has spring fever! Students have been working hard improving their language skills, and hard work has its

rewards.

Language fun and field trips

On February 14th, all language classes celebrated Clarkson's Language Day with culture, quizzes and competition! Yummy prizes were enjoyed by the savviest students and teachers! We look forward to having even more fun in our language classes in 2014-2015!

On April 11th, Cercle d'amis had a cultural food party with their fondue au chocolat. On April 23rd, select French Immersion and French Core students will have a food-filled day of fun as they enjoy authentic French cuisine at Le Papillon restaurant in Toronto, followed by a chasse au trésor in St. Lawrence Market. Bon appétit!

In May, grade 10 students studying Spanish will be making piñatas. ¡Qué divertido! The grade 12 class will be testing out their cooking skills by making authentic Hispanic cuisine with Señora Loutrianakis. Also in May, Cercle d'amis will test their culinary skills preparing French cuisine with Mme Smiley.

On May 16th, grade 9 students studying French will attend Clarkson’s very own Café Français. Students view a French film while enjoying hot and tasty crêpes made by their teachers. Délicieux!

Let’s not forget that little field trip to Europe between April 11th-22nd! Senior students (along with French teachers, Mme Gerulath and Mme Héneault) will have the opportunity of a lifetime to experience French and Belgian culture and practice their language skills during our eleven-day trip to the continent. La grande aventure nous attend!

What a wonderful season with a wonderful group of athletes. Science Department

Grade 10 science students travelled to Ripley's Aquarium on April 5th to explore our underwater world.  Teachers and

students learned all about our Canadian lake fish, as well as some exotic creatures found in our oceans.  They were mesmerized by the sting rays and sharks swimming right over their heads!  Listen up for the grade 11 aquarium trip coming up on May 9th!  Grade 11 chemistry students will attend the Riverwood Conservancy to conduct chemical tests on student-collected water and soil samples, as well as many other hands-on field study activities.  The grade 10 student’s wrapped up their chemistry unit with a summative lab that determined which antacid could best fight gas pains, but costs the least amount of money.  The grade 9 students are busily working on their space research projects.

The Model UN Club’s 2013/14 season is underway and students are looking forward to a number of Model UN meetings.  Students will be taking an active part and developing their skills in public speaking, debating, networking, negotiating, and drafting working papers and resolutions. They will also be able to gain valuable experience navigating the Toronto subway system during rush hour.  Looking to the future, the Model UN Club should see some growth as we inaugurate the Mock Trial team and combine the two. BHM has come and gone and Clarkson hosted two absolutely phenomenal speakers.  An amazing performance was presented by poet, Truth Is, sharing her poetry with our students in a very personal and emotional way. She was accompanied by her good friend and Guelph Slam Poetry team member, Fannon Holland, who blew the roof off with his passion and his humour. Al St. Louis, an exciting motivational speaker and spoken word poet, was back for a second visit and inspired and motivated the students with his wise words of wisdom! As you read this, students will have just returned from Clarkson’s second and very successful trip to Europe. Students visited the WW1 and WW2 battle field sites and cemeteries in Holland, Belgium and France, toured the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam as well as the Louvre in Paris and spent a day at Versailles. Furthermore, the 2015 trip has been approved and Madame Smiley from Social Sciences and Moderns will be completing registration at the end of April, early May.

Clarkson Family Studies students have had a busy semester so far! We have been involved in launching a new Cafeteria Revolution with a “Guess What’s in the Smoothie” contest in the cafeteria. Students were able to taste healthy smoothies (made with our newly purchased

Vita Mix blender!) and three prizes were awarded to students who had guessed correctly. Students enjoyed these tasty treats so much that they will be making a second appearance during this year’s Cancer Drive—this time with new recipes submitted by our students. Speaking of Cancer Drive, Family Studies will be partaking in various activities throughout that week to help support Camp Ooch. Do it for the kids!

In addition to these fun-filled activities, we will be taking our students on a “Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy Eating” field trip. Our students will take a community walk to our local supermarket and learn about the availability of local food, as well as how to actually “shop sensibly” with budget, health and local farmers in mind. We look forward to the rest of the year!

Student Services DepartmentSummer school applications are now being accepted in the Guidance Office. Those students who failed a course in first semester, need to upgrade a mark, or those students who are struggling presently in a semester 2 compulsory course should enrol in summer school courses. Spots fill very quickly so come down to the guidance office before the end of April to find out summer school locations and courses being offered both at the Peel District and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board and get your applications returned promptly.

Many Grade 12 students who are going off to university or college have started to receive conditional acceptances from post-

secondary institutions. Conditional is an important word!!! Students must maintain the average requested by the university or college in their offer letter. A

majority of Grade 12 students, however, will not hear from universities or colleges until their second semester mid-term marks have been received.... please remain patient and optimistic!! Also, please pay special attention to important dates for acknowledging acceptances, confirming residence and initial payments.

An important note to remember is that Grade 12 students must have their 40 community hours completed and handed in prior to May 31st or they will not be considered graduates!!

