Response: Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
Just before Easter this year, the Archdiocese sponsored a Canadian called Ron Huntley to visit Brisbane and deliver keynote talks at the annual Clergy Convocation. Mr Huntley spoke extensively about his 20 years of experience using the Alpha program as a tool for evangelisation. As we listened to Ron speak over the two days, the Holy Spirit began to move in me, and I became convinced that Alpha is the perfect evangelisation tool for any parish who are motivated and desire to know Jesus in more tangible ways.
One of the challenges we have as a Catholic community is that many of us don’t really know how to engage in evangelisation, much less what it actually is. Pope Francis, however, has a knack for simplifying vaticanese language. “Every Christian is challenged,” he says, “here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelisation; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love.” Evangelii Gaudium (EG) 120.
What is Alpha? Alpha is a parish tool for sharing God’s love based on hospitality and open conversation. It is a tool to introduce people to an initial proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ – the kerygma. As Pope Francis says, “Nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful and wisdom-filled than that initial proclamation.” (EG 165). Alpha takes people on a journey often leading to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ – something we need repeatedly in our lives. It enables people to ask their questions, share ideas, build friendships and experience the love of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Alpha is for everyone; all backgrounds, all contexts, all ages.
How it works Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, usually run over 10 weeks by lay leaders on behalf of the parish. Each session looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: a meal which allows people to get to know each other; a talk on video which explores the big issues around faith; and a discussion in small groups which provides the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and to build trust and friendship.
“For many years now and in various parts of the world, Alpha has shown itself powerful in bringing faith alive in all kinds of people. Its focus is on Jesus, its method is simple, and its appeal is wide-ranging. It is also well adapted for use in Catholic communities looking to provide the kind of ignition we need if we are to become a more missionary Church.” Archbishop Mark Coleridge.
I’m excited to announce that Alpha is coming to the Caloundra Parish in 2020; first as a pilot course for the dozen people who will lead Alpha, and then offered to all members of the parish. For more information, please contact the parish office. Peace and blessings, Fr Josh.

Our Lady of the Rosary Parish School A school’s vision defines what the school seeks to be, not what it is. Alain Pitot, Area Supervisor has worked with
us in creating a new school vision that is aligned with Brisbane Catholic Education’s vision. May our new vision inspire and motivate members of the school community to work towards achieving it.
Our Vision We are child centred faith-filled learning community inspired by St Mary of the Cross MacKillop creating a better future. Our Mission Our mission is to teach, challenge and transform our community through prayer as we share with each other a love of learn-ing which is inclusive and welcoming. Our Values
Faith- inspired by our Catholic tradition, we live out our Vision in the way of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Belonging -as witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ, we act as a community which values our environment and are inclusive in our practices.
Compassion -as people of faith we nurture and foster respectful relationships, advocating for and empathising with those at the margins.
Hope - empowered by the Spirit, together with our students, staff and families we embrace the future with confidence.
In response to the call of Pope Francis to celebrate God’s gift of CREATION, OLR Church and OLR School are providing a FREE SCREENING of the innovative feature documentary titled “2040” (G) that looks to the
future but is vitally important NOW. Award-winning director Damon Gameau embarks on a journey to explore what the future would look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already
available to us to improve our planet and shifted them into the mainstream. OLR Catholic Church 61 Edmund St., Caloundra. Tuesday 12 November.

A Taste of Taizé Taizé is a tiny village in France. Since 1940, it has been home to an ecumenical community of Brothers who pray very simply through chant. During wartime, Br Roger established this community as a place of welcome for Jews who were
fleeing the Nazis. Taizé has always had a special solidarity with human suffering. Taizé is, in itself, a symbol of hope and reconciliation. The Brothers take special interest in the poor and in youth who flock to Taizé to reflect on their lives and join
in the sung prayer. Join in this beautiful prayer at OLR on Tuesday 3rd Dec at 7pm OR at Sacred Heart Church, Maleny on Wednesday 4 Dec at 7pm.
