Comparing two images
I have chosen to compare these two images by Camile Silvy and Joe Deal. Camile Silvy’s image (on the left) presents its self as; a sublime, picturesque and picture-perfect postcard image. Silvy’s picture is a typical example of a picture tourists would buy to show their family and friends how ‘perfect’ their holiday was. As Frank Gohile said “the world you would like to see compared with the one you actually live in” this quotation is relevant to Silvy’s image because, we are exhibited an image that includes a perfectly clear river running throughout the image, the river is reflecting the sublime natural features of the landscape. This image is considered an escape from everyday life; therefore, this is the image a tourist would show to their family and friends because it’s an idyllic setting that is a refreshing change from everyday life. In total comparison to this Joe Deal’s image (on the right) completely juxtaposes Silvy’s picturesque image. Deal’s image turns a landscape into something to fear. The huge hole in the earth could perhaps be a metaphor for how humanity is literally destroying and damaging the earth. Deals image could even be considered to be topographical image, giving the audience detailed information about how the human race is changing the earth. Joe Deal’s photograph goes against David Bate’s quote “the landscape was a calculated response to industrialisation” by showing the effects of industrialisation in a landscape Image.
