Home learning for Year 3 Week Beginning: 15/06/2020 Spelling: This week you will be looking at the prefixes sub-, re- and mis-. The prefix ‘sub-’ means under or below, for example the word ‘submarine’ relates to the boat under the sea. The prefix ‘re-’ means repetition, for example the word ‘rebuild’ means you have to build something again. The prefix ‘mis-’ means wrong or incorrect, for example if you ‘misheard’ someone, you heard them incorrectly. Please click on the link below and click on spelling tiles, to practise using these three prefixes. We would like you to practise on at least three of the games. https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/59/6-More-prefixes- 3-of-3 Challenge: Please use the Queensway spelling sheet and choose one of the activities to help you practise the spellings. Week Beginning: 15/06/2020

Spelling:This week you will be looking at the prefixes sub-, re- and mis-.

Challenge: Please use the Queensway spelling sheet and choose one of the activities to help you practise the spellings. Why don’t you really challenge yourself and choose an activity from the sheet that you haven’t chosen before!

Remember that you can use this grammar lesson to help with your topic task!Reading:This week we would like you to focus on your inference skills again. Last week, you had an image to look at and questions to answer, however, this week it is going to be slightly different. You will be following a guided lesson looking at making inferences about a story using illustrations AND the words.

You are going to become detectives trying to infer based on some short videos! There are some guided videos and then 3 activities for you to complete. Enjoy 😊

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfn6pg8English:This week we will still be focusing on adventure and mystery stories, however this week you will be creating a character description.

Task 1: Please plan a character description based on your adventure story. It is really important to plan so that your writing is well thought of and structured..

When planning, think about the following: Character’s appearance (how they look) Character’s personality (what are they like)

Page 2: mrgrantqueensway.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewThe prefix ‘sub-’ means under or below, for example the word ‘ sub. marine’ relates to the boat under the sea. The prefix

What others think about the character

Task 2: Now that you have planned you character description it is time to write! Remember to use your plan clearly and also the model below to help you.

ModelJack was known as the boy who never wanted to grow up. Living in his little cottage, deep in the heart of somewhere, he was often found soaring around the bubbling stream. Luscious, glossy hair rustled in the wind as his petite body grasped the edges of the rustic, ruby coloured carpet. Jack didn’t understand the feeling of fear or worry and therefore at times he seemed boastful. Innocently smiling with his wide, persuasive eyes, often meant others found it hard to not enjoy his presence.

Task 3: Who can remember what we do after writing? We edit! Please use the YouTube video to watch Miss Penniston model editing her own character description. Please make sure you follow the steps from the Queensway editing poster below.

1. Read backwards to check for spellings. Spelling corrections are written 3 times under your writing.

2. Read forwards, does your writing make sense?

3. Read forwards to check for punctuation and capital letters.

4. Read forwards - one final check.Maths:This week we are going to be focusing on measurement. This year you have already looked at length (mm, cm and m) and mass (g and kg) and now it is time to look at capacity, which focuses on ml and l which stand for millilitres and litres.

Task 1: Please watch the video on our YouTube channel where Mr Grant is introducing this new topic to you. It is really important that you watch this video before carrying on, as this is a new topic. Please answer the following questions after watching the video.

1. How many millilitres (ml) are in 1 litre (l)?2. If I have 5 litres of coca cola, how much is that in millilitres?3. If I had 750 ml of water, how much more water do I need to make a litre (l)?4. Would you use ml or l to measure how much water was in:

A pool? A juice carton? A water bottle? A goldfish tank?

Task 2: Please complete the following questions that relate to capacity. These questions require you to think through your ideas and give detailed explanations. Remember, when answering questions based on measurements, it is really important to read the scales!

1. 2.

3.

Task 3: Now that you are feeling more confident, please have a go at adding and subtracting capacities. Think about all the different methods you can use to add and subtract. If you are feeling unsure, you can ask an adult to discuss each question with you.

Task 4: This activity is optional and is best suited for outdoors. For this activity you will need an adult helper, access to water and a few different containers, cups and beakers, and a measuring jug at one end of the garden, with an empty bucket at the other end. This is a fun outdoor activity in good weather! If you can, add a couple of obstacles along the way!

1. Fill the first container with some water at your starting point.2. Transfer the liquid to a measuring jug and write down how much liquid the

container holds (e.g. 85ml). Take the jug carefully to the other end of your garden and empty the jug into the bucket.

3. Repeat the activity until you have found the capacity of all the containers and cups etc.

4. List your capacities from smallest to largest in millilitres (ml). Add the smallest and largest amounts together.

Challenge: If you would like to challenge yourself further, then click on the two links below. Each link is a different problem that relies on you using your reasoning skills to explain your mathematical thinking. Remember, don’t give up, these are designed to take quite a long time!

https://nrich.maths.org/5979PE/Active lessonPlease find below suggestions for some games/ activities for you to complete at home. Remember that Joe Wicks is still teaching a live PE lesson at 9am every weekday. If you miss the video at 9am, he then uploads the lesson onto his YouTube video at about 9:30am.

https://www.activeoxfordshire.org/school-games/Topic:This week we would like you to focus on PSHE and think about what friendship means to you and how you would describe it. We would like you to read the following poem and then read below the poem to see what your task is.

A friend ship by Roger StevensA friend ship

Is a rowing boatYou both rowAlternatively

A friend shipIs a hovercraft

That skims aboveThe stormy sea

A friend shipIs a submarine

FollowingA secret chart

A friend ship is a sailing boatBourne by the wind

To the harbour’s heart.

Can you see how the poet uses metaphors to describe what friendship means to him? We would like you to create your own poem about friendship using similes and metaphors. Please look at the YouTube video where Miss Penniston models how to create similes for your poem.

Remember to look back at your grammar lesson to help you 😊. The poet decided the refer to friendship as a ‘ship’ but you may want to just focus on friendship as one word, like Miss Penniston did.

E safety information:10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4) Never give out your passwords.

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
