From the Pastor
Dear Friends:
Thomas Cranwell, a businessman in Columbus, Ohio, tells this story on himself:
I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money.
There are times when you feel generous, but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those "don't want to be bothered" times. "I hope he doesn't ask me for any money," I thought; he didn't.
He came and sat on the curb in front of the bus stop but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke. "That's a pretty nice car," he said quietly. He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him. His scraggly blond beard kept more than his face warm.
I said, "Thanks," and continued wiping off my car. He sat there quietly as I worked. The ex-pected plea for money never came, and as the silence between us widened something inside said, "Ask him if he needs any help." I was sure he would say "yes" but I held true to the inner voice. "Do you need any help?" I asked. He answered in three simple, but they were profound words so pro-found that I shall never forget them.
We often look for wisdom in great men and women. We expect it from those of higher educa-tion and accomplishments. I expected nothing from this "bum" but an outstretched, grimy hand. Yet, he spoke three little words that shook me that day. I had asked, expecting the worst, "Do you need any help?"
"Don't we all?" was his simple reply. I was feeling pretty high and mighty, successful and im-portant, well above a bum in the street, that is, until those three words hit me like the blast from a twelve gauge shotgun, "Don't we all?"
It was I who needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and handed him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day; it needn't have surprised me that he took none of it.
Those three little words still ring in my ears. No matter how much you have, no matter how much you have accomplished, you need help, too. No matter how little you have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, even without money or a place to sleep, you can give help. Even if it's just a compliment or nothing more than a word of encouragement, you can give that.
You never know when you may see someone who appears to have it all. But in reality, they may be waiting on you to give them what they know they don't have. A new perspective on life, a glimpse at something beautiful, respite from daily chaos.
Maybe the man I encountered was just a homeless stranger wandering the streets, but then again, maybe he was more than that. Maybe he was sent by the one who truly is perfect and wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in itself. Maybe God looked down, called an Angel, dressed him like a bum, then said, "Go minister to that man cleaning the car. That man needs help." If so, he was successful.

Mission News: Family Promise of White & Habersham
Our Mission of the Month for September is Family Promise of White & Habersham County. The Family Promise program provides a temporary solution for family homelessness be-cause it is easily replicable but also flexible enough to address the needs of each communi-ty. This program keeps families together while providing a safe environment and support to get them back on their feet. Family Promise provides extensive support during the creation of the program and a wide-range of ongoing services to the communities they serve.
Our support for this ministry will be to provide one meal each week to support not only the
families, but to help the host church who is in charge of dinner each week. Tuesday of each
week for September I will be looking for folks to prepare and deliver meals to the host
churches. There will be a sign up chart for these meals on the Mission’s Table. Please con-
sider helping Family Promise and their families by providing a delicious meal. I know it will
be greatly appreciated.

The Things I Learned in Sunday School
SATAN’S GARAGE SALE
Once upon a time, Satan was having a garage sale. There, standing in little groups were all of his bright, shiny trinkets. Here were tools that make it easy to tear others down for use as stepping stones. And over there were some lenses for magnifying one’s own importance, which, if you looked through them the other way, you could also use to belittle others, or even one’s self. Against the wall was the usual assortment of gardening implements guaran-teed to help your pride grow by leaps and bounds: the rake of scorn, the shovel of jealousy for digging a pit for your neighbor, the tools of gossip and backbiting, of selfishness and apathy. All of these were pleasing to the eye and came complete with fabulous promises and guarantees of prosperity. Prices, of course, were steep; but not to worry! Free credit was extended to one and all. “Take it home, use it, and you won’t have to pay until later!” old Satan cried, as he hawked his wares.
The visitor, as he browsed, noticed two well worn, non-descript tools standing in one corner. Not being nearly as tempting as the other items, he found it curious that these two tools had price tags higher than any other. When he asked why, Satan just laughed and said, “Well, that’s be-cause I use them so much. If they weren’t so plain looking, people might see them for what they were.” Satan pointed to the two tools, saying, “You see, that one’s Doubt and that one’s Dis-couragement — and those will work when nothing else will.”
Betty Sloop recently shared the short version of this story. I found a longer one thanks to Google. Reprinted from Inspirational Christian Stories and Poems

GWINNETT STRIPERS OUTING
The Presbyterian Men will resume our monthly dinner and fellowship on Tuesday, September 10th. We invite all men to join in a delicious meal prepared by the Pres-byterian Women and a time of study and fellowship.
The Presbyterian Men enjoyed their annual outing to the Gwinnett Stripers game on a beautiful evening with a full moon. Even with the home team loss, there was plenty of action, including a last inning bases loaded chance to pull out the win. Our own John Rogers was selected for a between the innings quiz that won him a nice gift bag. Of course, the main attraction was the chili cheese dog at the stadium (don't forget plenty of napkins).

Preschool has begun with a hallelujah! With 12 children in our class and 5 on a waiting list, we are feeling greatly blessed to be able to offer this ministry to our com-
munity! Our 8 returning children are excited to catch up with their friends and revisit their favorite activities from last year and our new little ones are busy exploring all the possibilities for learning and playing that our playroom holds. Watch future newsletters for specific information about our children and ways that you can pray for each of them as the school year progresses. We love to have donations, volunteers, and visitors! Stop by and wave from the gate when you're in the neighborhood!
Kids First Starting Back for Fall
We are excited to announce that Kids First will begin again on Wednesday night, September 4th! We cur-rently have 8 children in preschool through 6th grade planning to attend! Because we know there are many activities that make demands on kids’ time af-ter school, class begins at 3:30 with snack and homework time! This is a flexible time of fellow-ship! Get here when you can! Our evenings will al-so include dinner at 5:30, crafts/games, and a time for Bible Study concluding at 7:15. Parents and lov-ing adults are welcome to come for dinner and stay for an Adult Bible Study following. We can’t wait to get started! See you soon!

Lunch Bunch
The largest group of “Bunchers” ever gathered at the Chop-house at Lake Burton in Rabun, GA, on Wednesday, August 14. Twenty Eight of us enjoyed good food, fellowship, amid the awesome view of the lake and marina.
The Lord blessed our outing, and we are thankful to Becky Clark for driving the van. We are also thankful that we were able to make it back to the Church despite mechanical prob-lems with the van.
We will meet next month on September 17, at 1 p.m. at the Soda Fountain Café in Cleveland. We have decided to desig-nate the 3
rd Tuesday of each month as Lunch Bunch
day. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.
A Heartfelt Thank You
To Bill Naivar, Jr. for his help and persis-tence in connecting Facebook Livestream-ing to our cameras and soundboard in the sanctuary. We are so grateful!

Thank You One & All!
We’ve done it! Thanks to the generosity of our congregation we have raised enough money to have the flooring replaced in Hutcheson Hall. Special thanks to Presbyterian Women and Men for jump starting this project with (almost) matching contributions with the remainder from our wonderful members.
Installation was completed August 22nd – just in time for our new year of Wednesday Night suppers and Bible Studies.
Betty Smith, Bernice Rogers, Hugh Walters, Gypsy Smith and John Rogers formed a “committee” to select the carpet. Barbara Chambers and Joyce Naivar looked over the selection and gave it their stamp of approval.
This is an exciting time in the life of our church. Thanks to all of you and special thanks to our generous donors.
Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped move and re-set the furniture in the room so the installers could do their work.
Sincere Thanks and Blessings to each of you.
