A note from Sue…

Welcome back to the summer issue of the gazette.

There is certainly plenty to do in and around Banchory these holidays. Woodend Barn has workshops, movies, live shows or just pop-along to Buchanans for a snack or lunch or dinner. Take a look out the back and see how the allotments are looking, might inspire you to start your own.

The Banchory Show – a fantastic event on the Banchory calendar. I do hope the weather holds to make it even more spectacular.

There’s been a new trail published by Aberdeenshire Council. The Whisky Trail - it is an excellent opportunity to go and visit some of the lesser known distilleries surrounding the area. Leaflets can be picked up at the Tourist Office or at the distilleries themselves.

Read about my experience with Alizonne on the centre pages but please do read my blog on the website if you wish a more detailed and realistic weekly breakdown of how it went

www.gazettemagazines.com/blog-alizonne

A warm gazette welcome to our new and returning advertisers! It’s always nice to be able to let you meet a new business. One final thing to end the summer with some art – why not visit the Aberdeen Art Fair at the music hall. It is definitely a brilliant event held annually in the city.

Deadline – 30 August for the September/October magazine Any editorial content to be relevant for reading in mid-September thru to end of October and beyond.

Until next time. Sue

Construction of new Drumoak SchoolConstruction of the new replacement primary school for Drumoak has commenced.

The school is designed to accommodate 145 pupils, with 30 children in the pre-school nursery.

As well as six classrooms, the school includes a double badminton court sports hall with showers and changing accommodation, a general purpose room, a library and a fully equipped kitchen for the preparation and cooking of school meals.

Office accommodation for the school management and admin support staff is located adjacent to a controlled entrance and all the classrooms have access to internal “break-out space” for supervised group activity and direct access to a hard landscaped external space for outdoor activities.

The design is extremely energy efficient, using sustainable photovoltaic solar panels on the roof and a biomass fuelled boiler

providing all the heating and hot water requirements.

Access to the site will be from the new housing development to the north of the site, currently under construction by the Stewart Milne Company and due to be completed within a year. Staff and visitor car parking and pupil drop-off have been carefully designed next to the school entrance and external play space including an all-weather sports pitch lie between the school and the south boundary of the site.

Road widening and pedestrian crossings are under construction on the main access road from the village to the school to improve vehicular and pedestrian access.

Robertson Eastern Limited has been appointed contractor for this project which is programmed to be completed and handed over by the end of May 2015.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure committee, Isobel Davidson, said “A new primary school for Drumoak has been a high priority for this council and the education service for many years, and it’s great to see that construction will begin shortly,” she said.

“This new school is truly a school fit for the future with excellent design to reduce heating and hot water costs, to accommodate the growing population in the village of Drumoak and the surrounding area.”

Discover Summer at Woodend BarnSet just to the east of Banchory, Woodend Barn Arts Centre is a surprising find in the beautiful countryside of Royal Deeside. Not many people would expect that this converted Barn, for once upon a time it was indeed a barn and cattle byre, has a programme of events that rivals that of any city centre arts venue. Live music, theatre, dance, film - as well as ballet, opera and theatre streamed live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and The Royal Shakespeare Company are all on offer at Woodend Barn as well as art, music and theatre workshops.

In the coming weeks you can enjoy performances as diverse as a cello recital from Philip Higham (17 July), dance and theatre from Aberdeen International Youth Festival (28, 30 July & 9 August), a concert from the massively talented Rachel Sermanni with Colin Macleod and Lizabett Russo (5 August), a performance from everyone’s favourites Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham (28 August), live streaming of The Royal Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona (3 September) as well as Wolf of Wall Street (23 July) and The Lego Movie (2 August) in film offerings. Later, in September (26), Julie Fowlis makes an appearance at the Barn, a wonderful opportunity to see such a talented singer in an intimate space, especially as Julie is making a name for herself since singing the main song in Disney’s Brave. Some internationally renowned names grace the stage

here, such as Joan Armatrading, who will be playing a very special intimate show (sold out!) in September. Newton Faulkner played a sold out show earlier in the year, as did Twin Atlantic, putting Woodend Barn on the map as a top Scottish venue.

Over the years, Woodend Barn has also become a favourite venue for weddings, offering a space that can be personalised to make a celebration as unique as the couple to be married.

Woodend Barn is easily accessed just off the A93, past Tesco and on the right. There’s a large free car park and as well as the performance space, Woodend Barn is home to a gallery in the Lang Byre within the Barn. Round the back of the building you can take some time out to wander round the wild garden, a favourite spot for wedding couples to have their photos taken and also admire the beautifully laid out Woodend Allotments where local growers have cultivated an impressive collection of fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Extremely tempting cakes, coffee, lunches and evening meals are available at Buchanans Bistro, right next door to the Barn. Menus can be seen here www.buchananfood.com.

