SENATE SCENE Volume 40 Issue 10 MAY 2012 National Convention at Altamonte Springs, Florida is less than six weeks away. That leaves us six weeks in which to make your year the best possible year ever. I am extremely satisfied for the most part with the progress we have made this year in accomplishing the goals of “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Flies”. Don’t get slack - let’s finish the year with a flourish and kick off the new year running! If you haven’t got your registration in for Altamonte Springs, now is the time to do so. If you have not made your hotel reservations, please do so immediately as the rooms are going quite fast! April was a flurry of activity for me. I went to Somerset, New Jersey for a wonderful MAI meeting, and two weeks later was at the great Region IV Calabash. I just barely made it to the Region IX/Oregon Senate 50 th Anniversary, the third week of April, and went to a great meeting in Topeka, Kansas for Region VIII. May takes me to Oklahoma City for Oklahoma Senate’s 40 th Anniversary, then to Springfield, Illinois for the TOYP ceremonies, then to the Canadian National Meeting in London, Ontario. The following weekend I get to take a break to celebrate my Social Security birthday (age 66). Thereafter, it’s the Florida Year End meeting and then the National Convention in Altamonte Springs followed by the Jaycee National Convention in Des Moines. Please keep the following deadlines in mind because they are not flexible:

SENATE SCENE

Volume 40 Issue 10 MAY 2012

National Convention at Altamonte Springs, Florida is less than six weeks away.

I just barely made it to the Region IX/Oregon Senate 50th Anniversary, the third week of April, and went to a great meeting in Topeka, Kansas for Region VIII.

May takes me to Oklahoma City for Oklahoma Senate’s 40th Anniversary, then to Springfield, Illinois for the TOYP ceremonies, then to the Canadian National Meeting in London, Ontario.

- Friendship Nomination to the President by May 20, 2012

- Year End Reports to the President and website by June 5, 2012

- Letters of Recommendation for your State President, National Vice President, Ambassador, National Elected Officer or Appointee to the President by May 15, 2012

- Letters of Recommendation for Outstanding State Treasurer should go to the Treasurer, Randy Young by May 15, 2012

- Your recommendations for Outstanding State or Regional Newsletter shouldgo to the Secretary, Larry Bohn by May 15, 2012.

Looking forward to soaring with the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle at year end in Altamonte Springs. Steve Sutherland, #27073

US JayceesExecutive DirectorJoel Harper

United States Jaycee National Service Center increasing services since our arrival in St. Louis last December:

New Websites Now Available Free of Charge to Local Chapters and State OrganizationsThanks to a working partnership with JCI, new website templates are now available to any USJC local chapter or state organization that wants one. These websites allow local chapters an unprecedented level of flexibility and customization. You can search the new site either as www.USJaycees.org or http://www.jci.cc/local/media/usa

Features of these web sites include the following: • Customizable with local chapter name affixed to the logo • Available in a variety of USJC and JCI colors, all at the preference of the local chapter• Local chapter controls all content, including news, events, programs, and a document library• If the web site stays static for 60 consecutive days, the feed will automatically pull from the National web site, ensuring fresh content for viewers• Administrative rights automatically roll over to new chapter leadership, so the local chapter always has access to the site• Guarantees consistency across annual changes in leadership• Only local chapter presidents have initial access rights, but they may assign access rights to others• Integrated with registered members across the USA and JCI spectrum, enabling members

to IM and video chat with members anytime, anywhere.• Readers can view the web site in their native languageThere is no charge to local chapters to obtain one of these web sites. They are a member benefit, funded by their National and JCI membership dues. If a local chapter is happy with its current web site, it does not need to change. However, local chapters unsatisfied with their current website and associated expenses now have a non-cost alternative.

Communication with MembersFor years the Jaycee Magazine served us well. Times change; however, and we find that today’s young person is more interested in streamlined, highlighted information. In early April we will launch a new tri-annual newsletter that better meets our member’s needs. This new streamlined format better reflects the style and preferences of today’s young person. Also, anyone is welcome to follow us on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TheUnitedStatesJuniorChamber) and twitter (@USJaycees).

