POP ART LINO CUTTING
Pop Art: A Brief History
In the years following World War II, the United States enjoyed an unprecedented period of economic and political
growth. Many middle class Americans moved to the suburbs, spurred by the availability of inexpensive, mass-
produced homes. Elvis Presley led the emergence of rock and roll, Marilyn Monroe was a reigning film star, and
television replaced radio as the dominant media outlet.
Yet by the late 1950s and early 1960s, a “cultural revolution” was underway, led by activists, thinkers, and artists who
sought to rethink and even overturn what was, in their eyes, a stifling social order ruled by conformity. The Vietnam
War incited mass protests, the Civil Rights Movement sought equality for African Americans, and the women’s
liberation movement gained momentum.
ANDY WORHOL:
LINO CUTTING:
In this project, you will be creating a series of 4 lino cut portraits using colours and styles used by Worhol during the ‘POP ART’ era.
How:1)You will need to take a piece of tracing paper and cut it to the size of a lino block2)Take a selfie using your tech and ensure that it’s of your face/shoulders ONLY and is no larger than your sheet of tracing paper3)Carefully trace your image onto the paper. Don’t trace every little detail.4)Go over your tracing again with pencil to make sure you have lots of carbon on the paper.5)Tape your image FACE DOWN and shade in the back of your tracing paper completely. This will transfer the face onto the lino.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiQPOIwObrQ
6)On the lino, go over the face with a permanent marker.7)Carefully cut out pieces of construction paper that are the same size as your lino. You will need 6 of them. Choose a variety of colours.8)Transfer paint onto the paper in various ways to resemble the Warhol design!
