Sorting criteria for bleached and green asparagus
The measuring principle The asparagus spears roll down a short, angled surface. While rotating, they are photographed on all sides between 5 and 21 times. This accurately scans the whole surface of a spear. The measuring process is so accurate that the individual weight of each asparagus spear is calculated within a tolerance of only +/- 3%. The asparagus is scanned in front of a constant and stationary background. This guarantees professional and extremely precise sorting.

All machines in the Espaso range will considerably improve your asparagus sorting process. On-going development in collaboration with our customers and improvements to details made the Espaso the world’s most popular asparagus sorting machine.
Whether you use an Espaso on a two-hectare farm or on a large enterprise with several hundred or thousand hectares – you will see how quickly and economically sorting is dealt with.
Good reasons for choosing an ESPASO
- sorting bleached and green asparagus- short spears can be sorted, so the asparagus tips can also be marketed- maximum sorting accuracy thanks to the use of a high-resolution measuring camera (a second camera for even better assessment – especially of the green asparagus tips - is an optional extra)- extremely gentle cleansing of the green asparagus by the use of two separate water circuits- the foot-end placing of the asparagus ensures that all spears (including the short ones) are cut off in a defined way - a network link permits fast and direct data transfer and also economical remote servicing- special solutions for customer demands were realized in many cases

INGWashing and cutting
A newly-designed cleansing system with variable pump performance washes all sides of the asparagus. Rotating under-brushes make the individual spears rotate. Powerful jets of water, positioned above and underneath, wash the asparagus and give optimal cleaning results. Three fresh-water jets carry out the final cleaning process. The tried-and-tested cutting system guarantees perfectly cut asparagus.
Wet or dry silo? The choice is yours
Data evaluation - software can be that comfortable
Every ESPASO comes with our special software, which we developed. It is comprehensive, perfected over the years and comfortable to use - so you can focus on harvesting your asparagus instead of studying complex software procedures.
1. Simple operation by touchscreen2. Sophisticated diagnostic software3. Complete accounting system for graders, cutters and fields (with ESPASO S12E, S16, S20 - 28, S32, S36, S42, S48, S60, S96, S128)4. Accounting by kgs of output or by number of spears5. Integrated accounting for contract work6. Network-ready7. Open interface to other common accounting software8. Real-time code input by barcode scanner during ongoing operation (optional accounting for ESPASO S12)9. Remote servicing and fault analysis via the integrated internet connection now possible10. Adjustment of sorting parameters at place or via the internet while the machine is operating
Water Jet CuttingThe flying knife minimises waste
The actual length of each spear is determined and its cur-vature is also taken into account. Then the spear is cut to the exact length according to the defined category by the water jet cutting robot. This procedure significantly reduces the waste of each individual asparagus spear and will markedly improve your profits!
High sorting capacity by patented turbochargerFull speed to operational success
Every ESPASO is designed to offer maximum sorting capacity. Optimised work processes, intelligent features such as the turbocharger, water jet cutting or integrated weighing make every ESPASO a high performance system for the sorting of green and white asparagus.
Exact weighing down to the gramincreases the sorting performance
The quality and weight of each individual spear are determined by measuring cameras. The individual spears are then brought together in bunches in removal trays on the basis of the previously specified weight categories. Each tray is equipped with scales, constantly checking the pre-determined bundle weight tolerances in communication with the sorting calculator. The result is an optically appealing bundle with all bundles having the same length, diameter and head quality.

also recognises hollow spears
An additional camera (optional) improves recognition of hollow white asparagus spears.
As a result of the different early-harvesting methods, at the beginning of the season in many companies there are periods in which there is a significantly high proportion of hollow asparagus spears. In some cases, this is more than 40% of the harvested quantity.
With its existing software, Neubauer Automation separated the hollow spears according to the following characteristics: double spears, ovality and club-shaped. However, the straight but hollow spears were not recognised in this way.
Now the ESPASO is able to reliably recognise straight hollow spears during the sorting process and to sort them out efficiently. An additional camera which focuses on the foot of the spear recognises the hollow spears, which have a visible opening at the foot end, and reliably sorts these out.

Many discount grocery stores have specified a length of 22 cm for white asparagus in their product range, although a new EU standard abolishes this requirement. This means that the market is divided into asparagus lengths of up to, and over, 22 cm.
The producers of asparagus deal with this by cutting the raw asparagus into, for example, lengths of up to 24 cm, and washing and sorting it. Then, in a second stage, they shorten and pack the sorted asparagus in accordance with the order.
Neubauer‘s Aspa Cut optimises this shortening process. It cuts pre-sorted asparagus spears at a speed of up to 10.8 metres per minute, and considerably increases order processing.
A comprehensive range of accessories such as roller conveyors, roller unit curves, conveyor belts, worktables and scales from our range of products ensures an even more efficient flow of goods.
Technical data
• Overall length of Aspa Cut : 9 m
• Length of loading section: 3.5 m
• Head and foot belt ensure exact cutting length
• Length of removal section: 4.5 m
• Oil-free toothed belt technology transports the asparagus
• Our tried-and-test cutting technology with a high knife rotating speed creates a precise, straight cut
• Integrated section conveyor (optional)
• Speed is infinitely variable from 5.5 to 10.8 metres per minute

ASPAWAAG introduces a new era in weighing asparagus. It combines the turbocharger, a cutting unit and exact weight registering to make the world‘s most intelligent weighing unit.
The measurement principleOur tried-and-tested turbocharger technology feeds the asparagus to the weighing line. A cutting unit is positioned upstream of this and can be used as an option if the asparagus is to be given a fresh cut edge.
The filled trays are conducted over a throughput weighing unit. The weight of each tray is registered three times, which gives a secure average value. The filled trays are then placed on 8 belt scales.
The calculator now knows both weights and fills the belt scales with the remaining quantity until the tar-get weight with the pre-set tolerances is reached. The asparagus is then transported to the removal tray and can be put manually into a flow pack or bundling unit. If the target weight is either not reached or exceeded, the asparagus is automatically transported to the return belt and to the renewed weighing process.
