A note from Sue…Welcome back to autumn issue of the Deeside gazette.

British Food Fortnight is on and so is the Food and Fiddle Fortnight! What better way to celebrate food than with music. There is plenty for you to go and see in and around Banchory. The golfing ladies of Banchory have done well this season and the Banchory Singers have returned to their weekly rehearsals on a Wednesday. If you want to keep fit then there is no better way than Boxercise. A new class has started at Crathes Hall and once my broken toe is mended I’ll definitely be along – maybe see you there.

The crafting community are always busy making things but there is usually a big surge to have Christmas goodies ready for you to buy. Look out for local fairs going on as there will be plenty in the coming months.

Speaking of the “C” word – where do you do your shopping for Christmas? Is it locally? Is it online? Is it in Aberdeen at the shopping centres? In a bid to let you see what the local shops have to offer this Christmas we are embarking on our Christmas products page. It is an opportunity for local businesses to show you their original, unique, quirky gifts for Christmas. Let’s get people out of the shopping centres and into the local shops this Christmas. If you have some photos of your products please send them in with a description and price and we’ll compile our Christmas gift guide for the local area. Obviously you might get a better response if you are advertising but happy to support ALL local shops. So get snapping. Send your images to [email protected] before 30 October!

Now it’s time to refill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Until next time,

Sue

Banchory Golf Club -

Ladies Section held an invitation day on Thursday 7th August which was attended by 64 ladies. Following the golf games, the ladies were treated to a fabulous buffet by Elaine of Elm Catering. The course was in excellent condition and the scores were reflective of that.

Clockwise from top left -Joanna D'Onghia, Ruth Lyon, June Robertson, Susan Black, Lesley Nicol, Mel McCrory, Rhona Pirie, Cindy Ramage.Tricia Hallwell and Carmen Eakin,

Prizes for the day were very kindly donated by the Burnett Arms Hotel, Scott Skinners and Carlton House Hair Stylists.

We really do appreciate your support.

Many thanks Kathleen Taylor (Lady Captain)

Grant Centenary SpoonsThis year was the 10th Anniversary of the Grant Centenary Spoons – presented by Lesley Grant a former Lady Captain and multiple winner of the Club Championship! It is a stoke play competition using only 5 clubs so one has to choose wisely! This year on the 28th August, the trophy winner was Colleen Young with a net 70 narrowly beating Judith Carr on the back nine (who also had the same score). There were 25

ladies who braved the elements as play commenced in a heavy downpour but luckily the weather improved as the day went on! A celebration cake was enjoyed by all who played and Lesley not only received a lovely bunch of flowers but also had a buggy ride out on the course for a photo session! Many thanks go to Lesley for her continued support of the club and congratulations to Colleen on her victory.

Great food and drink and innovative interior design were the subjects of discussion at the Dining Club facilitated by the Grampian Food Forum on Monday, September 8.

General Manager Robbie Mitchell welcomed over eighty Forum guests to the newly refurbished Banchory Lodge Hotel and tempted them with a variety of tasters ably presented in the theme of a busy street market.

Existing and local suppliers to the Hotel include Deeside Brewery, Deeside Mineral Water, Devenick Dairy, Balmakewan Farm Shop, HM Sheridan’s, Rizza’s, Braehead Foods, Corney and Barrow, Blue Flag, and Turriff’s.

Martin Simpson, Managing Director at Deeside Mineral Water commented “It’s wonderful to be at Banchory Lodge and see it looking so good. The style is first class and sure to attract visitors and we are delighted to supply them.

“The collaboration encouraged by the Forum allows for introductions to be made between suppliers and potential new customers which is great for business.”

Peter Walker, General Manager of Meldrum House addressed guests on behalf of the Forum stressing the importance of the Dining Club and its role in promoting the greater use of local produce in the region’s eating establishments.

Grampian Food Forum activities are open to all those

involved in food and drink in Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City and Moray. Small Business to international companies are invited to participate.

