We run a dynamic campaign in South Africa aimed at tackling the climate crisis, through campaigning for an urgent just transition away from coal and towards a future powered by renewable energy. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The Climate and Energy Campaigner will be responsible for collaborative strategic planning and leading the execution and coordination of Energy campaign project work. The campaigner will also be responsible for effective engagement with key stakeholders, including communities, government, business, media and civil society. The role includes effective campaign implementation, political lobbying, media work, acting as a spokesperson and research. We run a dynamic campaign in South Africa aimed at tackling the climate crisis, through campaigning for an urgent just transition away from coal and towards a future powered by renewable energy.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Climate and Energy Campaigner will be responsible for collaborative strategic planning and leading the execution and coordination of Energy campaign project work. The campaigner will also be responsible for effective engagement with key stakeholders, including communities, government, business, media and civil society. The role includes effective campaign implementation, political lobbying, media work, acting as a spokesperson and research.

The main responsibilities of the Climate and Energy Campaigner are to:

Provide expertise and input into the development of the campaign strategy, campaign projects and funding proposals, where relevant.

Lead key pieces of project work, and ensure that specific relevant campaign activities are properly budgeted for. Project work is likely to involve all or some of the following techniques (often involving teamwork): public communication and engagement activities, media work, collaboration with other organisations, research, political and corporate work and the use of legal and scientific approaches to issues.

Develop and maintain relationships with external parties and ensure collaboration with local and national authorities, NGOs, partners, community leaders and all other important stakeholders within each project as required.

Prepare substantive briefings, reports, press releases, opinion pieces and updates to inform staff, media and stakeholders on specific campaign issues, progress and outcomes.

Represent Greenpeace at relevant meetings/conferences and act as a spokesperson. Keep abreast of external trends and debates in order to identify campaign/public

engagement opportunities. Identify, commission and coordinate background investigations/research and science

needs. Coordinate and produce internal and external reports on campaign activities as required. Prepare and oversee production and distribution of campaign publications/outputs in

collaboration with the campaign team and engagement team. These should be within the agreed budget and timeframes, ensuring outputs of a high quality.

Skills required / qualifications:

Undergraduate degree. A clear understanding of climate change and the energy system in South Africa. Knowledge and experience of campaigning and mobilization. Minimum of three years of strategic campaign planning experience or work experience in

the relevant campaign area. The ability to devise and conduct innovative, high quality public communications in

campaigns. The ability to analyse environmental issues in terms of campaign opportunities and in terms

of overall strategic objectives. Strong teamwork skills. Strong problem-solving, analytical and negotiation skills. The ability to effectively manage projects, external consultants, volunteers and staff. The ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships with partners and other

stakeholders. The ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people, both

verbally and in writing. An understanding of the importance of peaceful protest in campaigning. Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho (or another South African official language beyond
