How to Use this GuideCONNECT W/YOUR KIDSTake a few minutes when you first sit down together with your children to pray and chat about something real-life. Let them see you as human and striving to live your best Catholic life right alongside them. If you’re not sitting down for lessons with your child, you could have this conversation over a meal or in the car—just about anytime, really!

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER1) Read through the chapter (together ideally, or independently) OR opt to use the online

program. Consider yourself warned that it is technologically out of date—you won’t be impressed by the program. But the content is there and its all fine to use in a pinch or if you can’t possibly squeeze in the together time elsewhere. After reading or working through the lesson, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them. This mental work to articulate what they just studied is what will help it to stick.

For the student new to listening and responding (commonly referred to as narrating), have them only read one section at a time before commenting. They may grow towards being able to narrate the whole chapter, or may continue working in small sections. Either is fine!

You might have them write their summary OR speak it aloud to you while you record it so you have a record of the year’s content. We’ve chosen not to provide workbooks this year as often times that kind of wrote engagement doesn’t leave as lasting an impression as wrestling with a section of text in whatever way speaks to your particular child.

Invite them to add to their commonplace book anything they would like to remember from this lesson—things like scripture verses, catechism references, or details about or sketches of art they found inspiring. Commonplace books were common devices used for hundreds of years before the internet—a sort of pinterest board or Instagram before those were things-- and for the written word instead of visuals. Many famous presidents and writers have used this tool to record impactful thoughts and to keep a record of their study. Simply the act of taking the time to painstakingly write something down does wonders to help it stick. We recognize this is likely a new exercise for most, but invite both parents and children to try it—and to trust the process.

2) Only one part of our role as parents and church passing on the faith from one generation to the next is intellectual understanding. The other crucial part is figuring out what it has to do with our lived lives. The questions and discussion points in this section are meant to help you think more deeply about the material in the text, and to challenge your kids to do something about it, in the way they live as Catholics. These also can be used as part of a time set-aside for lessons, or incorporated into family life elsewhere.

**Consider keeping the Parent Guide by a breakfast or dinner table to pull out as you sit down to eat. Pick a question to talk about now and again; or a “Pick 2 Activity” to try before anyone is excused.

You Pick 2This section is full of further ideas for engaging with the material in a wide variety of ways, to suit all kinds of learners, and folks with all kinds of interests. It is the “how-to” give your kids a close-up encounter with the face of Christ. This is really the heart of this year. The content in the book and online is great, so far as it goes. The ideas here is what will bring the faith alive. We hope you’ll give it some priority attention, fitting it into your family life wherever you can. One on a weekend here, another on a day off there, a few others before bedtime or elsewhere as a regular part of your weekly rhythm. The goal is 2 each week. You might even give one to your child as an assignment when they have some downtime they’re not sure what to do with!

Here are a few of the many types of activities you can expect to see, and a little additional guidance on how to implement them…

ReadReadings will most often be about a saint or a scripture. We recommend each family acquire a great anthology of saints lives appropriate for children. We can recommend Glory Story CDs (as a set, a significant investment, or you may choose to buy one here or there over a number of years); and Once Upon a Time Saints (3 volumes, much more cost effective, and with really interesting and lively versions of the stories!). When a saint is recommended, you simply look him or her up… or find an online snippet to share about them. Google works too—just look for hits from catholic.org OR franciscanmedia.org OR loyolapress.com.

If you’re reading a scripture passage, and we hope you do often, try the ancient method of Lectio Divina. There is one short guide here: https://bustedhalo.com/ministry-resources/lectio-divina-beginners-guide and if you’d like a longer read, Fr Basil Pennington’s small book titled Lectio Divina is excellent.

If you choose to read no further than here, just try a simplified version…

1) Light a candle. 2) Invite the holy spirit to come. 3) Then read the passage. (Invite the people listening to close their eyes while you do--just helps

block out distractions!)4) Consider any words or phrases that stood out to you. Share amongst any who are listening.5) Then read again. Listen. 6) Consider why God may be bringing this to your attention. 7) And then read a last time. 8) Consider whether there is anything God may want you to do as a result of your listening.

