Web Writing:

Keep it short.

Keep it clear.

Remember anyone can access these pages, even the press, it is important you present yourself on the Web the same way you would like the news to present you on TV. (the same goes for pictures)

FYI - Your page(s) are right off of Erie 1 BOCES home page navigation. Parents and potential students will constantly be looking at these pages. By being on the Web 24/7 you are marketing your class and are an ambassador for the organization.

Since Anyone Can Access the WWW:

Don’t Invite Danger. When listing a field trip on the Web, be certain to do just that. Do not give too many details such as exact times, locations, etc …leave those details to the parent letter. Don’t invite a predator.

When allowed to post a student photo, be certain not to list their full name or too many details about them such their birthday. Try to stick to group photos and not identifying the students. Predators, broken homes and identity thieves are a reality.

Basic Web Design Tips for TEXT The color blue is traditionally reserved for links. In the

Web design world, avoid using blue text unless it indicates a link.

The color red should be used for emergency or very important yet temporary information.(i.e.: Homework Change, Class is canceled today!)

Animated clip art is strongly discouraged.

Why? Animated pieces can take a very long time to download. You should always assume your students could be using dial-up to access the Web. By using animated clip art you are making them wait for your page to come up and taking time away that they could be reading your content/accessing homework.

Animation, when pertaining to the class curriculum (such as design and computer animation) is acceptable but recommend placement is on a secondary page rather than a main welcome page.

Copyright – What does that mean?Copyright – What does that mean? Copyrighted materials include:

Photographs Logos Music Videos Cartoons Drawings/Paintings/Graphs/Charts/Animation Articles Other Web Pages (their content and photos) Basically anything that is published in print and electronic form.

The Web is considered being Published or Public. Teachers have no fair use on the Web.If you copy an article from another site and paste it onto your page (even if it is sourced) you broke copyright. The same goes for photos/videos/images/etc… The better way is to write an intro and link to the content you like.

Try to post a disclaimer on your pages that you nor E1B is responsible for the content on other pages once they leave our Web site.

Thus you cannot “right click” and “copy & paste” any photo, cartoon, image (chart/graphic) or video you like and drop it into your Web site.

Nor can you scan it from a book and put it on your Web page.

Even if you are working with an outside organization, like SkillsUSA, you must ask their permission to use their logo regardless. Get it in writing. Save it in a printed form.

Handouts (created by anyone but you) cannot be posted on the Web without the owner’s permission. Even if it says “okay for classroom reproduction” – the Web is not the classroom. You just inadvertently re-published it to the world and took $ away from their publisher.

When linking to another Web site be sure that your link takes visitors out of our Web site and onto the outsider’s page. Displaying the outsider’s page within our E1B pages, called framing, does breaks copyright laws.

Student work is copyrighted to them. You should not post student material on the Web without the parent’s permission and the student’s permission – in writing.

The law continues to change. Deep linking is next to be targeted. Some legal precedence has been established.

This is real. Parents are increasingly becoming aware of their rights and so are students. You need to be informed as well.

This is real. Companies are watching, schools and teachers have been sued.

Disney is best known for this.

Schoolwires Clip Gallery

Microsoft Clip Art Gallery is okay for school projects (it cannot

be used to market a business). But you must include an attribution that credits the source.

Student work - after you have obtained permission from the parent and the student. (18 yrs, where applies, only the student okay is needed)

Directly purchased material that specifically gives you the license to use on the Web for that one time. (i.e.: “Royalty Free” music & photos purchased by you and for you. You are responsible for and must adhere to your licensing agreement with the company, such as listing them as a source if that is in your contract. You also need to provide proof of purchase to Communications.)

Please call Communications with any questions and/or clarification.

FERPA As you know, parents can opt-out of having student

photos be announced/used in press and newsletters. You should have a new list each year.

Legal is now advising that student photos on the Web must have separate written parent permission. FERPA’s opt-out does not necessarily apply.

Thus, do NOT use a student’s photo on the Web without specific written parent permission to do so.

Once Permission is Obtained

Be Aware of Student Photo DetailsBe sure the student picture you want to post is a positive representation of the school/class. Examples: they are in dress code, they are happy, they are not smoking and people are not fighting in the background.

Reminder do not use the students full names or personal details such as address or birthday.