Exit SurveysLast December, the NSC started sending exit surveys to members not renewing. We ask them why they joined, what they enjoyed the most, and why they left. Because the surveys are anonymous, we have found respondents willing to candidly explain their decision. We share feedback with National Officers and State Presidents (SPs). We hope SPs pass this information to Local Chapter Presidents and everyone uses the feedback as a benchmark for improvement and betterment.

Web Site AdditionsThe web site is now our primary means of communicating with members. The following materials have been added to the

website within the last three months:

WHERE THE STARS AND STRIPES AND EAGLES FLY

SecretaryLarry Bohn #[email protected]

It has been another whirlwind month of travelling! My thanks to Rita and Hal Bowles and the South Carolina Senate, Sonny Jones and the Oregon Senate, and Rob Wiley and the Kansas Senate for great hospitality and great times enjoyed at their Region meetings. It is such a shame that so many of our Senators miss the opportunity to make new friends at Region and National meetings. Friendship is what we are about!

One final reminder - the State Officers Directory form is included as an attachment to this Scene, has been posted on the website and has been sent as a special email to all current State Senate Presidents and Secretaries. WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FORM, PLEASE COPY IT AND ATTACH IT TO AN EMAIL ADDRESSED TO ME AT [email protected]. Last year’s Secretary Dawna is still receiving the Directory forms and has to forward them to me.

As soon as your new officers are elected, please complete the

form and return it to me. I really need this information by the end of May if I am to have a temporary directory available for National Convention. Thanks for your cooperation!

Travels this month include the Illinois TOYP weekend and the Canadian JCI Senate Crew meeting in London , ON.

This is the last Senate Scene for the 2011-12 year and it gives me the chance to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your secretary this year. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as a part of President Steve’s team during this WHERE THE STARS AND STRIPES AND EAGLES FLY year! See you in Altamonte Springs!

TreasurerRandy Young #[email protected]

We just finished the Regional Meeting Tour and all were very well attended. The hospitality was great and it is always fun to see many friends and make some new ones. The Presidential Sweepstakes are closing in on a banner year thanks to all your support. We still have time to buy, sell, and draw for more tickets to make this a record year.

I am pleading for your help to get the June dues information to Larry Ferguson and checks to me by June 1. We need to have all information available at the Annual Meeting, so we need your help to get it in on time.

Please remember to write letters of recommendation for Treasurers for the Tom Stone Memorial Award and forward them to me by May 15th.Debbie and I look forward to seeing you in Altamonte Springs.

Chairman of the BoardMike O’Connell #[email protected]

Since last writing I have, by way of a lack of coordination, managed to take myself off the Spring travel circuit. While attending the Region IX/Oregon 50th Anniversary Meeting in Clackmas, OR, I managed to rupture my right quadriceps; bottom line – surgical repair, no driving until sometime in July, six months of rehab and no golf this season. Hopefully, Kathy won’t be so tired of me by June that she will still be willing to drive to Altamonte Springs, FL for the Annual Meeting although there has already been some muttering about duct-tape and rope.

As of this writing the following US JCI Senators have officially filed to serve the US JCI Senate in the 2012-13 program year:

President – Bruce Geddes #35527, Ohio

Administrative Vice President – Larry Bohn #37024, Maryland

I have one more piece of business to report from the Mid-Atlantic Institute Meeting that was held last month in Somerset, NJ. I knew from the past that MAI raises the most money for the Foundation, but as usual Terry Seeley, Region 2 Fundraising Chairman, and Gary Williams, Region 3 Fundraising Chairman, outdid themselves again this year by not only going over their goal, but exceeding the highest amount of money ever raised at this event. A check in the amount of $4,273 was sent to Pat Holbert!! CONGRATULATIONS to Terry and Gary and their committees for their continued outstanding fundraising efforts, and adding 4 new members to the Foundation. As I write my final article for the Senate Scene I am also preparing for National Convention. Thanks to Lloyd Lingle, my predecessor, for helping in my effort to make my Region 2 Party Booth a great success. I have some really great ideas, and Lloyd has been instrumental in helping me pull it all together. The ideas were discussed at MAI, but if any of my states have any added ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact Lloyd or myself

[email protected] or [email protected].