Falling over Food and FiddlesA splendid summer followed by a glorious autumn – or Fall as they say in the USA – and fall is what I do, for autumn every year. I’m inspired by the colours, the sounds, the smells and tastes that make autumn such a special season, and to celebrate this most evocative of times, Visit Royal Deeside are hosting the second annual Food and Fiddle Fortnight. This two week festival is chock-full of events dedicated to showcasing the local produce, artisans, natural musical talent and independent cafes, restaurants and hotels that are studded throughout the region.

The area will be well-represented, with events from Banchory to Braemar, including Tarland and Finzean to name but a few of the towns and villages taking part.

Woodend Barn have the fantastic Old Dance Band (who are anything but – old I mean) and Buchanans Bistro are hosting local folk musicians to complement their Fiddler’s Board, and a chance to taste their craft beers. Braemar Castle continue the tasting theme with gins and whiskies in the Castle Dining Room, accompanied by local musical talent.

Traditional music sessions can often be hard to find but there is talent a-plenty on Deeside

during October. Raemoir House Hotel are holding a special evening with David Anderson in their marquee, sessions can be found at the Aberdeen Arms in Tarland, the Boat Inn in Aboyne and the Deeside Activity Park near Lumphanan. Many of the food destinations on our map will also feature local musicians as an added bonus.

Traditional Sunday lunches are also on the programme from the Deeside Activity Park and a three course buffet supper at the Finzean Farm Shop starring venison, with young local pipers and fiddlers to help your digestion!

We are proud of our local markets and during the Food & Fiddle fortnight there are two weekly Torphins markets at Platform 22, as well as a Banchory Market in Bellfield Park which will be celebrating with pumpkin carving and local musicians. Strachans of Aboyne will be showcasing a wide variety of local businesses and operating as a hub for the two-week festival.

Glendavan House – a splendid 5 star bed and breakfast nestled near to the Burn o’Vat in Dinnet, is offering a Highland Hamper and Bagpipe Breakfast combination – apparently bagpipes are the Queen’s alarm clock and if it’s good enough for Balmoral…

The final weekend of the festival is an extravaganza of food and fiddles, starting with a walk in the hills guided by mountain rescue’s Ian Murray, serenaded by Paul Anderson and fed by the Station Restaurant in Ballater, then a ceilidh & concert in Tarland with the New Distillery Ceilidh Band featuring Alasdair Johnston and finally a Landrover Safari through the breathtaking scenery of the Glen Tanar estate topped off with a venison BBQ at Etnach.

We will be out and about promoting the Food & Fiddle fortnight during September, so if you see a person-sized pumpkin and fiddle or some such nonsense disappearing round a corner – don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Up to date information on events can be found at www.visitroyaldeeside.com, you can also keep up to date with what’s happening on Facebook and Twitter – hope to see you all there!

Garden View Blooms from bulbs

It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November).

The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers!

Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems.

When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules:Wear gloves when handling, as some are toxic and can cause skin irritationsTry and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any

sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour).Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is okDamaged or split bulbs should not be selected

Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different.

Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development

Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they

finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties.

Other favourites of mine are:

Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’ an exquisite orange and purple flower

Narcissus ‘Thalia’ a white and scented daffodil

Galtonia, an imposing 60cm tall with grass like foliage and a 90cm high flower spike in white

Chionodoxa, with around 10 blue blooms per stalk, this is a small but cheery bulb

 Enjoy your garden  Lee

British Food Fortnight20th September – 5th October

Name a British dish. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding? Shepherds’ pie? Spotted dick?

Now ask your child to name a traditional British dish. Can they?

In recent years we have become a multi-cultural society and we’ve happily adopted pasta from Italy, curry, from India and noodles from China. While we should be proud of the fact that we’ve welcomed and assimilated these new tastes, we seem to be in danger of forgetting or ignoring our own national and regional dishes.

It’s a sad fact that many British school children (and almost as many adults)have little or no knowledge of our culinary heritage in spite of it being rich and varied.

