INTRODUCTION:

National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary

year 1969 and aimed to developing student’s personality through community service. National

Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent youth Programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and

Sports, Government of India.

OBJECTIVE:

The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through the community service. The

broad objectives of NSS are to:

• Understand the community in which they work.

• Understand themselves in relation to their community.

• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving

process.

• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.

• Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.

• Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.

• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.

• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.

• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.

• Practice national integration and social harmony.

MOTTO: The motto or watchword of the NSS is “Not me but you”. It underlines that the

welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. This

express the essence of democratic living and upholds the need of selfless service and

appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also consideration for fellow human beings.

SYMBOL: The symbol of the National Service Scheme has been based on the Giant rath wheel

of the world famous Konark Sun Temple of Orissa, India. These giant wheels of the sun temple

portray the cycles of creation, preservation and release and signify the movement in life across

time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun Chariot wheel primarily

depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as

well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and

enlistment.

Swacch Bharat Abhiyan Pakhawada

Under Swacch Bharat Abhiyan Pakhawada, Cleanliness drive activity was held on 5th

of August 2016. In this NSS activity; classrooms, laboratories, lawn and library etc of college

was cleaned by the 50 NSS volunteers and 150 B.Pharm students of Dr. D. Y. Patil college of

Pharmacy, Akurdi.

Organ Donation

NSS volunteers prepared Pamphlets containing information on Organ Donation which

was distributed to parents during induction program, to students of various streams in Akurdi

campus, Market area of Akurdi and at Akurdi Railway station. NSS also organized guest lecture

by Mr. A. V. Kulkarni and Ms Mitali Mankar on the topic “Organ transplantation and organ

donation respectively”.

NSS week celebration

As a part of NSS week celebration from 24th

to 30th

Sept 2016, NSS volunteers

organized Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Road Safety Awareness campaign and Voter

Awareness Campaign. Role Play competition and Cleanliness Drive activity was done for

Swachha Bharat Abhiyan. Under Road Safety Awareness campaign, Dr. (Mrs.). Saroj Bande and

her team delivered a lecture on “First aid” and First aid demonstration. Audio/ Video clip and

Extempore Competition were organized for same. Under Voter Awareness Campaign, Audio/

Video clip Competition and Street Play were conducted in the Dr. D. Y .Patil college of

Pharmacy, Akurdi

NSS 7 days Special camp 2016-17

With the permission of NSS Department, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, Dr. D.

Y. Patil College of Pharmacy, Akurdi, Pune has organized NSS special Winter Camp from 29th

December 2016 to 4th

January 2017 at the village Kanhe, Pune. Total twenty five (25 nos.) NSS

volunteers were enrolled for this camp on the basis of undertaking and NSS regular activity. In

addition, teaching staff’s and peons were assigned duties for the safety and security of NSS

volunteers. All NSS volunteers were divided into various groups and one member from each

group was nominated as Group Leader for smooth conduction of various camp activity. During

this camp, various social activities were carried out in Kanhe village as per daily schedule.

The Sai Baba Sevadham was utilized for staying of NSS volunteers for NSS Camp in

which separate hall was available for girls. During this camp, various social projects were

undertaken and successfully completed in the Kanhe village. The details of projects are as

Day 1 Inauguration Function

On the first day of NSS camp, After inauguration, project time was utilized to make proper

staying arrangement for NSS volunteers. After that there was a preliminary meeting with the

Mrs. Rajashri Sadashiv Satkar (Sarpanch), Mr. Pradip Bhavrao Oval (Upsarpanch) , Mr. S.B.

Dhende (Gramvikas Adhikari) and numerous Gram Panchayat members. This meeting was

headed by Mr. D S. Shirode (NSS Camp Organizer) & Tejashri Deokule (Assistant Professor,

Pharmaceutical Chemistry). Moreover also interacted with the members of the Gram Panchayat.

Day 2 Geographical Survey of village & Village history

In this project activity, NSS Volunteers divided in 8 groups each containing 3 volunteers and

specified them with different parts of the village. Later on all 8 groups went to door to door of

each and every house of the village they managed in provided time. During this activity of

survey different question were asked by NSS volunteers to the villagers and they energetically

responded to all questions. Later on at evening NSS Area coordinator, delivered a seminar “NSS

Activity” and also interacted with the NSS volunteers for details. More over in the evening there

was a seminar organized for the students, the guest of the seminar was Mr. Sagar Reddy founder

of Ekta Foundation on the topic “Orphanage”. Apart from our NSS Activity, NSS volunteers

also interacted with the Handicap children and we play many games with them, it was really

different experience for us.

Day 3 Swaach Bharat Abhiyan & Tree Plantation

All streets, grave yard & diverse village premises were cleaned and garbage was put on fire by

the sweepers of the Gram Panchayat, in this way the village was cleaned by the NSS volunteers

very briskly. Later on in the afternoon there was a Tree Plantation program, which was headed

by Mr. M.T. Mohite, Dr.(Mrs) S. Mahaparale, Mrs S Rajalakshmi. In this program, total 50

plants of different species were collected from the PCMC office and 5 plants was planted at Zila

Parishad Prathmic School, next 5 plant was planted at Zila Parishad Higher School and

remaining 40 plant was planted at Society for the Education of the Crippled Center for

independent Living Naigaon.

Day 4 Health Checkup Camp

In this project ANANDRISHI SANSTHAN came over the village and with support of NSS

volunteers, 153 patients were participated in the health checkup program. Blood pressure

checkup (60 patients), Heamoglobin check up (55 patients), Blood sugar level checkup (44

patients) and blood donation (8 volunteers) camp organized at village under the Guidance of

college faculty Dr. (Mrs) P.M. Chaudhari & Mr. R.S. Karodi.

Day 5 Lak Ladki Abhiyan & Women Empowerement Rally & Streetplay

In this project, we conducted varied Street Plays starting from the Kanhe village to the Datta

Temple and Naigaon by NSS voluntees on innumerable subjects. Rally was proceeded in

Kanhegaon and Naigaon. On the occasion of Savtribhai Phule Jayati, NSS voluntees, Akshay

Shah and Priyanka Daigude delivered speech after prayers to the students of primary schools.

NSS volunteers also interacted with the Handicap children (at Society for the Education of the

Crippled Center for independent Living) and distribute snacks and celebrated birthday of

children before dinner.

Day 6 Swine Flu awareness, Dengue Awareness, Rally and Street Play

In this Day, we distributed ourselves in to 2 groups and conducted various street plays &

Awareness programmes for the villagers. We distributed into 2 groups because we have to

communicate with the whole village. We also visited to maximum homes and personally aware

the villagers regarding disease, its treatment and common precautions. Along with this schedule,

NSS volunteers also covered remaining home for survey and cleanliness drive activity at various

place.

Day 7

As it was the last day of our camp we carried out interaction camp for the whole village in which

many people eagerly interact with NSS volunteers. So it was the most successful project as lot of

people beyond our imagination came, energetically interacted and directly or indirectly support

us in various social activity. Later on Farewell Ceremony organized by the Gram-panchayat for

us in which they felicitated everyone of us & we also felicitated them. Cleanliness drive activity

was done nearby Saibaba sevadham before departing from hall of Saibaba Sevadham place, In

this way, we concluded our one week camp in Kanhegaon along with Naigaon.