Land of the Free…..Home of the Brave is our theme and I hope that my states will be proud of what will be presented. Your financial help as well as manpower will be needed, so please let us know when you’ll be available to help with set up on Wednesday between 2:00 – 5:30 p.m. I have to attend a meeting during set up so Lloyd will be in charge until I return. Don’t forget…..the information requested for the booth is due to me or Lloyd by June 5.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who has helped me during this last year. As I said in my speech at MAI, I have been treated like royalty and for that I am very grateful, and have learned a tremendous amount from all of you. Special thanks to my Presidents Randy, Marcia, Dave and Gary for allowing me to attend functions in your states. I came to represent the Senate national organization and let you know that we are there to help if you needed it, but mostly I learned from all of you. This has been the experience of a life time and I will move forward a stronger person for having this opportunity.

I wish you all great success in the coming years and look forward to seeing you again soon.

National VP Region IIIAriel Jones #[email protected]

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzz,

I can’t believe it’s almost over. Wow – this is such a bittersweet moment for me as I end my tenure in one of the best years of my life in service to this organization. The success of the region has been due to the dedication of our State

Page 6: nysjcisenate.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewSATURDAY JUNE 23TH TRAINING/BANQUET/CLOSING Breakfast 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM Royal Palm Past National President’s Breakfast 7:30 AM

Presidents and their commitment to making their respective states stronger. I’m so proud to have had the opportunity to work with them.

DC Senate President, Marilyn Mueller, #51429, and her team are still going strong. They are gearing up for the year-end meeting in Florida where they will elect a new President. This will also be the last time for anyone who is interested to join the DC Senate for a nominal fee of $5. The dues will increase to $10 beginning July 1st. Also, for the first time in a long time, DC Senate Pins will be available. And again, their biggest accomplishment for the year has been a reconnection with the Washington DC – Downtown JC’s. Wow – way to go team! Feel free to contact President Marilyn at [email protected], if you want further information as this group continues to celebrate freedom in a major way.

President Bob and the Maryland team are still applauding one of the best events this year with the Wine and Beer tasting with International fare and flare event on March 24th hosted by Sam and Marilyn Young. With over 12 different countries represented and with over 30 people in attendance, it was one of the hot ticket items of the year. It’s never, ever too early to put a reminder date on your calendar for ‘August’ as the world renowned Maryland Crab Feed will be held once again at the home of Jimmy Harris. It’s a can’t be missed ‘crab-pinched’ event! Lastly, President Bob and the Maryland team are asking everyone in the region and beyond to help support the candidacy of Larry Bohn, #37024 as the 2012-2013 USJCI Senate Administrative Vice President. As always, feel free to contact President Bob at [email protected] for more information regarding this

and other exciting Maryland activities.

The Leader of the G.A.N.G, Tom King, #59642, [email protected] continues to be beezing away as his team is steadily receiving registration forms in hosting the 2013 MAI ‘Capital Affair’ in Northern VA, near the Dulles airport area, April 4-7 and they have also tours of the famous Virginia wineries as well as a tour of Washington, DC. They had a great turnout for ‘A Day with Mr. Thomas Jefferson on April 14th in Charlottesville, VA where members received a house and grounds tour of Monticello and Michie Tavern. This was part of the ongoing partnership to invite the Virginia Jaycees to join the Senate in their outings. The Jaycees have ‘Returned the Gesture’ by inviting the Senate to be part of their Friday night Social – a night at the ballgame – at the Virginia Jaycees meeting in Roanoke on May 18-20th. The Senate will also be manning the registration table, hosting First-timers and also the Jaycees Performers reception! In addition, they are poised to welcome 1 new Senator! Great job, Virginia!