Simple yet so meaningful. An exercise your kids will keep with them and value through life.

Grade 4

MemorizeA scripture verse and catechism questions from the back of each lesson in the text are included each week. Your child has the option of working toward memorization of either or both of these. Occasionally a prayer will also be suggested for memorization. It’s truly AMAZING how easy memory work comes to little minds. You know they so easily pick up all the lyrics to the songs on the radio; why not challenge them to try something different?

The three children from each grade who memorized the most scripture verses at the end of the year will be invited to a celebration and recognition dinner with Monsignor Royal and the other clergy. Like wise for those who are able to write accurate answers to the most catechism questions.

MakeSome weeks there will be recommendations for crafts or projects for those whose forte is hands-on. Feel free to make these as basic or pinterest-worthy as you and your child are inspired to do—no pressure. Just the act of thinking about and engaging with the material, especially for a more kinesthetic learner, is valuable. Trust the process.

SingFor some this is a total stretch, and if that’s you, skip this one. If, however, music is your thing, don’t be afraid to sit in your living room—or your car!—and sing an old familiar or completely new hymn with your kiddos. You can google the title and many options will come up—instead of singing, you may just listen to a beautiful rendition sung by someone else. There are lots of these available on YouTube. Plug in and enjoy!

Reflect (Picture Study)The concept of Picture Study has been popularized by British educator Charlotte Mason. It is an exercise of close and intentional looking at a great work of art. In the case of the pictures we will recommend this year, it may also be a prayerful encounter with the person of Christ. The process is very simple and you and your child will likely both quickly come to enjoy spending a few minutes doing it.

First, have your child look carefully at the image. Ask them to notice as many things as they can about the painting. Then have them close their books.

Invite them to tell you all about what they’ve seen. What do they think the image is depicting? Let them paint a picture with words, including as much as they can remember.

Then look at the image again. Notice any details you may have missed the first time. Talk about them, and whether or why they might matter.

Lastly, share the title, artist, and/or any pertinent details about the painting, as provided in the guide.

Page 5: d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net€¦  · Web view2021. 1. 4. · CONNECT W/YOUR KIDSTake a few minutes when you first sit down together with your children to pray and chat about something

Grade 4

You may choose to end your time in prayer. Your child may choose to try to re-create the image; or to write about it in his or her commonplace.

Closing NoteThis year is not about perfection. And it’s not for competition or comparison. As you know, children grow in their own time. Some crawl earlier and others later; some read earlier and others later; some can sit through a conversation with no problem and others wiggle (try your lessons with your child on a trampoline, or laying flat on the floor!); some will make a frameable cardboard creation and others you will be embarrassed not to slip into the trash—and all of these things are ok! Your child is beautiful, just as he or she is. The many ideas you will find herein are simply to help you engage with the faith in fresh ways this year so that at the end of it, your child may know the beautiful heart of Christ more deeply. Nothing else matters. So please, before you jump in, breathe a sigh of relief. Try to stretch yourself a little, into unknown territory. Try something new. Stretch your child. But not too thin. Healthy, whole, Christ-like adults is what we’re looking to grow. Be gentle and positive; your enthusiasm (or lackthereof!) will be contagious.

Lesson 1: The Fall of Man“The victory that Christ won over sin has given us greater blessings than those which sin had taken from us: “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Romans 5:20).

Share with your child a story about a time you made a bad choice and what the consequences of that choice were. Tell him also how you made amends.

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER Read Ch 1 or work through the online Lesson 1. Afterwards, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them; and then talk through the following prompts to foster reflection…

In The Beginning

God is the Creator of all things seen and unseen, of earth and heaven.

o We all have moments of recognizing the awesomeness of creation. What are some of the moments you’ve had when you want to thank somebody for the beauty of the world around you?