Thanks to Gavin May and Katie Thompson for taking the time to visit Hillside P.S. These students have been working with Ms. Maika and our feeder school to help grade 8 students learn how to use the Premier Assistive Technology Reading Program.

International Program The Peel International Academy welcomed a new group of students from overseas, in February . We celebrated Chinese New Year at the start of the semester and are now busy planning Multifest, our multicultural celebration in May. Congratulations to the 30% who made the Honour Roll in Semester One and the very high Math marks achieved by many in the program.

An Update from theStudent Activity CouncilHello Chargers,

It’s that time of year again! As Clarkson prepares for our annual Cancer Drive, everybody is busy organizing events, saving money and getting into the spirit to help send children with cancer to Camp Ooch. As we reflect on our recent activities the Student Activity Council has hosted, there was a spirit week for March Madness that included PJ day, twin day and hippie

day. We are very excited about a new project we are working on to encourage student-use of our cafeteria during lunch. We are hosting various activities each month that promote healthy food being sold in the cafeteria. We recently had a “Smoothie Taste Test Day” where students tried to guess the ingredients of the delicious and nutritious smoothies. Congratulations to our three winners who were selected in the draw; they received I-Tunes/Cineplex gift cards as a prize. You could too, Chargers - there will be many more prizes to win each month! Things to look forward to are Cancer Drive in April, including SAC’s famous and delicious BBQ, as well as, Spring Fling in May! Enjoy your spring, Chargers!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

Clarkson's Duke of Edinburgh Club congratulates recent Gold Award winner Maya Tomkiewicz. She will receive her pin at the

June Commencement, along with Hannah Pham. These students will receive their certificates from a member of the royal family at a date to be announced. We also congratulate recent Silver Award winner Dylan Matthews and three Bronze Award winners: Margaret Pham, Josh Mott and Victor Stec. Allison Drake and Emily Tadgell have submitted their applications to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Office for evaluation and we look forward to hearing the results. All Duke of Edinburgh Club members are reminded to book an Adventurous Journey (or arrange to do one with your family) before spaces are booked. Congratulations to Brianne Laverty and Zach Knight who were selected as February Students of the Month for citizenship both in the school and in the wider community. Following their participation in a leadership conference last June, these two senior students were inspired to devise a plan and prepare publicity material to solicit interest by Clarkson students and staff in Project Milk Bag. This Project involves collecting milk bags, then cutting and tying them into strips that can be crocheted into sleeping mats for underprivileged children in Haiti. We all agree that this is a much better use for milk bags than putting them in the garbage where they can take up to 500 years to biodegrade! At first the milk bag trickled slowly into Room 110, but in the last few months there has been a steady "flow" thanks to students, parents and staff. It takes 300 bags to make a mat which keeps underprivileged children in Haiti off mud floors and protects them from bugs and disease. Please continue to SAVE YOUR MILK BAGS and send clean bags to Room 110. We can make a difference!

Me-to-We Knitters A faithful group of knitters

has continued to meet each Tuesday since the beginning of the semester. We are hoping to sell our stash of knitted items (cowls, PED-Pets—

personal electronic device covers—yellow and gold

Charger bracelets and lariats, and knitted cupcakes) to raise money for Camp Ooch. Currently, we are also considering new directions in fibre arts creations, including crocheted coffee cup holders and embroidered t-towels. Our multi-generational club is always looking for community members who would like to knit (off-site) or to donate wool.  If you are

interested, please contact Ms. Pedersen-Brown or Ms. Mark.

Multi-Cultural ClubClarkson’s Multicultural Club has been formed to bring cultural awareness and develop appreciation of diversity at our school. Club members organize cultural events inside the school involving parents, community members and community organizations. Our Multicultural Club is for anyone who would like to get to know students from other cultures and share information about their own culture, traditions and foods. Our club engages in a variety of activities to promote talents of our diverse school population. This year, our Multicultural pot luck dinner is being held on Friday, May 23rd. Like every year, we are inviting school families and community organizations to come and celebrate the evening with us. The show is all about having as many diverse acts as we can and represent as many cultures as possible. The evening will proudly showcase a variety of talent from our local and international students. The tickets go on sale on Friday, May 11.

Peel Public Schools Celebrate Education Week

Peel public schools will host hundreds of special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2014, from April 14 to 25. The theme for this year's two week-long focus on education is "We inspire." Each year, more than 50,000 parents and community members across Peel attend activities and events during Education Week. We are looking forward to an equally successful week this year.

Help your Child Prepare for TestsMany students will become anxious at the thought of writing a test. Anxiety about an upcoming test can affect a child's behaviour, thoughts and actions. Here are some ways you can help minimize anxiety at test time: Organize & Prepare:

Encourage your child not to leave assignments, studying and homework to the last minute.

Schedule time for review and work on assignments each day.

Establish a regular time of the day for homework, studying etc.

Make the home a homework-friendly environment where learning is regular routine.

Remove distractions like the television, stereo, telephone when studying.

Tell your child to make sure tests and due dates are marked in their agenda.