And of course, our honey delight, West Virginia President, Chris Hufford, #63736, is feeling good these days since they are gearing up to host the USJCI Senate Fall Board meeting on September 20-23 in Charleston, WV. Detailed information can be found in the Senate scene, THE BUZZ newsletter, the WV newsletter, and their most active Facebook page. If you’re not a member, feel free to ‘FRIEND’ them and be up to date on information regarding the convention. Help is needed in the form of manpower – registration desk, hospitality, etc. So please let the team know if you’re able to help. They just held their

meeting in conjunction with the WV Jaycees on April 27-28 in Wierton where the Senate hosted hospitality all weekend for the Jaycees, provided training, hosted their first-timers program and most notably served as judges and provided immediate feedback for their Professional Skills competition. Look for more great information and let President Chris know ([email protected]). She’ll be a honey about it and make sure you enjoy some West Virginia hospitality. The Region has been buzzy this year, and it’s all due to the tremendous amount of commitment and accountability of those aforementioned states and their leaders. I would be remiss, if I did not acknowledge the hard work of the 4 best State Presidents ever!!!!, DC - Marilyn Mueller, #51429, MD - Bob Kountz, #43029, VA - Tom King, #59642, WV- Chris Hufford, #63736. They have been more than supportive for the Bee-Hive initiatives and have dealt with my energy level to the point that they only responded with a smile. I’ve been at the bottom of the pool, lost in the pantry on the way to lunch, but I have reconnected with old friends and have had the unbelievable experience of talking to so many Jaycees that our Region III States serve and their leaders. The Jaycees have all recognized the tremendous role the respective state Senates have played in the success of their Jaycee states. I can only thank the Senate Presidents once again as it is because of their actions that they have inspired me to want to be a better leader…and as I continue to learn – they have been my best teachers.

As a region, we are most proud of two individuals; Larry Bohn,#37024, candidate for USJCI Senate 2012-2013 Administrative Vice President; and Diane Baerveldt, #48476,

Page 7: nysjcisenate.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewSATURDAY JUNE 23TH TRAINING/BANQUET/CLOSING Breakfast 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM Royal Palm Past National President’s Breakfast 7:30 AM

who was elected at our Mid Atlantic Institute Meeting (MAI) as the next Region III National Vice President. We are so proud of both of you and are excited that you will do a fantastic job in your respective roles. CONGRATULATIONS!

So we have come full circle and I am more than buzzed, to have been part of the Bee-Hive. I have been stung by the enthusiasm – and I can only pray that Diane will have an even better year than I did --- it was so worth the precious moment to be elected and the tenure as the Region III – National Vice President. I could not have imagined the positive experience. I look forward to the next time we meet as we believe that in order to understand our creed and know where the stars and stripes and the eagle fly – you must ‘Be INSPIRED!’ by those that have helped you and the opportunity to ‘BE’ the positive difference for all those with whom you come in contact.

HAPPY EASTER SENATORS!

OH NO……….. IT’S ALMOST OVER!This realization has finally hit me. My year as NVP is almost

over. What am I going to do with myself? Oh yeah, I can still travel to the meetings…. I can visit all my friends, I can relax and just be me…wait, that’s what I have been doing all year! All kidding aside, it has really been fun this year.

The Region IV Meeting & Calabash Beach Bash at Myrtle Beach, SC was fabulous. Boy did the SC Senate, with the help of the NC Senate put on one heck of a great bash! The weather was absolutely beautiful but a little windy and cool. Needless to say, I did not high tail it down to the ocean waters for a dip….lol! Did a little too much shopping though!

According to Chairman Rita Bowles #59336, they had approximately 130 pre-registered and a few more joined us for dinner Saturday night. I must say the Chicken Bog was exceptionally good this year, great job Hal! We had our Region IV meeting on Saturday afternoon. Four out of five of the Region IV Presidents were in attendance: Florida President Doug White #52995, Georgia President Mandi Howard #62767, North Carolina President Jeff Williams #65414, and South Carolina President Roger Graham #68945. Each president gave a short report of what was going on in their states.

