Expository Essay- Science Fair Project.(One page essay)

Students are expected to explain the process of a Science Fair Project,

as published in Teaching ESOL Through Science Fair Experiments, by Judie Haynes.

Structure Expository Essay, published on student’s weblog (including all prewriting).

Procedure Students log on to class weblog/ formative page and download the following files: EXPOSITORY SCIENCE FORMATIVE SCIENCE PROJECT

The EXPOSITORY SCIENCE FORMATIVE file should be immediately published onto the student’s weblog.

The above files contain all the information needed to complete this exercise.

Students’ production

By Wednesday 8 th December, 2010 , students will have completed their work.

Students are required to publish updates of their file, progressively.

Teacher will then comment on individual student’s 9. PUBLISHED WORK- ORIGINAL and email it to them for pasting to the final page of their file;11.PUBLISHED WORK - TEACHER’S COMMENTS

Objectives

Students will display knowledge of the elements of an Expository Essay by explaining the process, in logical order, for a science fair experiment.

ORIGINAL DRAFTEgg in the bottle

Do you know (the) air pressure? Do you think the egg can pass the neck of the bottle and pop into the bottle? I think your answer must be ‘NO !’ but don’t I’m going to explain you the process of this experiment from the first step to last step and at last, you will know the conclusion of this experiment. You will know that the egg will pop into the bottle or not.

All process that I’ve shown you is called as ‘Scientific method’. Doing the experiment is the way that gives you the knowledge. Like that I did. All process above made me know about air pressure. Everybody can do scientific method also but maybe do in others topic. Doing the experiments should start with select the topic. Next, make hypothesis and preparing materials. Then do it from first step to last step, after doing that we will know

the conclusion of the experiment and think about variable and then present the result of the experiment by the chart, table or photograph

Firstly, we have to select the topic. Thinking which experiments we want to do, which is the most interested. In this case, I selected this experiment ‘Egg in the bottle’. I want to know how can egg pop in the bottle because it’s bigger than the bottle’s neck.

Secondly, making (make up the) hypothesis, it’s the result that we think it will be. It can be true or false but it doesn’t matter. In this experiment, I think that air pressure will make the egg fit through the neck of a bottle.

After that, we have to prepare the materials that we need in this experiment. Should prepare it carefully and completely. This experiment needs hard-boiled egg, a glass bottle, piece of paper and matches.

When you finish preparing the materials, it’s time for doing the experiment. You should be careful and do it step by step. Boil the egg and take the shell off. Then light the piece of paper and drop it into the bottle. After that, put the egg on the bottle’s neck and see what happen.

Then, we should think about the variable. Variable is also important in the experiment. The variable is air pressure. The fire makes air molecules expand and that made the pressure pull egg into the bottle.

After we have done the experiment, the result of the experiment can answer the hypothesis. I observe(d) that the egg can pop into the bottle by air pressure.

Now, the next step is present the experiment. We can present by many ways that’s easy to understand such as present by chart and table or we can use the photograph that we take while we doing this experiment.

We concluded that the fire makes the air molecules move further apart and expand. The pressure pulls the egg into the bottle.
