LibraryClarkson's library continues to be a vibrant classroom where students and teachers collaborate on exciting projects. We work with students to engage them in reading, critical thinking, multiple literacies, inquiry, and metacognition. Our collection continues to grow with the addition of new fiction and non-fiction works in diverse languages to meet the needs of our student community. In order to support BYOD (bring your own device), we have 17 new tablets that students can sign out. We are accessible 24/7 through the school's website and the library MyClass site. Come on in and check us out!

Drama

We’ve been busy in the drama studios this semester and the creative energy was

awesome! Students have worked on enhancing communication skills, working with masks, exploring characters, writing scripts and of course, acting. Congratulations to all our students who created and performed original pieces of theatre for their culminating tasks. Students chose to explore timely topics ranging from eating disorders and teen depression to the hazards of texting and the Canadian prison system. Outstanding work everyone!

The drama studios are getting a facelift! After the holidays, the cold weather froze the water pipes and a flood ensued! The good news is the drama studio will be ready for semester two with new drywall, paint, carpet and tiles! Drop by to see our new and improved studios!

Coming in February...The Sears Ontario Drama Festival! On Thursday, February 27th, Clarkson will present a one-act play and we’ll also play host to visiting school Stephen Lewis Secondary. Curtain is at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are $8.00. Remember that the $8.00 ticket serves as a pass to all other Sears Drama Festival shows in Peel and Toronto! Please come on out and support our student actors and directors!

Visual ArtsThe Visual Art Program continues to create an inspiring atmosphere with a new mural going on in the cafeteria. We have devoted this mural to our Cancer Drive and have infused the mural with all of the excitement this school experiences with raising money for Camp Ooch. Neil McGuire, a grade 11 student, developed the design for the mural and worked with Mr. Kardash and Mrs. Zottola to tweak the design and get funding for the materials. A small crew continues to work on finishing the mural before our the Cancer Drive gets underway. Thank you to Meagan, Nafisa, Eryn, Yeo Myong, Cynthia and Neil

for their artistic talent and hard work. We can't wait to see the finished mural unveiled!

Grade 12 students ventured to the One of a Kind art show at the CNE grounds to see what artists do to make a living. They experienced the show and were able to interact with the artisans and ask pertinent questions such as how much it costs to get a booth at the show. It was truly inspiring. Grade 11 students have finished working on their large watercolour landscapes with much success and are now focused on their inspired oil painting. Look for these to be on display in February. Grade 10 students are working on their large-scale elephant and architectural watercolour works and are beginning to understand how much work it really is! Grade 9's are finishing up their oil painting of apples and have a new level of respect for this tricky fruit!

We are also getting ready for our annual art auction at Cancer Drive with some amazing work already in progress.... photographic work, a graffiti canvas, large-scale work in oil and even some watercolour works. Be sure to save your pennies!

PhotographyPhotography is alive and well using the new Mac desktops and the Nikon DSLRs to snap some inspiring images. There are new photographic displays in the main office, be sure to check them out.

Mathematics Department

Students at Clarkson Secondary School continue to challenge themselves mathematically by volunteering to participate in various math contests. During semester one, students attempted the University of Waterloo's Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Contests and the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge Contest. The results for those contests are now available and we would like to congratulate all of the participants for their interest and personal achievements. Kylin L. and Shaoyu T. will be receiving certificates of distinction while Natalie B. will receive an honours certificate for their performances in the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge Contest. Qinyu L., Chanhui L. and Shaoyu T. will be receiving certificates of distinction for their performances in the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest. Mohammed Z. and Abdu Liah A. will be receiving certificates of distinction in the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest.

On February 20, students in grades 9, 10 and 11 will be writing the Pascal (Grade 9), Cayley( Grade 10) and Fermat (Grade 11) math contests. Students who are interested may sign up either at the math office or through their math teachers. The Euclid, Fryer (Grade 9), Galois ( Grade 10) and Hypatia ( Grade 11) Contests will be held in April. Students are reminded to listen to the announcements for registration dates.

We believe that all students can be successful in Mathematics. Students who are enrolled in the appropriate course level (academic, applied, essential, university, college, and workplace) are likely to be very successful. Course selection for the

next school year has begun and we do ask all students and parents to refer to the recommendation made by their child’s math teacher on their semester one report. Students who are currently enrolled in a math course in semester two should discuss his/her Math options for next year.

