Periodic Table Key Revision Facts
Metals make up 3⁄4 of the periodic table and are found on the left-hand side. Metals are: hard, shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, sonorous,
ductile and malleable. Dmitri Mendeleev organised the periodic table based on patterns. He left gaps
because. he knew new elements would be found in the future. Periods are rows. Groups are columns. Lithium, sodium and potassium are examples of metals found in group 1. The metals in group 1 are more reactive as you move down the column. They
are all react with water to produce an alkaline solution. lithium + water lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
Fluorine, chlorine and bromine are examples of elements found in group 7. They are all non-metals and have low melting points.
In a displacement reaction, the more reactive metal or halogen will displace the lesser reactive metal or halogen from its compound.
Neon, helium and argon are all examples of noble gases. They have low melting and boiling points and are very unreactive.
