Songs of Summer. Psalms of Summer.August 2: Psalm 27:1-8, 13-14; August 9: Psalm 40: 1-3, 9-10, 16-17; August 16: The 151st Psalm

Read the Psalm for the week before worship. Read the whole Psalm. I’ll provide a few different translations each week.Homework: As you meditate on the Psalm of the week, would you:Take some time to write it in your own words? Use the selected verses rather than the whole Psalm if it is long. Write a prayer based on what you’ve written?

Notice August 16th: Psalm 151. There is none in our scripture. I wrote one in celebration of a church musician many years ago. There are songs by that name.

Will you try your hand and write a Psalm of your own and call it Psalm 151? Then write a prayer based on it? I will, as I won’t ask you to do what I won’t. Share yours with me and I’ll include it in the August 16 worship packet.

I hope you’ll participate with me. It’s hot. The virus is still with us. And there are blessings all around us, glimpses of the goodness of God! The Psalms provide a balm for us during this season, giving voice to our deepest longings and concerns. They fortify us. Nurture us. Take some time with them. Laurie Palmer

Psalm 27:1-9a. 13-14New English Version 1The LORD is my light and my salvation. I fear no one. The LORD protects my life. I am afraid of no one. 2 When evil people attack me to devour my flesh, when my adversaries and enemies attack me, they stumble and fall. 3 Even when an army is deployed against me, I do not fear. Even when war is imminent, I remain confident. 4 I have asked the LORD for one thing—this is what I desire!I want to live in the LORD’s house all the days of my life,so I can gaze at the splendor of the LORD and contemplate in God’s temple.5 God will surely give me shelter in the day of danger; God will hide me in His home. God will place me on an inaccessible rocky summit. 6 Now I will triumph over my enemies who surround me. I will offer sacrifices in God’s dwelling place and shout for joy. I will sing praises to the LORD.7 Hear me, O LORD, when I cry out. Have mercy on me and answer me.8 My heart tells me to pray to you, and I do pray to you, O LORD. 9 Do not reject me

13Where would I be if I did not believe I would experience the LORD’s favor in the land of the living? 14 Rely on the LORD! Be strong and confident! Rely on the LORD!

New Revised Standard Version The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?2 When evildoers assail me  to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes—  they shall stumble and fall.3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.4 One thing I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after:to live in the house of the LORD  all the days of my life,to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.5 For God will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble;God will conceal me under the cover of His tent; God  will set me high on a rock. 6 Now my head is lifted up  above my enemies all around me,and I will offer in His tent  sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!8 “Come,” my heart says, “seek the face of God!”  Your face, LORD, do I seek. 9 Do not hide Your face from me. I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

The Message, a transliteration by Eugene PetersenLight, space, zest—that’s GOD!So, with God on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.2

When vandal hordes ride down ready to eat me alive,Those bullies and toughs fall flat on their faces.3 When besieged, I’m calm as a baby. When all hell breaks loose, I’m collected and cool.4 I’m asking GOD for one thing, only one thing:To live with the Lord in His house my whole life long.I’ll contemplate God’s beauty; I’ll study at His feet.5 That’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world,The perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic.6 God holds me head and shoulders above all who try to pull me down.I’m headed for God’s place to offer anthems that will raise the roof!Already I’m singing God-songs; I’m making music to GOD.7-9 Listen, GOD, I’m calling at the top of my lungs: “Be good to me! Answer me!”You’ve always been right there for me; don’t turn Your back on me now. When my heart whispered, “Seek God,” my whole being replied, “I am seeking God!”13I’m sure now I’ll see God’s goodness in the exuberant earth.14Stay with GOD! Take heart. Don’t quit.I’ll say it again: Stay with GOD.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