The Test

God is the all-powerful Creator who, out of his goodness, created man, and wants man to love him freely.

o Discuss some evil things in our world that look beautiful, delicious, or good but in fact are evil and lead to death. (Ex: Having lots of wealth can make us feel like we are self-sufficient and don’t need God. Endless sweet foods can lead to bad health. Impure thoughts and actions can make us feel valued for the wrong reasons.)

A Sad Ending

Because of sin man is divided against himself and others.

o God did NOT stop loving Adam & Eve after they sinned. But by sinning we do separate ourselves from God, which decreases our happiness. Each time we sin we crowd out God, leaving less room for his life in our souls. What are some ways we hurt ourselves through sin?

The Promise of a New Beginning

God in his merciful love has made a way back for mankind.

Page 7: d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net€¦  · Web view2021. 1. 4. · CONNECT W/YOUR KIDSTake a few minutes when you first sit down together with your children to pray and chat about something

o Adam and Eve failed to obey God when they were faced with temptation. Have you ever been tempted? What are some things we can do to become strong in times of temptation?

If you’re doing a sit-down lesson together, pray as you feel led in light of what you’ve experienced.

CHALLENGEEven though Adam & Eve sinned against God, he never stopped loving them and was merciful towards them. The next time someone hurts you, ask God for the grace to be merciful, to forgive. In this way you become a “Little Christ”!

YOU PICK 2Read about Saint Augustine.

Read Genesis 2:3-25 aloud. Light a candle while you listen. Close your eyes. Read it 2 or 3 times. Does anything strike you as important, helpful, or challenging?

Make a collage of what life was like before and after the Fall.

Make a salvation history family tree. This week put only Adam’s and Eve’s names on the tree. Hang it where your child will see it and add to it over the next few weeks.

Memorize Genesis 3:15.

Memorize the Catechism answers on page 16.

Sing Praise to Our Creator

Look at the artwork on page 12. Make your own re-creation or written reflection based on it.

This painting is titled Separation of the Earth and Water (detail) by Michelangelo.

In this fresco, we can envision the power and goodness of God has he separates the land and water during Creation. God is all powerful, all knowing, and all good. Adam and Eve, in their sin of disobedience, wanted to be God. There is one God, and we should not want to be Him.

Show your child a picture of you and your parents (or your child with you). Ask him to identify resemblances between the parents and the child.

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER Read Ch 2 & 3 or work through the online Lesson 2. Afterwards, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them; and then talk through the following prompts to foster reflection…

Cain & Abel

Offering the best that we have matters to God because by doing so we are showing our love for God and our trust in him. In our day we should still bring to God the first fruits of our labor.

o Have you ever put your own money in the offering at church? Have you ever volunteered at an event? What other types of sacrifices can we make in thanksgiving to God? (Ex. Helping others; giving to poor; fasting and abstinence; prayer)

o What is our attitude supposed to be when we make an offering to God?

The 7 Capital Sins

Cain became jealous of his brother and hated him so much that he decided to get rid of Abel. We should love God and be happy at another’s good fortune—not jealous. Jealousy is one of the 7 capital sins.

o Below is a list of the seven capital sins, which lead to all other sins. Try to think of an example of each; and the opposing virtue you could work on to overcome each.

o Pride- love of self (Humility)o Covetousness- inordinate desire for what we don’t have (Generosity)o Envy- unhappiness of another’s good fortune (Kindness)o Anger- when uncontrolled it hardens into resentment or hate (Patience)o Gluttony- overindulgence in food or drink (Temperance)o Lust- sensuous appetite or desire (Chastity)o Sloth- lack of spiritual or physical effort (Diligence)

o NOTE: Murder is a particularly serious sin. God is the author of all life from conception to natural death. We cannot act as God and determine whether or not a life should exist or when life should end, whether it is our own or another’s.

