When air pressure is low, weather forecasters can predict precipitation, such as snow or rain.

Box 1:Carbon CycleThe carbon cycle has been a topic of discussion among scientists. What is the carbon cycle? The movement of carbon around different parts of Earth. The movement of carbon from the air into our bodies. The movement of carbon from burning fuels into the atmosphere. Box 3:The carbon cycle is the exchange of carbon through the atmosphere, soil, oceans, sediments, and the interior of Earth. It is called a cycle because volcanoes and thermal vents release carbon back out into the atmosphere to repeat the exchange over and over again. In the atmosphere, carbon exists as carbon dioxide and is important in supporting life. Forests store carbon in trees above ground and in soil below ground. As carbon cycles through oceans, some living things in the oceans use the carbon to make hard body parts like shells. Since oceans cover almost three-fourths of Earth's surface, the oceans are a major part of the carbon cycle.

For example, when the temperature outside becomes very cold, water will turn into ice. Therefore, there is a cause-and-effect relationship between temperature and water turning into ice. Many discoveries in science are best understood by describing their causes-and-effects. When scientists see a connection between two things, they try to show a cause-and-effect relationship. For example, below is a photo of a parched, or extremely dry, stretch of land. The land is parched because there has been no rain for a long time. The cause is "no rain." The effect is "parched land."

Climate ChangeEarth has experienced climate change since before anything lived on the planet. What is climate change? Changes in weather over long periods of time氣候改變是經過長時間的Changes in weather from one season to the next氣候的改變是從一個季節到另一個Changes in weather during one day一天之內可以有氣候改變Box 3:Climate change is a change in long-term weather patterns. For example, increases or decreases in temperatures around the world over many years would signal a climate change. When dinosaurs were living, Earth was much warmer than it is today. Over the millions of years since dinosaurs became extinct, Earth has gotten colder due to climate change. Today, Earth may be going through another period of climate change, but the question is still to be studied. The graph below shows climate change in the Antarctic region using three different models. The first two models reflect changes in temperature at two different locations over the last 450 thousand years. Humidity is the amount of water vapor, or moisture, in the air. When there is high humidity it often rains and reduces the amount of water vapor in the air. Humidity also changes with the temperature. Keeping the humidity of the air lower by using an air conditioner in the summer helps people feel more comfortable. At high humidity, perspiration (sweat) does not leave the skin quickly, so we feel hot and sticky. In the cold winter months, the air is much dryer and the low humidity can make a person's skin feel very dry. Box 5:In which of the following sentences is the word humidity used correctly? A When the humidity is high outside, it often rains. B When the humidity is low outside, it often rains. C The humidity in the air smelled like smoke. D The humidity in the air caused strong winds.
