What do we “do” each day…
EAGLE Time: Students will receive either remediation or enrichment instruction in literacy.
Math: We will continue using the Everyday Math program with the students. Students will typically have math homework every day.
Content: Students may read Social Studies and Science information. We may do science experiments/inquiry. We will further our studies in Social Studies and Science.
Language & Word Study: Students practice word families/skills while applying the skills within grade level text. This often includes interactive read-alouds and shared, whole class reading.
Reader’s Workshop: This has been called “Guided Reading” in the past. Teachers meet with students in small groups to work on literacy skills. Students complete Daily 5 activities when they are not working in a small group with the teacher.
Writer’s Workshop: Students participate in mini-lessons and practice writing using the writing process steps: prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and publish.
Specials: Students will rotate through a 4-day specials rotation: Art, Music, PE, and Technology.
Homework Policy
Daily Folder Students will have a Green
“Go Home” folder that they are responsible for carrying to and from school every day. Students will use this folder to bring home homework assignments and other important papers.
Language Arts/Reading/Spelling Homework
Generally, this homework packet will come home on Monday and will need to be completed and returned by Friday. There will be activities to practice spelling and reading on a daily basis. There will also usually be one additional Language Arts assignment.
Math HomeworkWe will start math homework
(Math Home Links) after the start of the first week. Math homework will come home approximately 3 to 4 nights a week. This homework should be completed the same day it is sent home and returned the next day. This will allow us to review the work together in class the next day.
The Math Home Link assignments will not take very much time to complete, but most of them will involve interaction with an adult or an older child. Home Links are designed to reinforce newly learned skills and concepts.
Important InformationLunch Money
Payment can be made online or sent in with students either in check or cash form. Checks should include your child’s name and lunch account number. Please place cash payments in an envelope – please write your child’s name, lunch account number, teacher’s name and the money amount on the outside of the envelope.
Change in End of Day RoutinePlease send a note if there is a
change to your child’s routine at dismissal time (for example – going home with a friend, change in daycare, staying for a club or group meeting). We cannot let your child do something different without a note, email or phone call. If your plans change during the school day, please call the office. Despite our best efforts, we do not always have a chance to check email or voicemail before the end of the day.
BirthdaysStudent birthdays will not be
celebrated with food items. Teachers may choose to celebrate birthdays with non-food items or student recognition. This policy is in support of the Noblesville Schools Wellness Policy that supports community efforts to increase physical activity and wellness of students.
Behavior
At White River Elementary, we want students to “SOAR” with good behavior. SOAR means:

Students will be expected to “SOAR” in all areas of the school day. This year we are focusing on a proactive approach with behavior. We will continue to reteach appropriate behavior. Students will be acknowledged and rewarded for followng the SOAR expectations.
Our daily goal, as a class, will be to spell “SOAR.” The class will earn a letter for each subject area if they are following the expecatations. Classes will be rewarded for spelling SOAR at the end of the day in many different ways (SOAR tickets, extra recess, free choice Daily 5 stations, sit by a friend, etc.).
It is our hope that by consitently reviewing the SOAR expectations and rewarding students for GOOD actions, that behavior problems will be minimal.
Unlike in the past, students will not have a clip to move up/down. They will not end the day on a “color.” If your child consistently struggles with SOAR procedures we will let you know. ;)
Please help support the “SOAR” process and discuss these expectations at home with your child.
