GOVT ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE CALICUT DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2018-19 1. Plant of the week display : Our 5 th semester students displayed one plant a week highlighting its morphological or taxonomical features. 2. Cacti collection : We started collection of cacti plants & planted them in pots. Labels are placed on the pots so that students can identify & study the xerophytic modifications. Collections include rare & beautiful cacti like ‘Opuntia microdasys’ rufida & alba variety, Echinocactus, Mammillaria etc. 3. Hydrophytes collection : Glass plant containers were made and planted common and rare hydrophytes. Labels were placed on each container. Beautiful hydrophyte collection attracts students & generates curiosity. Our hydrophyte collection include free floating ones like Azolla, Lemna, Salvinia, Eichhorniaetc., submerged floating ones like Hydrilla, Utricularia, Elodea etc., rooted submerged like Vallisneria, emergent hydrophytes like Myriophyllum, Marsileaand plants like Nymphaea. 4. Vertical Garden : We constructed a vertical garden and made green wall. 5. PTA meeting : PTA meetings were called for all the three classes of B.Sc. Course. 6. Visit to Malabar Botanical Garden, Ollavanna : We conducted a garden visit for our V semester B. Sc. Students accompanied by our faculties. 7. Teacher’s day celebrations : Our students conducted a teacher’s day celebration and they gifted us a sapling of Garciniamangostana(Mangostene). 8. Power point presentation by students : From the month of August onwards our selected students made power point presentations on curious topics like ‘Bleeding tooth fungus’ by Keerthana T. N. (III semester B.Sc.), on ‘Watermelon snow’ by AmruthaN. (Isemester B.Sc.), on ‘World of Orchids’ by Divya (V semester B.Sc.) on ‘Gympie Plant Dendrocnidemoroides’ by Diswatha P (IV semester) and on ‘Rainbow Eucalyptus’ by Ashwani R K (VI semester). 9. ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2018-19

1. Plant of the week display : Our 5th semester students displayed one plant a week highlighting its morphological or taxonomical features.

2. Cacti collection : We started collection of cacti plants & planted them in pots. Labels are placed on the pots so that students can identify & study the xerophytic modifications. 9. National seminar sponsored by DCE :Two day national seminar was organized by the Department on 26&27 September 2018 on the topic “Environment and Food safety: Impact of Human interventions”. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr.V. S. Ramachandran, Professor(Retd), Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore. Dr S. Jayasree, Principal of our College presided over the function. He donated a copy of his book “Ferns and Fern allies of the Nilgiris, Tamilnadu” to our department.Dr C. A. Jayaprakas, Principal Scientist & Head, Crop protection division, CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram handled two sessions “Impact of synthetic pesticides on man and environment” and “Scope of green pesticide from Cassava. On 27 th

Senior geologist T. Mohanan conducted a class on ‘Natural Calamities’, Drissia T.K. Senior scientist dealt with the topic ‘Flooding-the need for preparedness” and Aleyamma P. K., Asst. Commissioner of food safety Kozhikode shared her views on ‘Food safety act: the present scenario of food safety’.

10. Botany Association Inauguration : On 22nd November 2018 Botany Association was inaugurated by Dr. S Sheela, Principal, Sree Neelakanda Govt. Sanskrit College Pattambi, Palakkad. HOD Botany welcomed the audience, Dr. Sinitha felicitated the function and Association Secretary Somjith P.K. delivered vote of thanks.

11.Study Tour: Department of Botany conducted a study tour for fifth semester B. Sc. Botany students on 4th, 5th,6th&7th of December 2018 as part of curriculum. Chickmagalore and Hampi,Karnatakawere our major destinations. We visited Central Coffee Research Institute,Koppa,Karnataka.

12. Christmas Celebration: Department of Botany celebrated Christmas Eve 2018. Students were dressed up in white and red. Our students made a beautiful Christmas crib as part of a competition conducted by college union. Cake cutting was also a part of celebration.

13. Alumni Meet- 2019: Alumni meet of Botany department 2019 was held at Room No SF 18 on 26-01-2019. Meeting started by 10am. Dr Sinitha K., Asst Prof. welcomed the gathering. Mementoes were presented to the achievers Athira C. K. (UGC-NET), Jiji P. V. (UGC-NET), Sruthi P. (UGC-NET), NithyaBasith (CSIR-JRF), AnjuChalari (CSIR-JRF), Sarika C. (UGC-JRF). Senior alumnae Sushil Kumar (1984-87 batch) addressed the gathering. Dr Swapna K. S. and Dr JayasreeS. felicitated the achievers.

14. Wetlands Day Celebration: As per the guidelines of KSCSTE, Trivandrum, Botany Department of Govt. Arts and Science College, Kozhikode has observed World Wetland Day by conducting the following programmes.

1. Kadalundi Community Reserve Visit on 02-02-20192. One day Seminar on the topic ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’ on 05-02-2019.3. Poster Making Competition

The field trip was on 02.02.2019. A team of 30 students and 4 faculty members visited Kadalundi community reserve. Mr Chandrasekharan, guide gave us a detailed description on the importance of Kadalundi wetlands, mangrove diversity and migratory birds of Kadalundi. He also mentioned how the climate change has affected the diversity of mangroves and migratory birds visiting Kadalundi. The field trip created awareness among the students on the need of conserving these wetlands.

One day seminar on the topic ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’ was held on 05.02.2019. The registration for the seminar started at 9.30 am followed by inaugural session. The session started by the welcome address by Dr. K. S. Swapna, Head of the Department. Prof. P. K. Rajasekharan, Principal in charge inaugurated the seminar. Dr. U. K. A. Saleem, Head, Dept of Zoology, felicitated the seminar. In his speech he mentioned the importance of wetlands and the need for conserving it and he also reminded that action is what really matters. Dr. K. Sinitha, Co-ordinator, presented vote of thanks.

The first academic session commenced at 10.30 am. Dr. (Fr.) Jose John, Assistant Professor, Dept of Botany, SH College, Thevara, Cochin delivered a talk on ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’. He gave an elaborate idea regarding the biodiversity of wetlands, especially the lower plant groups, which is a less explored area and how the climate change and human intervention is going to adversely affect the biodiversity. The talk was followed by an interactive session. All the participants actively involved in the discussions.

The second academic session started at 11.30 am. Dr. S. Suresh Kumar, Director, School of Ocean studies, KUFOS, Cochin presented the topic ‘Wetland Conservation’. He elaborated the conservation strategies and motivated the students to actively involve in conservation movements. The session was followed by a discussion.

Poster making competition on the topic ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’ started at 1.30 pm. Students of various departments participated in the competition. Posters were

evaluated by Dr. Jose John and Dr. S. Suresh Kumar. Ganga K. R. of department of Zoology bagged the first prize. Second prize was shared by Ashwani R. K. of Botany department and KiranRemesh of English department. Third prize was secured by MuhammedShahabas of Zoology department. Posters were displayed in the college. Prize distribution was held 4pm. The seminar came to an end at 4.30pm and the student representative proposed vote of thanks.

15. Visit to CWRDM: Ten students each from II yr and III yr BSc Botany attended a one day seminar on 06.02.2019 at CWRDM, Kozhikode.