Students are encouraged to use online supports such as http://www.khanacademy.org/ in addition to classroom support (teacher), peer help ( Math Senior Scholar Program) to improve their performance in math. The Mathematics Senior Scholar Program is made possible by a group of our senior students who make themselves available to help students in grades 9 and 10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 239 between 11:15-11:50. Students are reminded not to wait until the day before an evaluation to get extra help. This should be done as soon as the need arises.

Adventures in Science (AIS) applications are now open! AIS is a community

outreach program organized and facilitated by the University of Toronto medical

students. Students participate in leadership, team, science and

research building workshops at University of Toronto – Mississauga campus on Saturdays (Feb 22, March 1, March 22, April 12 and April 26). Lunch in the university cafeteria is provided. The program gives the students an opportunity to explore careers in health and receive invaluable guidance regarding their education and career aspirations from university students. It culminates in an Adventures in Science day here at Clarkson on May 5th, where our students present interactive science experiments and demonstrations to our grade 6 feeder school students.

Grade 11 and 12 students can apply online by clicking "Apply here" on the AIS homepage. Make sure to select "Clarkson" for the right application package. The teacher recommendations and parental consent forms have to be handed in to Ms. Haddad by Friday, February 14th. Acceptance to AIS will be determined on Monday, February 17th.

CSI will resume this coming semester. CSI is a program run at lunch once a week for grade 9 and 10 science students to receive help in their science homework from senior science students. Listen to announcements for more details.

Social Sciences and Family Studies Department The Model UN club is ready for the 2013/14 season and students are looking forward to a number of model UN meetings.  Students will be taking an active part and developing their skills in public speaking, debating, networking, negotiating, and drafting working papers and resolutions. They will also able to gain valuable experience navigating the Toronto subway system during rush hour.  We have some very strong grade ten students and can look forward to a great team next year. BHM is fast approaching and Clarkson is excited to announce two assemblies: welcoming back Al St. Louis an exciting motivational speaker and spoken word poet and, for the first time, welcoming Truth Is Ellipsis, a recent winner of the Toronto poetry slam event and a terrific motivational educator. We are very excited to have them share their energy and excitement with the students and teachers during Clarkson's celebration of African Heritage. The 2014 Europe trip is fast approaching and students are very excited about visiting the WW1 and WW2 battle field sites and cemeteries in Holland, Belgium and France. Some other highlights of the trip include a visit to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, and a culminating visit to Versailles and the Louvre in Paris. As well, the 2015 trip has been approved and Madame Smiley from Social Sciences and Moderns will be getting registration started with the start of the second semester. Student Services DepartmentStudent Services

future plans; be it university, college, apprenticeship, work or a year off. For those students directly pursuing post-secondary education; program selection, required courses and cut-off marks were discussed. As well, students who had completed their mandatory forty hours of volunteer work and had handed in their forms, were patted on the back, while those who still had not completed their hours or had not yet handed in the paperwork, were politely told to get a MOVE ON!! Volunteer hours must be completed and handed in by May for students to graduate.

At this point in time, we have 126 students who have applied to university and 74 who have put their applications in to college. This process is always a time of trepidation as students wait to hear from the post-secondary institutions as to whether they have been accepted. The counselling department always stresses “patience is the key.” Some students will receive early acceptance but the majority of students will not receive confirmation of acceptance until early May; after the second semester mid-term marks have been processed .

Online Course Selections for September 2014

The start of the second semester is an important month for our non-graduating students as they will be choosing courses for next year. All students have created an account on www.MyBlueprint.ca, which is a fantastic online resource for students to explore and plan courses leading to future post-secondary pathways. Students will be attending Grade level presentations from February 4th – 7th to discuss possible course selections and the process of choosing courses via www.MyBlueprint.ca. This online course selection process will be enabled from February 4th to February 18th. Students are encouraged to choose courses appropriate to their level, interests

and realistic post-secondary aspirations. Parents/Guardians, please complete this course selection process along with your teen and print out the selected courses once you have finished. Please sign the print-out form and have your student return it to his/her homeroom teacher. Please feel free to contact your child’s guidance counsellor if you have any questions or concerns.

To help you and your teen with this process, the following supports are in place:

Grade assemblies will be held to discuss course selections and the online process.

