Maps of The Bahamas
2
FACT SHEET: KNOW YOUR COUNTRYThe Bahamas is an archipelago or a group of islands. It is located in the Northern and Western Hemispheres. It consists of over 700 islands, 2,400 uninhabited cays covering an area of over 100,000 square miles of water and 5,400 square miles of land. It lies in the Atlantic Ocean. It nearest neighbors is Florida (U.S.A) 50 miles, Cuba (50 miles) and Haiti. There are about 30 inhabited islands and small cays. Its relative location is about 27◦ N and 79◦W. It lays SE of North America and N of the Caribbean Sea.
The Tropic of Cancer runs through the Exuma and Long Island. This causes the Southern portion to lie within the Tropical zone and the northern portion to lie within the North Temperate Zone, thus causing it to experience a sub-tropical climate.
Its highest point is called Como Hill or Mt Alvernia which is about 206 feet above sea level and is located on Cat Island.
The Capital City is Nassau located on New Providence. The second city is called Freeport located on the island of Grand Bahama. The largest Island is Andros, Most northerly Abaco, Northwesterly, and Grand Bahama. The most easterly island is called San Salvador (Sight of Columbus first Land fall), South Easterly is Inagua (Home of the Morton Salt Industry). Other islands includes: Long Island, Mayaguana, Crooked Island & Acklins, Exuma (National Regatta), Eleuthera (First British Settlement) Mayaguana, Rum Cay, Ragged Island, Cat Island, Bimini and Berry Islands. Main Industry is Tourism. Other industry includes Banking, Finance, Public Service, Fishing, Farming and some light manufacturing.
Bodies of Water
The Bahamas lies in the North Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by shallow water bodies called Banks, channels, passages and sound. The deepest body of water is called the Tongue of the ocean located on the eastern side of the largest island Andros. Andros is also home to the third largest Barrier Reef. The Great Bahama Bank is the largest shallow water bank encompassing most of the central and northern islands with the exception of Abaco and Grand Bahama (Little Bahama Bank) Acklins& Crooked Islands (The Bight of Acklins) and Cay Sal Bank. Three passages separates the south eastern Islands, Crooked Island Passage (between Long Island & Crooked Island) Mayaguana Passage (Between Acklins and Mayaguana) Cacios Passage (between Turks& Cacios & Inagua) Channels include: N.W.Providence Channel (between Grand Bahama & Berry Island) and N.E.Providence Channel (between Abaco & Eleuthera). Other water bodies include: Exuma Sound (Exuma, Long Island and Cat Island), the Straits of Florida, Old Bahama Channel (Andros and Cuba), Nicolas and Santeren Channel
Geographically the islands and cays are made up of marine limestone rocks. The 3 rd largest Barrier reef in the world is located on the eastern coast of Andros. The climate of The Bahamas is mostly sub –Tropical. The low latitude, warm tropical Gulf Stream, and low elevation give the Bahamas a warm and winterless climate.Population (2010 census) 353 65