Everything you need to know can be found at www.woodendbarn.co.uk including full listings and information on how to hire Woodend Barn for your private event. You can also email [email protected] or give the Barn a call on 01330 826520.Next time you’re thinking of taking in a theatre show, a film or some live music, think Woodend Barn!

Garden View Maximus flora phobia - true or just a tall story?

I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it.  Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans.  I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18.  “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every

spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house.

Garden View Maximus flora phobia - true or just a tall story?

There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s

known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select

the correct tree or shrub in the first place.  If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a

small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide.  A little research should throw up some good varieties.  Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal.  Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil.

Ifyou’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms.  If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-t-five feet darling’.  She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway! Enjoy your garden  Lee

Whisky trail Secret Malts of AberdeenshireThe active and lost whisky distilleries dotted around Aberdeenshire have been brought together for the first time.

Aberdeenshire’s rich but under-recognised whisky heritage is being showcased with the council’s Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide.

Aberdeenshire Council’s economic development team has been working in partnership with local whisky producers to highlight the hidden range of small distilleries all within an hour’s drive of Aberdeen.

Targeting the tourism markets, both at home and abroad, whisky connoisseurs, local people and historians, The Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide highlights the fascinating history of eight local working distilleries.

The comprehensive booklet also details the area’s “lost”, or non-operational, distilleries, as well as a guide to whisky tasting and the location of some specialist whisky retail outlets.

Of the eight working distilleries featured in the guide, most are relatively small in scale but each has its own distinctive history, style and taste. Four of them have small visitor centres and shops offering regular tours led by knowledgeable guides.

Three of the distilleries are not officially open to the public, but will organise informal tours, often led by the distillery manager who can offer a unique insight into how their whisky is made.

Whilst the Speyside area is rightly celebrated across the world for being the centre of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, our relatively small and intimate distilleries also have a huge amount to offer to

visitors and to the whisky connoisseur.

Perhaps a little less well known, the flavours, quality and

charm of these “secret malts” make it well worth the effort for us to highlight the trail and for visitors to seek them out.

The industry supports 35,000 jobs and around £2 billion is being invested in infrastructure over the next two years. It is of vital importance to the economy.

Aberdeenshire’s eight working distilleries featured in the guide are:• ArdmoreatKennethmont• Fettercairn• GlendronachatForgue• GlenGariochatOldmeldrum• GlenglassaughatPortsoy• KnockdhuatKnock• Macduff• TheRoyalLochnagaratCrathie

Copies of the Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire is now widely available free at each of the distilleries and local visitor information centres. Details online at www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk1

Walking Back to Happiness

Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly

those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression.

SpinningIndoor Cycling

Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people in a sociable and safe environment.

The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or family-friendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £32 or £3 per month.

The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular non-competitive exercise. To participate, simply turn up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv.org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual

membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails.

If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help cross-country skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour. For more information visit www.britishnordicwalking.org.uk or www.nordicwalking.co.uk.

Bach Flower RemediesBorn in 1886, Edward Bach was an English doctor, bacteriologist and pathologist, who was conducting research into vaccines when he became interested in a more holistic approach to medicine. Dissatisfied with the tendency to treat the disease rather than the whole person, he began collecting plants and in particular flowers - the most highly developed part of a plant - to find remedies.

He believed that illness was the result of internal conflict, and that negative moods such as unhappiness, fear or worry, caused a lack of harmony which ultimately manifested

themselves in physical disease. By correcting this emotional imbalance, illness could be treated or avoided. “Health depends on being in harmony with our souls,” he asserted.

Bach abandoned scientific methods of research and turned instead to his intuition to guide him to the right plants. Whilst experiencing a negative emotion he would hold his hand over different plants, and if one alleviated the problem he would ascribe to it the power to heal. In this way he identified 38 flower remedies that can be used alone, or in conjunction with others to treat emotional and spiritual conditions.

The flowers are divided into seven groups:Face Your Fears gives courage, reassurance and peace of mind to the fearful.Know Your Own Mind helps with feelings, and

can increase decisiveness and a sense of direction.Find Joy and Hope overcomes feelings of despondency, despair and self-doubt.Reach Out to Others helps people who feel lonely or alone to connect with others.Stand Your Ground helps those who put on a brave face become more assertive and constant.Live and Let Live aids tolerance and the ability to unwind in those who are overbearing and possessive.Live the Day gives enthusiasm and tranquillity to those who dwell too much on the past instead of enjoying the present.

In addition, Bach developed the Rescue Remedy, which is a ready-made combination of 5 flower essences that can provide comfort and reassurance for daily stressful situations.

