Personal Space

He became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14;30-31

“Rugged individualism” nurtured the perception that we can be completely independ-ent, totally self-reliant. One place this is clearly seen is in the replacement of the front porch with the fenced in backyard and patio. We perpetuate it, celebrating when our children proclaim: “I can do it by myself1” We embed it by claiming our personal space with communal undertakings, such as worship or community volunteering, often take a back seat.

Maybe Peter was the first “rugged individualist”- always stepping out front fo volunteer an idea and to take leadership. Peter failed to understand that when Jesus gathered twelve people around him, situating himself within a larger community, it was because he know that courage, strength, and skills don’t just appear. Jesus understood that the help that comes forth in the midst of life’s storms emerges from the beauty of community solidarity and the support we find whenever tow or three are gathered.

Page 3: we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with …...2020/08/09  · Leader: My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities

Leader: looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

People: This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

Leader: who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was re-

vealed at the end of times for your sake. People: Who has believed our message? To whom has the arm of the LORD

been revealed? Leader: Don’t be carried away by various and strange teachings, People: A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully con-

siders his ways. Leader: For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. People: But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become

God’s children, to those who believe in his name: Leader: in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving,

that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.

People: But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe. Leader: Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. People: When he had come into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus

said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They told him, “Yes, Lord.”

Leader: For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard. People: “You are my witnesses,” says the LORD, “With my servant whom I

have chosen; that you may know and believe me, and understand that I am he.

Leader: For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works. People: Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you

will in no way believe.” (3)

Thank you for worshipping with us today!

PRAYER MISSION AUGUST - HOSPICE The goal is to provide comfort care for persons facing the end of life.

The medical and staff members seek to bring symptoms of the illness under control.

The care is most frequently administered in the patient’s home but with the addition

of the Siegenthaler Center, this hospice now has four units for more intensive care

in a setting which is modern, bright, and attractive. There is a kitchen for residents

to meet with their families and make or warm up a dinner prepared elsewhere.

There are also lounge and recreational areas and various nursing care facilities.

In-home clients receive a visit from a nurse every two weeks with more frequent

attention as necessary or requested. Other services are provided as requested, e.g.

counseling for patient or family, and a visit from the chaplain. The patient is

“captain of the ship” which means they receive the kind of care they desire as

opposed to being in a less personal and medically driven environment.

Sometimes we’re tested not to sow our weak-

nesses, but to discover our strengths

This is an early reminder that you and your child can begin now to collect items that will fit in a shoe-box. This month, as you’re out shopping, pick up one or two items at a time and gradually fill up your shoebox. Gear gifts for each box to a boy or girl. Ages per shoebox are 2-4 years, 5-9 years or 10-14 years. There are brochures on the Stone Street table which give you ideas what to put in your shoebox, and what are items that you can’t put in. This is the best time of year to pick up school supplies, as they are all on sale. This year we have an anonymous donor who will pay shipping for the boxes. If you de-cide that you still wish to pay postage, it is $7, put it in the box, and put a sticky note on the outside of the box saying the postage is inside. We will have OCC shoeboxes available in the board room, over by the coffee pot, and there will be new brochures on the Stone Street table very soon. If you use a regular shoebox, wrapping is not neces-sary; however, do put a label (found on the back of the OCC brochure) denoting boy or girl and age on the shoebox and put a strong rubber band around the box. If you wish to wrap the box in brightly col-ored paper, please wrap the top and bottom of the box separately and put the label on it denoting boy or girl and age with a rubber band around it. Don’t include breakable items, liquid items, chocolate, perishable items or toy weapons, etc. We will collect them on or before November 11th or 18th. More details to follow.

State we can only accommodate 50 people for this service. If you plan on attend-

ing you will have to call or email the church to reserve a seat..

FESTIVAL UPDATE A meeting was held on June 15, 2020 by the Presbyterian Women that included the Festi-val committee, booth chairs, workers and volunteers. There was much discussion regard-ing limitations that we may encounter due to possible corona virus guidelines that may or may not be in place at Festival time this year. Many good ideas were presented as to ad-justments we might have to make. All agreed to go forward with preparing for the Festi-val as usual and to make a final decision to have or not to have the Festival at a scheduled meeting for August 31st.