Practice: Encourage your child to think about

what, when, where and how when preparing/completing assignments.

Develop practice tests and help them anticipate questions.

Review previous exercises. When appropriate, encourage your

child to pair up with a friend to review information and brainstorm.

Build learning into family activities— suggest keeping a journal, writing a report or a news article about family events, outings or trips.

Be in the know: Check out the curriculum for your

child’s grade level (available as PDF files at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum)

Ask your child’s teacher about major topics studied and how these topics

Once again, the most exciting time of the year at Clarkson is just about here: Clarkson's Annual Cancer Drive! The Cancer Drive Executive Team

has been working hard over the last few months to plan another exciting week of fun-filled activities, to raise as much money as possible for Camp Oochigeas, a magical place for kids affected by childhood cancer.

This year, our official kick-off assembly will be held on Thursday, April 24! We will be joined that day by a special guest from Camp Oochigeas and there will be lots of surprises in store! We'll be unveiling our new Cancer Drive logo, beautifully created by one of our students, Neil Maguire. T-shirts and tank tops with the new logo will also be going on sale. At the kick-off assembly, this year's special buyout will be revealed and, at lunch, tickets will go on sale for the buyout  on Tuesday, April 29.

Parents/Guardians, on Thursday, April 24, during Parents’ Night and on Friday, April 25, we will be having a silent auction with all proceeds going to Ooch. Please feel free to bid on these items while you are here on Parents' Night. If you or someone you know owns a business or has connections to get any items that we could use for that silent auction, please drop them off at our school before Thursday, April 24. The calendar for the week's activities will

be posted on the school website. You are encouraged to drop by our school anytime during that week to see Cancer Drive in action: you really won't believe how incredible this event is until you've witnessed it!

The week wraps up with a huge assembly on Friday afternoon, May 2. At that assembly, we will be waxing boys’ legs, cutting ponytails of  both genders for donation to  Angel's Wish, shaving heads and pieing a  teacher or two and all of this is for the kids at Camp Ooch!Parents, in addition to supporting your child’s homeroom activities (perhaps, they may transform your kitchen into a disaster zone or raid your purses and wallets), there are a few other ways you can support this amazing and inspiring effort:

Consider making a donation of $25.00 or more by cheque made out to Camp Oochigeas, and we’ll ensure you get an income tax receipt.

Make a donation of a new or gently used item to our silent auction which will take place on Parents’ Night, Thursday, April 24. If you or someone you know, runs a business and would be willing to donate a gift certificate or other item to auction off, we would be most

The week after Cancer Drive ends at Clarkson, we will appropriately move into Mental Health Awareness Week. This is the third year we are running this event at Clarkson, and this year it corresponds with National Mental Health Week. Our theme this year is Be kind to yourself and others.

There will be a variety of activities taking place during that week,  all focusing on achieving and maintaining positive mental health.  We will be selling a variety of buttons encouraging us to be kind to ourselves and others.

The week will begin with homeroom class activities and discussions about what it means to be mentally healthy and the ways in which we can maintain our mental wellness.

On Tuesday, May 6, there will be a cross-panel discussion with various members of the school community sharing their personal experiences with mental health and mental wellness. This will take place in the Theatre at lunchtime.

On Wednesday, May 7, there will be Random Acts of Kindness, and we will also have a therapy dog. Drop by to see him in the Guidance Department.

On Thursday, May 8, various homeroom classes will be participating in activities that encourage mental wellness, including: yoga, Zumba, meditation, walking, reading, art, etc.

All week, we will have a Wall of Acknowledgment in the front foyer celebrating all the wonderful people in each of our lives: what we appreciate about them and what they bring to our lives.

While mental wellness has been a very important focus at Clarkson for a number of years, thankfully, it is now  a Peel District School Board and province-wide initiative.

Neigbourhood police officers inspire students during regular school visits

From time to time, you may see a police car parked outside our school or police officers walking through our hallways. You may wonder why they are there and feel uncertain or intimidated, but do not be alarmed.

Our Neighbourhood Police Officers (NPOs) help to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff during regular school visits. Through a positive partnership with our school, our NPOs:

act as a police liaison officer between school officials and our local police service

investigate incidents and conduct follow-ups at schools help to organize community events, e.g. charity sport events held at

the school deliver presentations on topics including: fraud, drugs, gangs, cyber-

bullying and personal safety implement Problem Orienting Policing (POP) projects that are aimed

at identifying and resolving problems within a school and community that interfere with the safe school learning environment

Our NPOs play an important part in, not only ensuring the safety of our staff and students, but also in fostering meaningful partnerships between parents, staff, students and the wider community.

Peel board receives donation of 250 defibrillators to place in all schools, worksites Thanks to a gracious donation from The Mikey Network, all Peel board schools and worksites will soon be equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)—a medical device used to treat individuals experiencing cardiac arrest.  The initiative began in January 2014 and is expected to be completed by December 2016. Approximately seven defibrillators will be placed in Peel board buildings each month, for a total of 250 new defibrillators.