The Tower of Babel

Grade 4

Set up a line of dominoes to demonstrate how one thing affects another, and that there are consequences for our actions. You can use other examples such as a house of cards or pick-up sticks. Have students give examples of this with regard to morality.

o What are some consequences of lying? Not praying? Helping a neighbor? Theft? Fighting? Studying the Faith? Disrespect? Practicing a sport?

There is a difference between feeling good about a project we worked hard on and feeling self-conceit. We should always give thanks and praise to God for our talents, skills and good works.

o What are the disadvantages of starting a project without praying about it to God? o Are there any potential “Towers of Babel” today? (ex. Medical science—cloning, stem cell

research; anything we can do just “because we can” instead of because it is the right thing?)

If you’re doing a sit-down lesson together, pray as you feel led in light of what you’ve experienced. Consider the Act of Contrition or Our Father.

CHALLENGEOffer up a sacrifice to God by eating simple, meatless meals on Friday.

YOU PICK 2Memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4 OR Genesis 6:17-18 OR Proverbs 11:2.

Add Cain, Abel and Seth to the salvation history family tree.

Read about Noah’s Ark as a Prefiguration of the Church. In the City of God Saint Augustine explains how Noah’s ark prefigures the Church. The ark represents the pilgrim Church on earth, and just as Noah’s family was saved from the flood by the cark, we are saved by the wood of Jesus’ Cross. Saint Augustine saw that the door of the ark signified the wound made in Christ’s side by the spear, out of which flowed the Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist. Just as Noah and his family entered the ark through the door, we enter the Church through her Sacraments. He also relates the three levels of the ark to the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. Within the ark were all the animals, clean and unclean. The animals represent all the nations of the world, which are saved in the Church—made up of saints and sinners, and it is by the grace of God that we can enter the Church and be saved. (If you are an adult, check out The City of God by Saint Augustine, XV.25-27).

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER Read Ch 4 or work through the online Lesson 3. Afterwards, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them; and then talk through the following prompts to foster reflection…

Abram

Abram, a descendant of Noah’s son Shem, was called by God to journey to a new land, a Promised land. He got up and left his home in the first of many acts of faith that he would do for God.

o Imagine what it would be like to venture into a territory totally unknown to you… o What do you think kept Abram going? o Discuss pilgrimages, a journey that will lead us to a holy place that will bring us closer to God.

Have you ever been on a pilgrimage? Is there someplace you would like to visit on one? Could this be the year?

The Covenant

God was pleased with Abraham’s faith and he made a covenant with him. A covenant is an oath or sacred agreement that makes you family. It includes a sacrifice, a condition, a sign, and a promise.

o We entered a covenant with God when we were baptized. For many of us, our parents did this for us when we were babies, but we have the rest of our lives to renew this covenant ourselves. Do you know the date of your Baptism? Who are your godparents?

o What things do we need to do to fulfill the covenant with God? (To love God and follow the Commandments.)

Grade 4

In a covenant both sides keep their commitments. God is always committed to his people. Abraham’s test showed that he was completely committed to God.

o Why do you think God sometimes tests us? (God gives us free will to choose to love him or not. He tests us to see what our answer will be. It is easy to say or think we trust in God, but when it comes down to it, we need to act in faith.)

A Happy Ending

Abraham demonstrated tremendous faith. Isaac prefigures Jesus.

o How did Abraham act on his faith? o Is it hard or easy for you to have faith in a God you can’t see? Why? o What good things has God given you that help you to love and trust him?

If you’re doing a sit-down lesson together, pray as you feel led in light of what you’ve experienced—consider praying the Act of Faith, Hope, and/or Love found on pages 161-161 in the book.

CHALLENGEEven though God honored his promise to Abraham in a time and way different from what Abraham expected, in the end God was faithful and his plan perfect. Next time something happens that you don’t very much like or understand, try to trust in God’s perfect and beautiful will!

