Births

Ogechi Wallace welcomed a daughter, Chelsea on October 16th. Greg Overkamp welcomed a daughter, Loralei on November 25th.

Coming Soon — G+P’s Tysons Office.

In February 2016, our McLean office will be moving to a newly renovated office space in Tysons, VA. Just moments away from the Silver Line’s Spring Hill Metro station, the new site is in the heart of a growing urban community filled with the region’s major shopping and dining destinations. G+P col-laborated closely with Steelcase and their local representative — Arbee Associates — to develop a smartly-configured floor plan de-signed to promote worker productivity in a collaborative environment in 9,000 sf. The relocation is part of our latest means to bet-ter serve our clients and employees as the firm continues to grow.

This year’s Canstruction theme is transportation. G+P’s Can-estoga wagon design is based on the Conestoga wagon from the colonial era, 1750-1850. Conestoga wagons were used to transport food and other products from rural communities to cities throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Eventually the Conestoga wagon made its way across the Appalachians to the Ohio River Valley, but soon became obsolete as more railways came into service. During its time, it was an essential tool for the settlement of the American colonies.

Nov. 22 — Canstruction Competition

2015. Build-out for this year’s Canstruction Competition took place at the National Build-ing Museum. G+P won Juror’s Favorite

for 2015, and will go on to compete at the National Canstruction event through submis-sion of photographs to a national panel of ju-rors. A huge thanks to all participants and a special thanks to Lam Vuong for leading and coordinating this exciting endeavor. Our involvement with Canstruction is primarily building and donating the can goods to the Capital Area Food Bank.

ering. Please plan on attending our next All Staff Meeting on Thursday, 12/17 from 3-5 pm with a festive G+P Holiday Gathering im-mediately following the meeting.

Industry Events

Nov. 18 thru 20 — Greenbuild Internation-

al Conference and Expo 2015, Washing-

ton, DC. The biggest event in sustainable building kicked off on November 18th at the Washington Convention Center. This year’s Monumental Green event included three days of uplifting speakers, unmatched networking opportunities, showcases, LEED workshops and green building tours — including G+P’s Brookland Middle School, and the Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus (led by Paul Bradshaw and Amy Upton). Next year’s Icon-ic Green conference is on October 5-7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Oct. 26 — Residential Development 101:

Creating Value After the Buy. The ULI RE 101 Team hosted a panel at Studio Theater on DC’s Design and Development. Martin Ditto — Ditto Residential’s President and CEO — opened with a speech on the interconnect-edness of design and development. The dis-cussion focused on “how the right team and designs can solve on-the-ground problems and allow savvy developers to build high-end products and address field questions on boutique development.” See page 7 for more info.

Sept. 26 — Sprucing Up the Living Class-

room at the Washington Youth Garden. Eleven volunteers and their families came together at the US Arboretum’s Washing-ton Youth Garden for an Outdoor Classroom Work Day. They rebuilt nature worktables and a sandbox, spruced up the kids’ stage with stairs and curtains, and salvaged an un-used planter bed. A special thanks to Amy Upton, Kiley Wilfong Cullen, and Justin Cul-len for spearheading our volunteer effort this year. We had a great turnout of G+P staff (Mel Thompson, Blanca Flores, Will Morri-son, Carly Rickerson, Jen Fowler, Kat School-ey, Zak Schooley and their families). Thanks to all who joined!

The event was part of a larger global move-ment, the Green Apple Day of Service, an ini-tiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council that brings together advocates from around the world and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects.

Founded in 1971, the Washington Youth Garden provides a unique, year-round envi-ronmental science and food education pro-gram for DC youth and their families. Using the garden as a living classroom, they teach participants to explore relationships with food and the natural world. Check out their website for volunteer information at www.washingtonyouthgarden.org

Oct. 14 — Gardening for a Cause: Improv-

ing Biofilters at Monticello High School. Our goal for this Green Apple Day Event was to improve an existing biofilter at Monticel-lo High School. Grimm + Parker volunteers planted a variety of groundcover plants in the biofilter to increase the effectiveness of the filtration process. For maximum envi-ronmental friendliness, we only used native plants that survive with very little care to keep the biofilter attracting pollinators and decreasing pollution for many years to come!

Thanks to William Abrahamson for spear-heading the event in Charlottesville! He, Pa-tricia Jessee, Liz Chapman, Steve Hoffman, and Jonathan Moore took part.

US Arboretum’s Washington Youth Garden — AfterThe Day of Service provided an opportunity for healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places. This is G+P’s 7th Green Apple Day of Service project and we are already looking forward to next year’s event!

Aug. 24 — Lothian Elementary School

dedicates their brand new building! Lo-thian’s new design addresses key issues identified during an initial feasibility study — also completed by G+P. We worked closely with Anne Arundel Public Schools to place the administration office at the building’s main entrance for maximum supervision, and locate the early childhood classrooms to the front of the building closest to the main entrance and administration office. The de-sign provides programmatic spaces that sup-port maximum flexibility and multi-use. The building is tracking LEED® Silver.

Sustainability and LEED®

North Frederick Elementary School is

now LEED® Silver! The newly LEED-certi-fied facility demonstrates FCPS’s commit-ment to public education as an investment in our future. North Frederick is one of three FCPS Elementary Magnet sites serving aca-demically gifted students in grades 1-5. Con-gratulations to the North Frederick ES team!

Willow Elementary School, Los Angeles, CA. Designed by HMC Architects. The 650-student school was designed to connect the interior of the 26-classroom K-5 school to the outdoors. One of the project’s key objectives was to maximize playground areas on the 3.9-acre urban site in South Gate, Calif. A single point of access provides street identity and increased security for the campus. Photo: ©Lawrence Anderson.
