Year 5: Home Learning - Week 12 06.07.20 Welcome to week 12 of your home learning from the Year 5 teachers. We enjoyed looking at your work last week and were really impressed with how you responded to the PDL work about being a good friend. It will be very exciting to see some of your friends next week when Year 5 return to school! In the meantime, do still keep in touch through messages either via Class Dojo or Purple Mash – we really appreciate knowing how you all are. Please let us know if we can help in any way. Your class teachers will continue to check in with Class Dojo messages. Many of our teachers are now in school teaching a ‘bubble’ of children. This might mean that your work will be read by someone from the Year 5 team other than your teacher, but please be assured that it will still be responded to. We are continuing to make our phone calls home; again this might be from someone else in the Year 5 team other than your class teacher. We thank you for your understanding with this as we support the children in school as well as the children learning from home. Welcome to week 12 of your home learning from the Year 5 teachers.We enjoyed looking at your work last week and were really impressed with how you

EnglishLast term, we read The Clockwork Crow as our class text. The story starts as Seren Rhys is given a newspaper parcel by a stranger late at night in a freezing Victorian train station. She has no idea what it contains. She is heading for a new life in the remote country house of Plas-y-Fran. But when she gets there, she does not experience the happy Christmas she had hoped for. Armed with a clockwork crow, a magical snow globe and her courage, Seren sets off on a perilous midnight journey to rescue Tomos and bring happiness back to Plas-y-Fran.1. Read the final chapter of The Clockwork Crow (attached to this

email) which ends the story on Christmas day.As you read, remind yourself of how we leave these three characters at the end of this story: the Crow, Seren and Tomos.

The author, Catherine Fisher, has written a sequel to The Clockwork Crow. The sequel opens by describing a scene in the following autumn.What do you think might happen to the three characters in the sequel? How do you think the author might give us clues in the opening pages that tell us how their lives have moved on?

2. Write the first 2 paragraphs of the sequel. It is set in the autumn at Plas-y-Fran. As you write, think about the following: How you will show the reader that the story has moved on. What clues you might give the reader about how the characters are feeling. What the characters might be doing in the opening scene.

MathsWe are continuing to revisit some key topics that we have previously covered in Year 5. This week we are revising problem solving with a focus on using drawings and bar models to represent word problems.1. Watch the following video on solving word problems using bar models:

This week we would like you to carry out your own investigation into the force of air resistance against the force of gravity.1. Make your own paper aeroplane using the instructions below.

2. Try flying your plane. Start from the same spot when you throw your plane.a) Measure how far your plane has flown.b) In order to show accurate results, you will need to test it more than once. Throw it 5

3. Make an adjustment to your plane. For example you could give the wings another fold up or fold down. You could add a paperclip to the front or back. You could make a cut in one or both wings.