REFLECT ON THE CHAPTER Read Ch 5 & 6 or work through the online Lesson 4. Afterwards, ask your child to tell back what they’ve heard, noting anything particularly interesting or any questions it may raise for them; and then talk through the following prompts to foster reflection…

Jacob & Esau

Jealousy and envy go against the 9th & 10th commandments. We should discipline our thoughts so that we are happy for others in their successes and satisfied with the graces we have. It is important to guard ourselves against bad thoughts and feelings, because they lead us to sin in action as well.

o Have you ever been envious or sad because someone had something that you didn’t?o What are some reasons you shouldn’t envy others? What good gifts has God given you?

The Blessing

A blessing is calling upon God to make something or someone holy. It is like asking God to allow your best wishes for a person to come true. We can bless objects to be set apart for sacred use or worship. We can bless people, asking God’s blessing to be upon them. Parents can bless their children, asking God to take care of them and give them all that he wants for them.

o Take turns praying a blessing over each other—parent over child first; then child over parent. Ask God for whatever good things you’d like him to provide for your family member.

God Changes Our Names

God changes people’s names many times in the Bible. In the Old Testament, he changed Sarai to Sarah, Abram to Abraham, and Jacob to Israel. In the New Testament, Jesus changed the name of Simon to Peter (Matt 16:16). Saint Peter became the first Pope. Now when a man becomes Pope, he chooses a new name. Pope Benedict XVI, for Instance, was named Joseph Ratzinger until he became Pope in 2005.

The Great Famine

Joseph found himself in prison in Egypt for a crime he did not commit, but God was with him and would use him in a very powerful way. After interpreting dreams of some of the prisoners, his gift became known and eventually was made known to Pharoah. After interpreting Pharoah’s dream, Joseph was given authority over all of Egypt in order to steward the resources of the years of plenty.

o Have you ever used a gift God has given you to help others, without expecting anything back from them?

Stewardship

Joseph demonstrated good stewardship when he took the grain and other food from the seven years of plenty and stored it away. Then when the seven years of famine came, he opened his storehouses and sold it to people who had nothing.

o What are some ways you can demonstrate good stewardship? o How could you be a good steward of any surplus you may receive in a given year, or at a given

time?o Help your children recognize their own gifts. Encourage them to develop their talents and thank

God for these gifts.

God speaks with all of us. When we communicate with God, it is called prayer. In prayer, we lift our hearts and minds to God—in any of a variety of ways! We speak to God and listen to him. Most people will not receive dreams or visions. God will, however, give us peace, joy, and a sense of what is right. He will speak to our hearts, but we must learn to listen.

o Have you ever heard God speak to you? If so how did you know? o What are some of your favorite ways to pray? Why?

If you are doing a sit-down lesson together, end by praying a prayer of thanksgiving for our families, for healing in our friendships, and in hope for our heavenly union with God.

God reveals the meaning of the Phaoah’s dream to save Egypt fro famine; Joseph, who is sitting behind the king, interprets the dream about the seven cows and seven ears of corn (see circles at the top of the painting). Joseph tells the pharaoh that “there will come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt, but after them there will arise seven yars of famine” (Genesis 41:29).

Joseph (center) presents his father and brothers (right) to Pharoah (left) before the famine in Egypt. Pharoah says, “The Land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land” (Genesis 47:6). God continues to provide for Joseph and his family.

Lesson 6: Suffering & Saving“God revealed himself to his people Israel by making his name known to them. A name expresses a person’s essence and identity and the meaning of this person’s life. God has a name; he is not an anonymous force. To disclose one’s name is to make oneself known to others; in a way it is to hand oneself over by becoming accessible, capable of being known more intimately and addressed personally.”

Into Slavery

We can see a connection between Moses, who was given a mission from God-- to lead his people out of slavery—and all of us who are baptized.

o Do you believe that God has a mission for you personally, like Moses? o What do you think is our most important mission in life? (Ex- to know, love, and serve God)o Have you ever known what you needed to do but were afraid to do it, as Moses was?

The Burning Bush

Moses meets God in the burning bush that was miraculously not consumed by fire. This was such a holy event that Moses could not look at God and had to remove his shoes. The holiness of God is powerful. It will consume anything that is not holy.

o Where can we experience a sense of the holiness of God? Have you ever had this experience? Where?

