National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

Esther Nixon

With the help of Bev Poor and Watering Concepts we sent

two students to this year’s NYSF programs in Canberra and

Brisbane. Esther returned this morning to share her story,

her enthusiasm and her thanks for the opportunity to

participate in what she said was a life-changing 11 days.

Esther, now in Year 12 at Ursula Frayne Catholic College, has always loved science and always wanted to become

a doctor but by attending this residential program, the first ever held in Brisbane, she experienced many more

aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and it opened her eyes to many more

possibilities for her future. The program has been going for 35 years with 11,500 students attending to date and

includes site visits, lectures, workshops, group activities and social events. The week’s highlights for Esther

included visits to the new state-of-the-art Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) and to Griffith

University and listening to 2017 Australian of the Year, Biomedical scientist Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim,

whose work with stem cells may hold the key to a potential cure for spinal injuries. Esther said at various sessions

she got to use a stethoscope, prescribe medicine, take finger prints, inspect pond water for organisms, dissect the

lungs of a goat, develop a skin cream and discover science as its applied to many other fields, like in the food

industry, dentistry and even jewellery making. And of course the program gave her an opportunity to enjoy the

fellowship of other likeminded students and she made many new friends she’ll treasure for a lifetime.

NYSF is run by youth for youth and a small number of participants are selected each year to return the following

year to participate in the Student Staff Leadership Program. We thank Esther for coming along to share her story

and congratulate her as she is one of the chosen few who will return next year. Well done Esther! She has a

bright future ahead of her and we wish her well for her future in whatever field she chooses to pursue.

Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians (AGFR)

Aidan Wood, Mike Bermann and Jeff Stephenson

Having run a successful event ourselves last year, this year’s AGFR Tournament, the 40th annual event, was held in Murray Bridge, South Australia and our three diehard golfers returned this week to tell us all about it.

It seems holding the event near one of Australia’s best wine regions was cause enough to sample more than a few dozen bottles of the red stuff and it sounds like they may well have singlehandedly saved SA’s economy!

But despite that, or maybe because of it, they played well and brought home a few of the coveted awards. Jeff, teamed with Peter Beatie, won the Sir Clem Renouf Trophy for the Best Rotarian Team score over the 4 days and on his own won the Tasmanian Trophy for Best Stableford score over the 4 days in Division 2.

Aidan won the Queensland Trophy for 2nd Best Stableford score in Division 1.

Well done guys! A great result for WA and for the Rotary Club of Ascot. The ladies also enjoyed themselves with Tania playing in the event for the first time. Well done Tania! Our Sandgropers Trophy went to Victoria this year.

Next year’s event is to be held in Alice Springs, NT from 13th to 17th May and looks to be a fabulous opportunity to check out the heart of Australia. Interested? See Aidan for a brochure. And Congratulations to Aidan too as he was nominated as Vice President of AGFR to help bring a youth focus to future events.

Rotary Foundation Awards

The Rotary Club of Ascot might be small but

we punch way above our weight!

PDG Hugh Langridge presented PP Mike

Bermann with a Banner to acknowledge

that the Club was placed 3rd in our District

in per capita Annual Fund giving to The

Rotary Foundation for 2016-2017. Only

1,575 clubs of the 35,000 clubs worldwide

made the top 3 of their districts. We were

also one of just 4,136 worldwide to have

every member of the club contribute and

one of just 5,035 to contribute US$100 pp

via the Foundation’s Centurion Program.

I addition Hugh presented a Certificate of

Appreciation for our financial support of

End Polio Now: Make History Today

Campaign.

Well Done Ascot!
