3. What level / career stage of trainee do you support?

Postgraduate scientist trainees include clinical scientist pre-reg, HSST, any bursary supported postgraduate or individuals who have acquired from NES a national training number as part of the postgraduate scientist cohort. Graduate-level / Practitioner trainees include preregistration clinical technologists, clinical physiology trainees, diploma-level decontamination trainees, or individuals who have acquired from NES a national training number as part of the practitioner cohort.

24. The Last Word! Please add any further comments about this survey or your experience and ideas for improvement

NHS Education for Scotland role is vital for ensuring the highest quality of training for healthcare scientists and supporting the necessary programmes. Funding of the different training programmes is also vital and if the lack of appropriate funding is not addressed then this will ultimately impact negatively on patient care.Information on the healthcare scientist training programme tends to get filtered through various layers before reaching the folk "on the ground". The result is significant gaps in information. I do my best to keep up with the current system and ensure that we comply with requirements and best practice, but it's difficult to get definitive information specific to my area of practice (medical physics, in my case). Perhaps it would be worth having specialist groups at a national level in Scotland to determine and *communicate* exactly how the HCS training is implemented within their specialty. I know there has been a great deal of work going on in each specialty, but I don't think the outcome of this work has been effectively shared with those who have not been at the centre of the activity.

Like in most other areas the goal posts seem to constantly be moving! Certainly keeps things interesting but consistency may suffer

There is an increasing shortage of technologists in Medical Physics; there should be a national scheme to recruit and train new technologists adopting the same process as the Clinical Scientist training scheme.I've not provided an answer to the question in the survey, regarding is the supervisor a major determinant in the success of a trainee as I struggled to choose between the first or second answer options. I think both of these options are equally important to trainee success. The supervisor is key to motivating and mentoring. Trainees also need to be self-motivated.

NA

Although the NES train the trainer course has good feedback I feel something more formal would be beneficial for staff who are given a trainers/ supervisors role. We are working very hard to establish a training program for all staff levels for respiratory physiology in Greater Glasgow and Clyde however are having problems finding a formal part-time training qualification for staff who are excellent at delivering training but do not have anything formal to verify their expertise.I believe that for the majority of groups the elements put in place by NES are a positive step forward, however this needs to be backed up by support for training courses within Scotland especially for hard to recruit groups and smaller groups that cannot support training due to small numbers.

We are well out of STP!

The different trainees that we come across can be very confusing and time consuming when you are needing to make several different training plans. We currently have one STP, 2 ACS route 2 trainees and a registrar and it is very hard to coordinate. I don't know if/how NES could help this but more guidance on the level of evidence needed for each would be helpful as the learning outcomes on the different websites can be quite vague.NES and AHCS have become key and vital components to the recruitment and training of cardiac physiologists but I wish myself and my team leads had more protected time to future proof our services by employing superlunary trainees at the appropriate level.Although I still supervise some post graduates undertaking MSc, most of the training supervision is carried out by other managers in the department due to changes in job roles.Excellent experience interacting with and supervising a trainee.Would like to be involved further
