Lord of the Flies - Reading AssignmentsIn addition to guided reading questions, you will have three tasks
to complete while reading Lord of the Flies. All tasks should be completed in this packet, which will be submitted and graded at
the end of the unit.
JOURNALS:1. First, you will need to complete one journal response per chapter. Each journal should select one passage or quote and connect it to a major theme in Lord of the Flies. You must copy down the quote/passage and follow it with a proper MLA citation. You must write at least 6 sentences per chapter response. These journal responses will not be plot summary of the chapters, but rather a full analysis of a specific event/quote (per chapter) in connection to a major theme. You cannot use first person, second person, or contractions. You should always write about literature with present-tense verbs. Themes to choose from include:
● Fear of the Unknown
● Leadership/Qualities of a Good Leader
● (Unnecessary) Violence and Brutality
● Childhood vs. Adulthood (Loss of Innocence)
● Human Nature (Good vs. Evil)
● Civilization vs. Savagery
LOGS:2. Second, you will create detailed character logs for seven major characters. These characters are Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Simon, Roger, the Littluns, and the Beast. For each character, keep a list of personality traits, physical descriptions, and important actions, ideas, and statements. Be sure to include textual quotations/evidence whenever relevant with page numbers to support all claims. You will need to continually update these lists, especially as characters begin to change and develop throughout the novel.
CREATE YOUR OWN VOCAB. LIST:3. Third, you will need to find and list three challenging words you encounter from each chapter. These words will be compiled to create our Lord of the Flies vocabulary list. List the word and its page number. At this point, you do not need to include definitions just yet.
*All assignments on a chapter are due the same day that reading the chapter is due. Chapter journal responses may be randomly collected or checked at any time, so keep your work up to
date. You should be proud of this final product. In a PreAP class, it is expected that you are pushing yourself beyond the bare minimum in your analysis of a text. Remember, you are
preparing for an AP class next year.