The remedies are usually taken orally by mixing with water, although they are also available as droppers, sprays, liquid melts and pastilles. Only a few drops are required which should be taken several times a day. In some cases results can be instant, whilst in others it could take several days for any benefits to be realised.

There is little scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of Bach’s Flower remedies, and some claim that any benefits experienced are due to the Placebo effect. That said, they have now been in existence for over 80 years, and there are plenty of testimonials available on the internet giving credence to their effectiveness and healing properties.

The Alizonne Diet – what the heck is that!In an endeavour to find out exactly what the Alizonne diet was, I paid a visit to Temple Medical in West Craibstone Street, Aberdeen. Dr Sam Robson has been advertising with me for a very long time and 18 months ago invited me to come and try it out! I dismissed it as another fad. Well having seen the results on the back of the West End magazines for the last 18 months I decided that maybe this was the way forward.

I don’t really know when I started to gain weight. I was always told, you’re tall, and you can carry it! Well it was back in April that I wasn’t feeling very good about myself so stepped on the scales, yet again, in an attempt to make me wake up and smell the coffee. And another stone, yes another 14 pounds of FAT had crept on. I tell you I didn’t even notice. Yes the clothes were feeling tighter and if I had a full length mirror I might have glanced and thought – bit chunky – but I don’t, probably for that very reason.

Anyway, cutting to the chase I made an appointment to see Sam about advertising and thought I’ll enquire and find out more about Alizonne. After a tour of the new premises, very nice by the way, I was shown to the top of the building. Three flights of stairs; this is where the Alizonne treatments take place. No oxygen mask was to be seen at the top – just a fancy machine that looks like a hoover, a set of electronic scales, blood pressure monitor and some battery looking objects. Maybe this is why it’s called a medical diet.

Back to ground level Sam got talking. The fact she had a pound of fat sitting on her desk which is not particularly attractive, her positive and enthusiastic way of talking about the amazing results that were happening on a daily basis, I knew at that point she had me! She said have a think about it and then phone and book an initial consultation if you are serious about the diet. She did say that I could be put off of the diet at any time if I didn’t follow it to the “T”. I wasn’t about to be the first to be kicked off – I’ll show you I can do it – however challenging it may become.

I am not going to lie and say it is only £5 a week and you step on some scales and told you’ve lost xyz pounds. It is not a cheap option. It does not involve surgery of any kind. It does involve a HUGE COMMITMENT. A slight re-arrangement of your social activities for the initial phase and a will of steel! You will require the ability to say NO, and to mean it. Alcohol has to be given up too… but you can still have tea and coffee J

Armed with the telephone, I dialled the number – 01224 869997… Within five minutes I had an initial consultation and had parted with a chunk of money. My appointment wasn’t for another ten days… but I was determined I would start the way I meant to go on. Let the calorie counting begin…

… I have actually now started the diet and have been on it for 14 weeks at the time of going to print. I am being complimented all the time in the weight loss, shrunk several dress sizes and feel pretty good about myself.

I don’t want to say too much more in this article, but you can read my blog on the website as I have been keeping a diary. If you are interested and want to ask me about the diet, please feel free to get in touch, I’m more than happy to share my experience. My before, after and in between pictures I’ll share in the magazines when I’m complete. I am only at the end of Phase 1 and there are 7 more phases to go. Alizonne is changing my life. The weight loss is helping me live longer. The exercise is keeping me fit and active. The confidence in me has grown ten-fold and I’m getting ready to embrace Phase 2.

The top link will take you to my blog. The second link will take you to the temple medical web page and there are pictures and videos of people who have

been on the diet and their results. I would just like to say that I embarked on the diet for my own health

reasons. It will not be for everyone, but if you are serious about losing weight and have tried everything else then this might just work for you. Do not hesitate

to get in touch with me to ask any [email protected] put in the subject line

Back, Neck & Shoulder MassageA highly effective and uplifting massage using stretching and kneading to release tension, increase blood circulation and eliminate toxins.

Is a treatment of gentle stretching of skeletal muscle, major muscle groups and soft tissue, most popular and enjoyable type of massage, bringing many health benefits to the receiver. Techniques applied involve the use of hands, forearms and elbows to manipulate, warm up and stretch the superficial layers of muscles.

This treatment may be provided with top half unclothed while lying face down on the massage couch, using a base massage oil with different essential oils, or just base oil with no specific smell.

Techniques applied gradually increase circulation, warming the area worked and improving the elimination of toxins from the tissues, leaving the client feeling refreshed, revitalised and deeply relaxed.

A relaxing effect of massage, as other non-drug therapies such exercise and yoga induce a feeling of well-being and optimistic outlook on life.

Leg & Foot MassageJust what you need if you’ve been on your feet all day. Just lie back while the therapist takes away all the aches and pains.