Detailed instructions for the entire process are being distributed to students. PowerPoint presentations for course selection for each grade (Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12) are also posted on our school’s website.

Your child has created an account on www.MyBlueprint.ca, a board-wide program, that allows you to explore and plan course selection for future pathways and provide course descriptions.

Diploma status and credit history can be checked on www.MyBlueprint.ca to help in selecting necessary/appropriate courses.

Counsellors will be available for those students who are experiencing difficulty with the online process or course selection. Drop into Guidance between 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Reminders will be announced while the online registration is available.

atmosphere filled with the songs of the season and the spirit of generosity. All students in ESL courses gathered for a unique Christmas party just before the winter break. For some of them, this was the first time experiencing this event, far away from home, and having delicious sugar cookies or eggnog. Students had an opportunity to learn more about the Canadian culture and to share their experiences about their 1st semester at Clarkson. Similarly, all ESL students celebrated the Chinese New Year on January 31st by gathering for an afternoon of fun, bowling, golfing and music at “Park Royal Family Fun Centre” in Clarkson. Chinese students, for whom 2014 is the “Year of the horse”, enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together with friends and peers during this important celebration.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

Harneet S. recently earned her Silver Level Duke of Edinburgh Award. Her pin will be presented to her at the Principal’s

Reception on May 29. She will receive her certificate from the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario at a separate ceremony. Several more Duke of Ed. Club members’ applications are now being processed by the Ontario Duke of Edinburgh’s office. In January, all students still needing to complete their Adventurous Journeys should look at http://www.dukeofed.org/ns/2012-expedition-schedule for some exciting opportunities and register for programs before they are filled.

An Update from Student Council

Hello Chargers and families, In November, we had our very first Western Dance which was an enormous

success. We even had a professional coach to teach everyone square dancing! Students looked fabulous, dressed in cowboy and cowgirl attire. After hosting that wonderful dance, the Student Activity Council shopped until they dropped for presents for our annual Kidfest on December 10th, 2013. At Kidfest, we welcomed Grade One students from Willow Glen and Elmcrest to decorate cookies, sing Christmas carols, and sit on Santa’s lap as they received gifts. In December, we also brought our amazing holiday spirit to Clarkson where we had multiple theme days such as Pajama Day, Red and Green Day, Hat Day and Ugly Sweater Day. We also had festive lunchtime activities such as eggnog flip cup (where our Grade Nine champions defeated our senior boys!), karaoke, pictures with Santa, and pin the tail on the reindeer. On the last day of school, we held our famous holiday concert featuring our school band, led by Mr. Arthurs, as well as talented students at Clarkson, singing, dancing or playing an instrument. As usual, our exceptionally skilled and dedicated teachers performed a creative dance to “What Does the Fox Say?” After exams, the Student Activity Council is going to continue to work extremely hard to put together a Mardi-Gras themed semi-formal on February 25, 2014. We’ve had a fun-filled first semester and are looking forward to ensuring that our Chargers have an even better second semester!

Project Milk Bag

Thanks to all students and parents who are saving their milk bags. We have 394 to date. It takes 300 bags to make a mat which keeps underprivileged children in Haiti off mud floors and protects them from bugs and disease, so we are ready to start cutting them up for crocheting in Semester 2. Please continue to SAVE YOUR MILK

BAGS and send clean bags to Room 110: it’s so much more sensible than putting them in a landfill site where they can take up to 500 years to biodegrade. We can make a difference!

Ms. Mark’s Grade 9 English Class

Early on in Semester 1, students in ENG1D0-B (for Bodacious) decided to make loom bracelets to raise money for charity. Everyone pitched in to buy supplies, make the bracelets, and sell them. We ended up making $226.70 of which $150 was donated to The Creation of Hope Orphanage in Kenya (founded and funded by children’s author Eric Walters), and the remainder will go to Camp Oochigeas during the annual Clarkson Cancer Drive. Congratulations to these enterprising students, every one of whom is a future leader.

