and that is where the second level of hospitality and the challenge of growth come. Are we ready to acknowledge the gifts and experiences of others? Are we willing to listen

A MESSAGE FROM FR. BARRETT

The Lord be with you!

About three years ago I shared with you that we were at a crossroads. The days of “adopt a bill” were behind us. We could either coast along on our new prosperity or accept a challenge to grow even more. Jesus told his disciples in Mt. “to those whom much has been given, much is expected.” I am overjoyed that the congregation moved forward with dynamic hope into the future. We started a food pantry and are now embarked on a building campaign.

With growth comes another challenge. We have added 65 new members in less than three years. That means that 37% of the congregation was not here at the end of 2014. In one way the congregation has always been very welcoming to visitors. I give you credit for our growth, because the current members are the best evangelists. No matter how great the music or the sermon, visitors will not stay and join when they are not welcomed. Lyle Shallert says that visitors make their decision to join a new church within the first few minutes based on the warmth of their welcome. The congregations exceeds in this measure of hospitality.

However, much like a first date, we are on our best behavior when visitors arrive. We seem them as prospects! There is another kind of reception. You might call it the second level. Most of our new members want to be involved in our ministries, and

and welcome their ideas? The lament “no one wants to help” is heard in many congregations. However, are new hands and faces greeted with an attitude of “we have always done it this way,” or the implication that “there is only one right way and it is my way.”

In the Gospel according to Jn., Jesus stops by a well in Samaria to rest. He meets a woman from the town. One is a visitor and the other is a resident, but they are both outsiders. Jesus is a Jew in Samaria. The woman, with questionable morals, comes to the well in the heat of the afternoon. She has been hurt too many times by the other women who get their water in the cool of the day. The two strangers form a bond. Growth is a wonderful thing. Welcoming visitors is the first step, but to truly bond, we must also be proficient at second level reception. It is one thing to welcome the stranger. That is basic hospitality. It’s a greater challenge to accept the stranger and the stranger’s gifts.

Peace be with you,Father Bill

I trust everyone had good time at the church picnic on Mother’s Day.  The baskets were a huge success.  The ladies worked hard on these and we were able to make $287.00 for the building fund.  ECW will meet once more in June to start planning next year's calendar.

I hope you all enjoy a happy and healthy summer and look for ECW to start up again in September.

Here it is June and the beginning of another warm summer. If you can crochet, knit, or sew, please consider helping us. While you are enjoying the cool air conditioning inside, perhaps you might make a hat or two (or maybe even some mittens) for needy children of Sunrise Elementary School. The items are delivered in early October—just in time for the start of cold weather.

Easy crochet or knit patterns for hats and mittens and a sewing pattern for fleece hats are available.

Also, please consider donating acrylic, worsted weight yarn in child friendly colors. Even small balls of leftover yarn can be used for stripes or pom-poms.

If you are interested in using your time and talent making hats and mittens or would like more information, please contact me at (352) 873-7729.

Thank you,Karin Roberts