This massage treatment uses a foot bath prior to the massage to cleanse your skin and relax your muscles, as water is known for its healing purposes. Then you would lie down on a massage couch with the bottom half of your clothes off or up. Leg and Foot Massage uses special oil an balm and is not only revitalising for tired legs and feet, but as the feet contain key energy and nerve points relating to the whole body, also harmonises and relaxes the entire body. This massage improves blood circulation, helps in preventing varicose veins and also reduces swelling and soreness in the lower leg region.

Both on offer from go health and beauty.

Foster families are ordinary people who come from all walks of life – young couples, older experienced parents or single people.

Aberdeenshire Council is looking to recruit new foster families from communities across the area to provide a home for children who need the opportunity to live with, or be supported by a stable and caring family or individual.

There are 109 active fostering households in Aberdeenshire. From April 2012 to March 2013, 152 children in Aberdeenshire were looked after by foster carers.

A special appeal is going out for permanent foster families, temporary foster families for teenagers and foster families for children with disabilities.

The council’s social work team work hard to support families to raise their children at home, but this is not always possible and at any one time there are a number of children in Aberdeenshire, from babies to teenagers, who need to be looked after away from home.

The Family Placement Service (FPS) works to find alternative family care for every child who needs it to grow, develop and realise their full potential.

The FPS has a dedicated team of staff who will support fostering applicants and their families through the process of becoming an approved foster carer.

A number of different foster care options are available:

» Temporary foster care – for children who need to be looked after over a period of weeks or months until they are able to return home or alternative arrangements made for their long term care. » Permanent foster care – for children who

need a home through to adulthood. This can be a more suitable option than adoption for older children who continue to have contact with their birth family. » Respite foster care – for children who still

live with their families but who go for a short stay to a respite fostering family to give their own family a break. This can be invaluable for children with disabilities or for young carers, for example.

All foster carers are allocated a social worker who will visit the family regularly, offer advice and be available to talk about any problems the family may be experiencing.

Every fostered child also has a social worker, whose role it is to work with parents and foster carers in planning for the child, and who has overall responsibility for the child. The child’s social worker will also make visits to the home.

Training is available to foster carers, to increase their skills and knowledge, and they are also invited to attend Foster Carer Support Groups.

Assistance is also available to foster carers if special equipment isrequired to look after a child in their home.

To find out more about how to make a positive difference to a child’s life, and about the training, financial allowances and support available, call the Family Placement Team on 01467 625555 or visitwww.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/children/fostering

A Good ReadHow Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm - Mei-Ling Hopgood

Parenting is a funny business. Everyone has an opinion on how to do things, from potty training to bedtimes - and that is only friends and family. Imagine how many different views on these everyday aspects of a child’s life exist across

the world...

Mei-Ling Hopgood’s fascinating book explores a range of ideas from across the globe, looking at how ‘normal’ practice in one culture may seem unusual, if not downright odd, in another. Hopgood writes from the parent’s perspective, and the book is part social history and part memoir as she tries to apply different strategies with her own daughter.

Whilst some of the issues here are familiar to many, from newspaper headlines and popular studies, others are genuinely new and absorbing to the reader. We all know that the French have a reputation for appreciating good food, and Hopgood’s exploration of mealtimes at a French nursery school serve to explain how children come to see food as more than just fuel. However, the ways in which Japanese children are encouraged to work conflicts out for themselves, even if that means coming to blows, and the reality of how and why Kenyan parents manage without pushchairs, are small revelations which lead us to wonder about how we perceive growing up.

Hopgood’s style is a mixture of anecdote, example and research, meaning that the book is always readable and is educational in the best of ways - you find out an awful

lot, and you don’t always realise how much you are learning. Not a bad way of thinking about teaching children, either...

The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon - Jonny Duddle

Jonny Duddle’s picture books have quickly become modern children’s classics, and this chapter book follows on from ‘The Pirates Next Door’, using familiar characters but offering a longer and more detailed read for

that awkward age when picture books are dismissed as ‘babyish’ but longer books are still a little too challenging.

Duddle’s illustrations are carefully spaced, so that there are no daunting pages of solid text: there is always at least one line drawing to pull us in. However, the text also does this brilliantly. Picking up the story from where it was left at the end of ‘The Pirates Next Door’, it begins with strange happenings in Dull-On-Sea. Firstly there are some very odd night-time visitors. Then the museum is robbed - and whilst the account of events offered by hapless security guard Arthur Poppycock is garbled, it makes one thing clear: there are pirates involved! Matilda thinks it must be time to contact her best friend Jim-Lad, and he and his family soon set sail for Dull-On-Sea to try to discover exactly what is going on...

Short enough for a rainy afternoon read, or long enough to keep younger readers guessing through a week of bedtimes, this is a fabulous little book.