Me-to-We Knitters

A faithful group of knitters has continued to meet each Tuesday

throughout Semester 1.  We have focused on cowls

lately and may soon be moving on to make "arm scarves".  We will be selling these before

March Break, along with PED-Pets (personal electronic device

covers), yellow and gold charger bracelets and lariats, and

knitted cupcakes, to raise money for Camp Oochigeas.  Our multi-generational club is looking for community members who would like to knit (off-site) or to donate wool.  If you are interested, please contact Ms. Pedersen-Brown, Ms. McMillan, or Ms. Mark.

Hosting International Students

Hosting an international student can be a very rewarding experience. We are currently looking

for host families in the Clarkson area and offer a monthly stipend. If you’re interested, please visit our website at www.homestayselect.ca.

Peel public schools celebrate Education Week

Help your Child Prepare for TestsMany students will become anxious at the thought of writing a test. Anxiety about an upcoming test can affect a child's behaviour, thoughts and actions. Here are some ways you can help minimize anxiety at test time: Organize & Prepare:

Encourage your child not to leave assignments, studying and homework to the last minute.

Schedule time for review and work on assignments each day.

Establish a regular time of the day for homework, studying etc.

Make the home a homework-friendly environment where learning is regular routine.

Remove distractions like the television, stereo, telephone when studying.

Tell your child to make sure tests and due dates are marked in their agenda.

Practice: Encourage your child to think about

what, when, where and how when preparing/completing assignments.

Develop practice tests and help them anticipate questions.

Review previous exercises. When appropriate, encourage your

child to pair up with a friend to review information and brainstorm.

Build learning into family activities— suggest keeping a journal, writing a report or a news article about family events, outings or trips.

Be in the know: Check out the curriculum for your

child’s grade level (available as PDF files at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum)

Ask your child’s teacher about major topics studied and how these topics

Need help in math? Free tutoring now available online

Math students in grades 7 to 10 can access live, interactive online math help by visiting www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Homework Help is free, real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers.

Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. for individualized confidential math tutoring. There are discussion rooms for each grade where students can join and see what questions other students are asking, watch the tutors draw on the whiteboard – and ask their own question for on-the-spot help.

Students will also find 24/7 discussion rooms, video lessons and commonly asked questions. Other online math resources include math games and a virtual locker, where students can save their work.

Parent Monetary Donation: Please consider helping the school this year with a donation. Any amount is welcome and amounts over $25 will be issued a tax receipt from the school board. Please continue to support our school to help make a difference. Our donation form is attached.

Staff Appreciation Day May 6th: Once again this year, we are planning to show our appreciation to the Clarkson teachers and staff for all the great work and support by “treating” them to some fabulous food! Food donations will help make this event possible. If you are able to help, please send an email to Sylvie Vanroose at [email protected] or Anne-Marie May at [email protected] or 905.855.8905 who have graciously offered to coordinate this event for us. They will maintain a list of parents able and willing to help with donations of baked goods etc. Closer to the date, you will receive an email with the list of what we are looking for and drop off instructions. Thanks for your participation.

Meeting: On January 22nd, Sue McMillian, head of the Guidance Department, was nice enough to give her time to come to our council meeting and make a presentation on www.myBlueprint.ca, an online education planner currently being used by all Clarkson students. Some of the modules include the selection of courses, post-secondary programs and easy access to college/university information, setting of career goals and finance planning. Ask your son or daughter about this great tool and let them show you how it works. Thank you, Sue, for an informative presentation.

Our next meeting is April 18th.

Email Distribution List: Have you added your name to our email distribution list to receive our notices of meetings and information on any issues pertaining to the school? Please complete the tear out form at the bottom. You can be assured that it will be kept confidential and not distributed to any outside sources. Communications are kept to a minimum and have a frequency of no more than once every 6 weeks. Please print.

February 2014Clarkson Secondary School - School Council

Are you looking for a way to make a positive impact in your child’s secondary school? The school council is giving parents the opportunity to help by making a monetary donation to the school. Typically there are not many fundraising activities at the secondary level so please help where you can and make a difference in your child’s school.

You can direct your donations directly to the wish list item that you would like to help with. Please note that if insufficient funds are directed to a certain item, the school council may decide to re-direct where most needed to ensure the funds are used within the school year. The school has identified their top priorities for 2013-2014. CALL TO ACTION: Please consider helping where you can. Complete this donation form, by checking off the appropriate option below and attaching a cheque made payable to ‘Clarkson Secondary School’. All donations of more than $25.00 will receive a tax receipt from the Peel District School Board.
