Over the last weeks I asked you to think about eating different fruits and vegetables and why it is important for life. This week I would like to look at a very British Summer event that normally takes place when we go out with families or friends – The Picnic. At this event traditionally a packed meal is eaten outdoors in a scenic place such as a park or near water like a lakeside. The word picnic dates back to 1748 in a letter it is said written by Lord Chesterfield which it associated with card games, drinking and conversation and it may have entered the English Language from this French word.

Picnics are usually eaten using plastic cutlery and plates but many British families buy or have been passed down from Families a Wicker Basket or picnic bag. They often contain Wine Glasses, Napkins and a very British item a Hot Water Flask used for making Tea. Some of them can cost as much as £100 and that is just for the basket.