We also were honored to have four out of the five 2012-13 US JCI Senate candidates visit Region IV for the weekend. They were Bruce Geddes #35527 running for President, Larry Bohn #37024 running for Administrative Vice President, Randy Young #46420 running for Treasurer and Steve Sutherland #27073 running for Chairman of the Board….lol! Each candidate gave a short campaign speech and Steve gave an inspiring talk to keep

us working hard to finish out this year.

Next we held our elections for Region IV NVP. Mrs. Rita Bowles #59336 from the great state of South Carolina was elected your 2012-13 NVP. After the meeting we concluded our Silent Auctions for the South Carolina Senate and for the US JCI Senate Foundation Ken James Memorial Scholarship. I am proud to say that we collected approximately $950 for Ken’s Account. The balance of the account before this auction was $10,643.75. I was so in hopes that we could reach the $20,000 during my year as NVP, but we will get there eventually.

I attended the Alabama Senate Spring Meeting in Guntersville, Alabama this past weekend. The meeting went well and they held their elections for next year’s officers. New officers for the upcoming year are: Melinda Hargett #65883 President; Steve Reaves #49233 Vice President; Beverly Westfall #66368 Secretary/Treasurer. Congratulations to you all!

If anyone is interested in visiting Region IV during the month of May, we would love for you to come and visit us in the sunny south. Check out our upcoming events for the month.

This has been a fabulous year, one I will never forget. I have so enjoyed visiting the different states and enjoying all the wonderful hospitality. I look forward to seeing everyone in Altamont Springs. We are all going to have a wonderful time. Until then, remember this………

To laugh often and much;To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others.

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a

garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!

“Soar with Region IV”

National VP Region VOwen Meador #[email protected]

Fellow Senators,Well the year is coming to a close but there are still plenty of great events coming up. My current plan is to travel to the Ohio JCI 44th Year End Meeting & Elections. Then I will be off on a journey to the great north country of Canada for the Thames River Crew Meeting. Finally, the next stop will be the national meeting in Altamonte Springs, Florida. I have truly had a wonderful year. I can’t express enough thanks for the Senators in Region V and all the Senators nationwide who have supported me and made this year a special

one. I couldn’t have had such a great experience without a great team next to me. State Presidents, Kate Patterson #52517 of Illinois, Mike Shoback #45316 of Indiana, Jim Daugherty #51172 of Kentucky, Deb Mogdis #62260 of Michigan, and Paul Hartmann #58202 of Ohio have worked very hard to make their states and Region V very successful this year. I admire their dedication to this wonderful organization.

I also would like to express my deepest thanks to my lovely wife Judith for helping me grow and giving me support to help me reach my goals. She has been a great travel partner. WOW!! Did we ever prove that statement in a big way the weekend of April 20-22. This was when we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Oregon JCI Senate. We had 135 people at the Saturday Evening Banquet including US JCI Senate President Steve Sutherland and First Lady Dawne, Administrative Vice President Bruce Geddes and his wife Jean, Chairman of the Board Mike O'Connell, Secretary Larry Bohn and Chief of Staff Ron Whitmore. We also had three US JCI Senate Past Presidents, several past National Vice Presidents and many other special guests.

Saturday morning we held the Region IX and Oregon Annual meetings and Saturday afternoon was spent playing golf, shopping and sightseeing. During the banquet Saturday evening Friendship #46 was presented to Millie Highfill from Oregon. Ronn Passmore #32935 was installed as the 50th President of the Oregon JCI Senate along with his new board.

One of the highlights of the evening was a brief review by decades of the 50 year history of the Oregon JCI Senate. We also had our annual memorial service honoring the seven Senators that passed away this year. During the weekend the hospitality room was open and lots of fellowship took place. It was a great weekend and we appreciate everyone that attended.

