Mrs. Dorothy Reese Jefferson ~LIVE --- LOVE --- LAUGH~
“LIVE --- LOVE --- LAUGH” is a phrasal philosophy which guided the vibrant life of Dorothy Reese
Jefferson. The charmingly bouncing baby girl was born into the ten member family of the late Jack and Alberta
Gilmore Reese on June 11, 1940, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the fifth child of the ten children.
She attended the public schools of Richland County, South Carolina, and was a proud member of the C.A.
Johnson Class of 1958. Dorothy furthered her education by attending the University of South Carolina, School
of Nursing, where she went on to pursue a rewarding career as a Registered Nurse. She began her career at the
old State Hospital, and later worked at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, where she retired in 2005.
Dorothy’s beautiful flight continued with her numerous involvements and affiliations. She was an active
member at St. Mark Baptist Church, where she served on the Pastor’s Aide, Health Ministry, and the Musical
Choir. She was a strong dedicated member of American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE),
reaching the level of Treasurer of AFGE National VA Council. Dorothy was also a devoted member of the Chi
Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated.
Mrs. Jefferson served on the board for the Reading, Arts, and Mathematics (RAM) Foundation, where she was
inducted as the first Life Board. The primary objectives of the RAM Foundation is: (1) provide a safe haven for
students (age 4-16), Monday-Friday 5 hours a day, for six weeks during the summer; (2) provide enrichment
activities to teach students how to become productive citizens of society; (3) increase the students’ reading and
math levels by 2% by summer’s end; (4) develop a good citizenship among students, their families, and their
communities; and (5) broaden the students awareness beyond the traditional environment and experiences.
Dorothy Jefferson loved to travel, as she was a world (literally) traveler and an avid bingo player. Dorothy was
truly the epitome of the philosophy, “LIVE --- LOVE --- LAUGH” for she did it all. Her legacy is an
inspiration and an encouragement to one striving to live the abundant life. Dorothy was preceded in death by:
her husband, Robert Jefferson; sons, Gerald Robinson and Maurice Jefferson.
Mrs. Dorothy Reese Jefferson leaves to cherish her precious memory: a loving son, Darryl Robinson; two
devoted daughters, Millicent (Mark) Ball and Cassandra (Jermaine) Sims; loving sisters, Myrtle Daniels, Katie
Robinson, and Melissa Penney; grandchildren, Arien Riley, Austin Robinson Moore, Genesis Robinson,
Maurice Robinson, John Jones, Jr., Chelsea Sims, Jasmine Sims, Wesley Sims, Kailah Staley, Rea Jefferson,
and Maurice Jefferson; daughter-in-law, Renee Jefferson; brother-in-law, Mack McCleary; sister/cousin,
Shirley Striblin; special friends, Shirley Reed, Sarah Evans, Karen Carradine, Alma Lee and all of the AFGE
members; a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will cherish her memory and the joy she
bought to their life.
Dorothy’s favorite Bible Verse –
“In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you.” - John 14:2
Bless you Mother, Mama, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Soror, Nurse, and Friend.
Mrs. Jefferson, We Love You!!
After Glow
I’d like the memory of me
To be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow
Of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
And bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
To dry before the sun
Of happy memories
That I leave when life is done.