British Food Fortnight exists to put British food firmly in the spotlight. It aims to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes. To this end it takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. This year it also has the additional aim of helping our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food.

The theme is Bringing Home the Harvest. Many schools are participating with the aim of teaching children how to prepare simple meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients. High street shops, farm shops and delicatessens will also be joining in, stocking British produce and running tasting sessions and cookery demonstrations.

There will be special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country

fairs.

With global warming rarely out of the news these days it’s reassuring to know that buying locally farmed, seasonal produce is the most eco-friendly choice too. It’s comforting to know that by buying British we’re doing our bit to save the planet.

Preparation time: 15 minsCooking time: 30 minsServes: 4

Ingredients4 large Golden Delicious Apples1 splash Lemon Juice85g Walnuts, halved1 tbsp Raisins1 tbsp Soft Light Brown Sugar25g Butter¼ tsp Ground Cinnamon

MethodPreheat the oven to 180°C /Gas 4. Carefully cut a 2.5cm (1in) slice from the top of each apple and set aside. Using an apple corer or a small, sharp knife, remove the core from each apple.

Place the walnuts, raisins, sugar, butter, and cinnamon into a food processor and pulse several times, to produce a coarse, textured mixture. If you don’t have a food processor, chop the walnuts roughly and mix thoroughly with the other ingredients.

Stuff each apple cavity with the mixture and replace the reserved tops. Arrange the apples in a shallow, ovenproof dish so that they’re upright, and then fill the pan 1cm (1/2in) deep with water.

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the flesh is tender when pierced with the point of a knife. When slightly cooled, carefully remove the apples from the baking dish, transfer them to serving plates, and serve hot with crème fraiche or ice cream.

Jam Today…Autumn is the perfect time to start preserving. You can use home grown fruits or those you’ve foraged amongst the hedgerows. Preserving is relatively easy. Once the fruit has been picked, washed and prepared, you just need some simple equipment to turn it into marvellous produce.

You can get lots of advice from your local cook shop on what’s required, but some basics are: a large heavy based saucepan, spoons and funnels, a sugar thermometer, containers and jars, lids and labels.

The concept of preserving foods has been around since the earliest humans. To survive, ancient man had to harness nature. In frozen climates he froze seal meat on the ice. In tropical climates he dried foods in the sun. Food by its nature begins to spoil the moment it is harvested. So the ability to preserve food enabled ancient man to make roots, and live in one place and form a community.

Preservation with the use of honey or sugar was well known to the earliest cultures. It was commonplace for fruits to be kept in honey. In ancient Greece quince was mixed with honey, dried and packed tightly into jars. The Romans cooked the quince and honey producing a solid texture. As there’s not enough sunlight in Northern climates to successfully dry fruits, housewives learned to make preserves, heating the fruit with sugar, and this is the method we know today.

Whilst there is no longer a pressing survival reason for preserving, it can be very rewarding. As well as providing delightful food and drink for you to consume, you could also make your preserved fruits into lovely Christmas gifts. There are many possibilities including jams and marmalades, chutneys and pickles, and beverages such as sloe gin. Many establishments run evening classes which can help you create these and many other fabulous recipes, such as fruit butter or fruit cheese.

When preserving, you should use fruits that are sun ripened, as the process will not improve green tasteless fruit. Using fruit that has a high acid content is recommended, as it less likely to harbour bacteria. When filling jars, you should ensure they

are hot as temperature drops will increase the likelihood of bacteria forming. For the same reason, always cover your jars straight away and when the jars are cooled, you should recheck the seals and tighten lids to prevent any air entering and causing mould to form. Or you could use a waxed disc of paper and cellophane to act as a cover.

Keep your preserves in a cool, dark, dry place. Chutneys and pickles can last for around a year, and fruit liqueurs and fruits in alcohol up to two years. Once opened, store in the fridge and use quickly.