Coming up in the near future several states will be having their annual meetings and elections. Idaho will be meeting in Riggins, Idaho on April 27-29. Montana will be meeting at The Fairmont Hot Springs Resort near Butrte, Montana on May 4-6. Washington will meet

in Ellensburg on June 2 for their annual meeting and elections.

Our newest state organization will be having a big social and meeting on August 9-12 to install their officers and kick off their new organization. They also are planning to have a fishing trip and several tours so if you are looking for a place to vacation, come to Alaska.

Also during the summer several of the states are planning on camp outs. I will have to provide those dates later. You are all invited to come to the northwest and enjoy the beautiful scenery and fellowship.

Yours in the Senate Spirit,

National VP Region XClarence “CJ” Jorif #[email protected]

It’s hard to believe that the end of our year is right around the corner. I’m grateful for the past year which was full of personal growth and lifelong experiences which I was afforded as your Region X National Vice President. As a military officer, I was taught and realized early that a leader is only as good as their personnel. With that having been said, my Region X presidents and senators are the best!!!

Congratulations are in order to President Dee Ennis, Nevada

JCI Senate; President Lorraine Neal, California JCI Senate; President Kris Preston, Arizona JCI Senate; and President Bill Petti, Hawaii JCI Senate. Thank you for your leadership and dedication to make your organizations better for your membership and the positive impact that you’ve had upon your communities.

It’s been an honor and privilege to serve with and represent you – Region X. Congratulations to AZ Senator Phil Friedman who was provisionally elected as the Region X NVP for 2012 – 2013. Phil will be confirmed at our US JCI Senate National Convention to be held from June 19th – 23rd, 2012 in Altamonte Springs, FL.

President Kris has volunteered to be the Region X Chair for our States Party and has appropriately identified our theme as being, “The Wild Wild West.” I can't wait to see how this will all come together in Florida. There are guaranteed to be more surprises in store for everyone in attendance. Make sure to bring the proper attire with you so that you can properly represent Region X proudly.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in a mere 6 ½ weeks. Don’t worry, I’ll bring the suntan lotion!!!

The 2011-2012 year is rapidly coming to a close with the final dues kits due June 1. These were emailed to state treasurers and presidents on April 15. If you have not received them please let me know. State presidents please encourage your treasurers to turn in their dues kit as early as possible. We can make adjustments to them if need be after the submission.

If your state is in a transition period and are changing officers please let me know and I will forward the dues kits to new treasurers or feel free to forward them yourself.

As for national convention in Florida next month, please have newly elected treasurers attend the treasurer training session where we will cover the quarterly dues kit information for next year as well as Mentors mailings. Returning treasurers are welcome to attend also to share in their past experiences.

I want to thank all the state treasurers that were early and those that met the quarterly deadlines in getting the dues kits in during the year. It makes my job and National Treasurer Randy Young’s a whole lot easier when submitted on time.

Hope to see everyone in Altamonte Springs “Where the Stars & Strips and The Eagle Fly”.

 First TimersJenny Bruner #[email protected]

Greetings Fellow Senators:

The Senate year is quickly coming to an end. It has been a wonderful year. I would like to thank President Steve for allowing me to serve as First Timers Chair this year. I have had a wonderful time running this program.

It is all about friendships and I have cultivated many more this year and hope to add a few more in Florida at the year- end meeting. I am anxiously awaiting the list of first timers that I will be meeting in Florida. You will be able to recognize these individuals easily. I went with Region IV’s theme and the theme of the convention, so they will be wearing flight wings (the kind that they give to little kids when they fly for the first time). Thank you, Debbie Young for providing those!

I will be running another version of “The Amazing Senate Race” that will last for a few days during the convention. I want the first timers to experience all the aspects of a National meeting, such as hospitality, foundation auction, regions party, as well as making new friends and learning what our organization is all about. Please let me know if you know of someone coming as a first timer this year.

