. In 430, the Catholic Church madePatrick a bishop.

Finally, in the year 433, he chose to return to Ireland. Hewanted to bring his beliefs to the Irish. Patrick spent over 40 years inIreland telling people what he believed. It is said that he started over300 churches. He died on March 17, 461. Later, the church made him St.Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