God revealed his name to Moses. He said his name “Yahweh” which in English means “I Am”. The name of God is very holy. The Jewish people had such a reverence for God’s name that they would pronounce it only at the most holy times in the most holy place. The scribes would pray fervently before they wrote it

in the Scriptures. A special pen was used only to write the name of God. The Jewish people still do not even say the name aloud.

o What are some ways we should reverence the name of God?

The Passover

The Passover is the means by which God got them back to the Promised Land. From now on the nations of the world would hear about the Hebrews and know that they are a very special people and that they worship a very powerful God.

o As they were crossing the Red Sea the Hebrew people began to doubt again, asking “Are there not enough graves in Egypt that you bring us out here to die? Why did you ever make us leave Egypt?” Do you think you would have been more like Moses (confident in God’s leadership) or the Hebrew people (questioning it)?

o How has God taken care of you during a difficult time?

If you’re doing a sit-down lesson together, pray the Act of Faith (p. 161).

CHALLENGEGod knows our weaknesses. The next time you have to do something you are not good at, ask God to give you the ability to accomplish the task.

YOU PICK 2Pray, thanking God for our religious freedom, and pray for those who are suffering persecution for their faith. The Israelites suffered so that they could worship the one true God. We are free to worship as Catholics in our country, but many people do not have religious freedom. Today, many people still die for their faith. These people are called martyrs. Discuss modern day persecutions to the extent you are comfortable, as well as wat a gift it is to have religious freedom.

During their wandering, God gave the Israelites mana from heaven and the Ten Commandments.

God always provided for the Israelites as they were wandering in the desert. He gave them manna and quail to eat, and their clothes never wore out.

o Yet the Israelites still complained… What do we complain about? How has God provided for our needs? How do you react when you receive something good unexpectedly?

o Read Exodus 19:5-6. According to this verse, what must we do? How?

Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land.

Then he commanded them to march around the city each day for six days while carrying the Ark of the Covenant.

o This instruction might’ve seemed silly to them, but was important. Do you ever think your parents or God is asking you to do something that doesn’t make a lot of sense?

o Have your parents ever asked you not to hang around people who do not share your values? Why do you think they do this?

Samson was a strong and mighty warrior because God gave him a special gift.

It is a privilege to be chosen by God to accomplish something great. However, even someone as special as Samson can become weak and stupid. If God has given us a gift, we must be careful to guard it and use it for his purposes.

o Samson grew prideful of his strength and forgot to give glory to God for it. Are there any great gifts that you have that you have been given by God? Do you remember to thank God for it?

It demonstrates that people of all places and al times look for God. The particular gifts that hey ring signify that they acknowledge his kingship (gold), his holiness (frankincense), and his sacrifice (myrrh). Jesus was in the presence of Moses and Elijah. He appeared to Peter, James, and John to give them hope that he was the Son of God.

This painting is titled The Holy Trinity by El Greco

In this painting we see an intense relationship of love between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Christ’s lifeless body in the center depicts total self-giving love. The weight of Christ’s shoulders falls upon the Father, who is behind him and continues to pour out his love by holding up his Son. The dove signifies the Holy Spirit, who “proceeds from the Father and Son.” The holy Spirit is the fruit of the love between the Father and Son. The gold light from behind signifies that this is a heavenly reality that is eternal. The artist draws us into the painting as n invites us to participate in the inner life of the Trinity. As the Father receives his Son, he also is giving him to us. We are called to respond. Focus on Jesus Christ and pray that you are able to respond to the love of the Blessed Trinity in small acts of self-giving.

Christ sits in judgment at the Second Coming. He is surrounded by saints in heaven, including the Blessed Mother and Saint Peter (holding the keys). In the lower part of the painting, what we can somewhat see in this detail is that to the right of Christ are the righteous who have been saved (the sheep); to the left of Christ are those who have rejected him (the goats).