The Night CircusBy Erin Morgenstern

“The circus arrives without warning … It is simply there when yesterday it was not”

So begins this adult fantasy novel. From the seductive opening you are drawn into the world of the circus. The mysterious circus owner, Prospero the Enchanter, otherwise known as Hector Bowen, is a magician and Le Cirque des Rêves is the greatest accomplishment of his career. Magic unfolds on every page as his circus and its assembled performers enchant and amaze its audience. Time moves differently in the circus, as the performers

appear not to age. Acrobats perform without safety nets and the audience move from one spectacle to another, created by the illusionist who transforms tents on a whim.

Fates intertwine as two young protégés must meet and compete on this unsuspecting stage. The ultimate bet will be decided after years of dedication and preparation.

Set in America and Europe in the late 1800s this novel oozes with an era that never quite existed. A steampunk retelling of the Victorian age that you will wish you could visit. The language is poetic and evocative and you will find yourself longing for the day when the circus arrives near you without warning. You too will want to wear a red scarf and join the rêveurs.

Magic Tree House: Valley of the DinosaurBy Mary Pope Osborne

Time travel. A quest to solve. Exciting adventures. This book for young readers who are growing in confidence has all of these and much more. The first of a series of books, it follows the adventures of Jack and Annie as they discover a magic treehouse in their neighbourhood.

As the story begins Jack and Annie are chasing an imaginary monster into a nearby wood when they stumble across a solitary treehouse. Curiosity getting the better of them, they decide to explore and inside they find wonderful collection of books. Jack is drawn to a dinosaur book and before they know it the two children are transported back to the time of the dinosaurs.

Full of fascinating facts this book will

appeal to any budding palaeontologist. At ten chapters this is a nice introduction to reading without seeming too daunting. The sentence structure can be repetitive and simplistic, but I am assured by young readers that this is not a problem!

There are currently sixteen books available in the series covering different time periods and geographic locations. These along, with an interactive website, promise to engage and educate young readers for many a long school holiday.

I Didn’t Know I Could Freeze That!Reduce your food waste. Use your freezer.

Bread – Wrap well and store somewhere it won’t get squashed. Defrost over night for the best results.

Garlic – chop and place in ice-cube trays. Cover and freeze. Keeps it fresh and stops it stinking out the fridge.

Cheese – Either freeze in a block or grate it first. Defrost thoroughly before returning to the fridge or it will become dry and crumbly.

Onions – pre-chop lots and freeze them in bags ready for use from frozen whenever you need them!

Fresh Herbs – Bags of fresh herbs often go to waste. Chop and mix with butter then freeze in small pats or cubes. Or chop and place in ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze, ready to put straight into soups and casseroles.

Eggs - You can crack them and freeze in bags for cakes or scrambled eggs. Defrost thoroughly before use. They’ll keep for up to a year.

Citrus fruit – Don’t waste the whole fruit when a recipe calls for zest. Pop the rest of the fruit in a poly bag and into the freezer. Defrost as required. Citrus fruits will keep for up to six months.

Music is an important part of life – nearly everyone enjoys listening to it. Yet relatively few of us have the ability to create it.

Scientists say that children who play an instrument do better academically than those who don’t. It can benefit their reading age because it enhances comprehension skills. Learning to understand beat, rhythm and scales improves their maths skills as children learn how to divide, create fractions and recognise patterns. Listening to pitch, rhythm and tempo helps to sharpen their concentration and using mnemonic devices to learn musical patterns can improve memory.

Co-ordination and motor skills are also developed as a child learns to convert written notes to movement of hands, arms and feet. This improved co-ordination and timing can benefit children in other hobbies such as dance and sports.

Children who learn as part of a group cultivate social skills as they interact with other class members. They learn to wait patiently for their turn, and show respect for others. It’s also a chance to make friends, especially if they play in a band or orchestra.

Mastering an instrument and achieving goals takes months or even years. Perseverance and patience are useful qualities developed along the way, as is self-confidence which grows further if they go on to perform in public.

Caring for their instrument teaches a child responsibility, while managing their time to ensure that practice is done regularly helps them develop organisational skills.