I am particularly looking forward to this convention because my son will be attending for the whole week with his girlfriend. They will be around a little while, but plan on visiting Mickey Mouse’s house and all the other wonderful sightseeing opportunities that Orlando has to offer. They will both be returning from Afghanistan at the end of May, so will be on a well-deserved vacation.

All in all it has been a fun year. Hope to see you in Florida!

Presidential SweepstakesCarol “CJ” Jordan #[email protected]

It is really hard to believe this year of "Where the Stars & Stripes & the Eagle Fly" will soon be over. Where has this year gone? If you have not purchased your sweepstakes tickets, there is still time. We will be selling tickets right up to 30 minutes before the drawing on Wednesday June 20 in Altamonte Springs, Fl. You don't want to miss your chance to win the grand prize of $2,000 or one of the other wonderful prizes that have been donated.

Speaking of prizes, we are still in need of more prizes (please see the article from prize co-chairman, Lori & Angie). We have had some wonderful prizes donated this year. Has your State committed to a prize yet? Even regions, 2,4.6,8 and 10, please contact Lori Oakland, [email protected] and odd regions 1,3,5.7 and 9 contact Angie Struttmann, [email protected]

Please be sure & return your ticket stubs and money to Ticket Chairman, Pam Padgett, 610 Independence Dr., Jacksonville, NC 28546. Please make sure all stubs and money are mailed to Pam no later than June 13 (so she will have them before she leaves for Florida). If you can't mail them before June 13, please bring them to Florida. For every 2 tickets you purchase for $25.00, you receive 1 ticket free.

Before we start the sweepstakes drawing, we will be having the annual Regions’ Party. The theme this year is America-Land of the Free, Home of the Brave. The rules for the Regions’ Party are in the latest issue of the

Mentors. If you have any questions, please contact Regions party chairman, Denise Lyons Conrad, [email protected]

We are getting close to our goal, but we really need your help. Thank you to all the regions for running the $5.00 ticket sale or selling tickets at your regional meetings. All States with meetings in May and June, please sell tickets or run the $5.00 ticket sale.

I have been very lucky this year to have such a wonderful committee. Thank you so much to Pam, Lori, Angie and Denise (and to Mike Sawyer) for all your hard work on this committee. Special thanks to President Steve for giving me the opportunity to chair this wonderful committee and to all the Exec team, Bruce, Larry, Randy, and Regional Vice-Presidents, thank you for your support of the committee and this sweepstakes. Also special thanks to last year's chairman, John Robinson for all his help and support this year.

See you in Florida.

May Flowers, where are the May Flowers???

As of May 1st, we have 48 prizes donated!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! If you haven’t done so yet, you can email either of us (Lori is working with Regions 2-4-6-8-10 and Angie is working with Regions 1-3-5-7-9) to let us know what your donation will be. Our email addresses are below. Angie and Lori have been contacting State Presidents

and National Officers to determine contributions. Be prepared to be pestered/hounded – whatever you want to call it. We are just looking for a response from everyone.

States we have heard from (by Region): Region 1 – NVP and CT; Region 2 – NVP and PA; Region 3 – NVP and MD, VA and WV; Region 4 – FL, GA, NC and SC; Region 5 – IL, MI, and OH; Region 6 – NVP and IA, MO, and WI; Region 7 – NO ONE!!!; Region 8 – KS and TX; Region 9 – NVP, ID and MT; and Region 10 – only Hawaii! Please note – this list does NOT include donations committed to by individuals, ONLY STATES and NVP’s.

*** BREAKING NEWS *** Ok, in the last article we had just received notice of a very cool prize – well, we’ve got ANOTHER ONE (at least, several of these prizes are pretty cool). AVP Bruce Geddes is donating a pair of tickets to a Cleveland Browns game this fall! The prize winner will have the choice of selected games, so come prepared with dates in mind for BOTH sets – Jets and Browns!!

As a reminder, with the larger prizes – such as items that would be hard to ship or to carry back on a plane – please take a photo of it and send the photo and a brief description of it to either Lori or Angie and a flyer will be made for that item. The winner of the prize will receive that flyer and contact information for the donor so that arrangements can be made for shipping. The donor will receive the winner’s information as well.