Finally, learning about and playing a musical instrument can help children discover the role of music in other cultures, and this familiarity from an early age helps foster open-mindedness about worlds and traditions beyond the ones they know.

If your child shows an interest in learning an instrument, be sure to choose one that excites them (my daughter was horrified to be presented with a cello when what she coveted was a

clarinet). Select an instrument that suits their ability and temperament, and make sure it produces a sound that you can tolerate for hours as you listen to them practise (I have memories of my mum banishing me to the furthest corner of the house because

she couldn’t bear the sound of me screeching on the violin!).

I was nine when my parents found me a piano teacher, and even though the road has not always been smooth, I am forever grateful to them for taking this decision, as I consider myself amongst the privileged few who have had the opportunity to learn an instrument and enjoy the benefits this brings.

Fit ‘n’ FunDoes going to the gym sound as appealing as root canal surgery? Does the thought of going for a run make you want to hide under the duvet for the rest of your life?

If you’ve tried aerobics, spinning and swimming and still can’t get into your exercise groove, what about

these more unusual ways to get fit and burn fat?

Bounce Baby!

While a trampoline gives you some bounce and helps you to become airborne, you need to use your muscles to push yourself into the air and to control your movements so you stay upright. If you’ve ever spent time on a trampoline with your kids, you know it’s a great workout!

Invest in a good trampoline for your garden and use it regularly. It’s fun and will get you outdoors into the fresh air, as well as help you to build muscle and burn calories.

Dance like there’s no-one watching!

Salsa dancing is a great way to get your legs and bum toned and firm, and it’s also a fun way to spend time with someone you love! You can dance on your own or visit a dance club and join the group. You’ll make friends and have the most fun you’ve ever had getting into shape!

Be the daring young man or woman on the flying trapeze!

When you use a trapeze you need to control all your muscles for proper balance and stretching, and it’s a great way to burn calories at the same time.

More gums are offering classes now. Look for a beginner class near you and don’t worry about heights. Initially you start very close to the ground as you learn how to get comfortable in the harnesses and about the mechanics of swinging. Only then will you move on to more advanced moves.

Pole is good for the soul!

Pole dancers need to be in great shape, since they swing themselves around a pole to get into a variety of positions for the best routine. It’s a fun and effective way to get into shape, and can also be very sexy! Remember that there is a HUGE difference between pole dancing and stripping, so don’t be shy about checking out a class near you. You may find it’s one of the most enjoyable ways to burn calories, trim your waistline, and build long, lean muscles.

Surfing USA...but indoors!

Surfers usually have great leg muscles toned bottoms, since they’re using all these muscles to keep themselves on their boards and to guide and direct themselves in the water. Today, indoor surfing classes are popping up in gyms everywhere because this is such a fun way to stay in shape. These classes use short boards that work much like surfboards and which tone all the lower body muscles. They’re a fun and inventive way to work out and may even turn you into a serious surfer!

Daoist Tai Chi Master visits DeesideChen Lisheng, Daoist priest and 15th generation Wudang gongfu master visited Banchory and Stonehaven at the end of August. His visit was hosted by Jane Innes, principal instructor of Tai Chi Aberdeenshire as part of a cultural exchange.

Jane Innes has practised Tai Chi and Chi Gong for 17 years and has been teaching since 2005. She visits China regularly where she has been studying Wudang Taiji Quan and Daoist health cultivation with Master Chen Lisheng since 2009.

Chen Lisheng is a highly regarded teacher of Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Gong and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet Sifu Chen and practice Wudang Five Animal Chi Gong. This is a series of five short routines, each routine broken down into simple movements and students can easily obtain the basic outline in a few sessions.

Millions of people worldwide recognise the benefits of Tai Chi and Chi Gong practice, Chen Lisheng's visit has been a golden opportunity to learn more about Daoist health practices through exercise and meditation.

More information about Tai Chi and Chi Gong is available on www.taichiaberdeenshire.co.uk or contact Jane on 01330 822608.