This should cut down on the shipping costs for all involved, and avoid the awkward explanations to the TSA as to why you have 4 bottles of wine in your suitcase… And, usually

as luck has it, the bigger gifts end up coming back to your home state and the donor ends up bringing it back anyway! Please have those details to Lori or Angie by June 5th. That will allow us time to get the flyers prepared for the drawing.

With your help, we can make this an AMAZING Sweepstakes Drawing this year.

As May flowers start to bloom with the help from those April showers (and precipitation in the form on snow for some parts of the country), State Jaycee organizations are, also, beginning to bloom. Many of the State Jaycee Organizations have just completed the first review of their state plan and are determining how to focus the next few months in order to achieve their goals for the year. This review offers an excellent opportunity to mentor your State Jaycee leaders, assist them with their review and Return The Favor.

The final region held their Spring meeting in which they

recognized recipients of the USJCI Senate Winter Board Meeting Return The Favor Awards who were not able to be in Norcross. Return The Favor Certificates of Merit were presented to Dan (#67974) and Lisa (#67973) Badger for their support of the Region Black Jaycees and their Regional Director. A Certificate of Merit was, also, presented to Brian Heisel (#68917) for his support of local chapters Fourth of July celebrations and Haunted Houses. Both recipients are members of the Iowa JCI Senate.

This month’s Return The Favor spotlight – Pennsylvania JCI Senate. More than twenty-five senators assisted the Pennsylvania Jaycees with their signature fundraising project at the National Apple Harvest Festival. Senators have served as judges for notebooks and individual awards competitions at state board meetings. They have, also, served as mentors to Jaycee Leaders in providing feedback and support in addressing by-law issues, state board meeting planning, and hosting the US Jaycees Governmental Affairs Leadership Seminar this September. Congratulations on all of your service!

Senators can be involved in a great Return The Favor opportunity by identifying potential new members for the Jaycees. Senators simply need to provide the names and contact information for potential members to the US Jaycees, through the Executive Director, Joel Harper ([email protected]), and follow-up contact will be coordinated for all submitted by the Jaycees. There is certainly no better way to Return The Favor than to recommend co-workers, neighbors or others who could benefit from being a member of the Greatest Young

Persons Organization In The World!

Please remember that the final submission deadline for Return The Favor Nominations and Logs is June 1, 2012. This is an “in-hand” deadline and electronic submissions are encouraged! As the final submission for the year, you can submit from past months (beginning with June, 2011) if you missed earlier submission deadlines. The Nominations submitted will be considered for the June Board Meeting and Year-End awards to be presented in Florida.

If you have any questions about the 2011 – 2012 Return The Favor Program, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks for all of those who are making an impact by Returning The Favor!

LAST CALL. As young partiers we hated those words but they made us pay attention right then!! Each year in the Senate there comes a time to celebrate the end of one administration and the beginning of a new one. Please stop what you are doing now and send me pictures of your successes from this past year. We want an awesome end of year show with everyone expecting to see their face on screen. That cannot happen if you leave your best pictures home on your computer.

Please send them now for the end of year video and program. Thanks!

PS. Deadline for the August Mentors will be June 24th. If you will have an article due, please try to get your articles to me before the National Convention. Thanks again!

Coming in on a wing and a prayer.

The Senate year is coming to an end…but there is still time to bring in those sponsor sheets for the Mentors. Let us know where

you’ve been, and who you’ve been with.

At the National Convention we will take a moment to recognize the states/regions who have been constantly sending in their sponsor sheets. I would like to thank President Steve for allowing me to be part of his team this past year. Finally, I would like to thank all of you for your continued participation in the Sponsor Sheet Program. This program raises a major part of the monies needed to keep the quality of our publication as good as it is.

Here’s to the Veterans. Make sure you thank them for all they have done for you through the years.

Hopefully we’ll see you all in Florida.
