Standards and technology

As standards evolve, and clients demand higher levels of reliability and safety, Eaton helps you meet market demands with the latest in technology. Whether it’s meeting the latest requirements of IEC 61439 for low voltage switchgear or addressing client’s safety concerns while working near medium voltage equipment, you can rely on Eaton’s 100 year heritage and leadership in switchgear design.

Our licensed platforms include complete third party certification to IEC 61439 for low voltage systems and IEC 62271-100 and 200 for medium voltage. These new standards are becoming a requirement in many geographies and are being adopted by many companies to address areas of reliability and safety, early.

Partnering with Eaton as a licensed panelbuilder has many advantages.

• Reduce investment in equipment design andtesting. Meeting the new standard requires design verification testing which can cost thousands of dollars for each tested combination. Testing not only can be financially prohibitive, but it can slow time to market and present many technical challenges. As an Eaton licensee, we provide all of the necessary test certificates and manufacturing information eliminating the need for these tests.

• Industry leading technology provides a specification advantage in a crowded and competitive marketplace. As we introduce new products or features, like our Arcflash Reduction Maintenance SystemTM, our partners will be the first to have access.

Personnel safety and arc flash

Personnel safety continues to be one of the key concerns for end users in the market today. In the past several years, many safety standards have been adopted around the world to address the problems related to arc flash including NFPA 70E in North America, TR 61641 and IEC 62271-200 in Europe and other local standards like Annex ZD in Australia. Eaton has answers to address all of these standards and offers both products and services important to the user. Our licensed platforms have been tested and exceed the requirements of the standards, that’s just one step towards building a safe facility. The standards address the performance of the equipment during an arc flash, with all of the doors securely latched or closed, but in reality most accidents occur when the equipment is being serviced. At Eaton we take a proactive approach of “prevent rather than cure” when addressing arc flash hazards.

First, we recommend a system study to determine the risk classification where the equipment is installed. Our engineering services team offers this analysis in addition to other power systems studies to improve system reliability and safety. By partnering with Eaton you have access to one of the largest teams of power systems engineers in the industry.

Second, we have patented features that limit or prevent risky activity. For instance, on xEnergyTM XW, a light indicates the presence of hazardous voltage inside the cubicle, interlocks prevent removal in an energized state and an IP21 barrier prevents access until the unit is safely de-energized. On our xGearTM medium voltage equipment, positive interlocks on the grounding switch and cubicle doors prevent unsafe operation.

Third, to further increase personnel safety, we offer intelligent products which can limit the amount of arc flash by reducing breaker clearing times during maintenance. Our Arcflash Reduction Maintenance SystemTM, available in our medium voltage relays, low voltage air circuit breakers (ACB), and molded case circuit breakers (MCCB) is a unique offering only available from Eaton. This maintenance mode employs the use of a separate analog circuit in the breaker’s trip unit to reduce clearing times while work is being performed on the switchboard. This device has proven to reduce incident energy levels by nearly 50% and is more cost effective and reliable than other solutions like fiber optic sensors and relays.

Support program

Members of the panelbuilder program have preferred access to a team of experts focused on switchboard design, manufacturing methods and quality. This team will assist with the initial assembly line set up, assembly of production samples and training. Also, the team will be there to support you for project design, technical support questions and manufacturing issues. They will keep your team up to date on the latest advancements in xEnergy and xGear during quarterly visits and help maintain a superior level of quality.

Flexible licenses

Licensing technology has many advantages and Eaton offers more flexibility. Choose between assembly or manufacturing licenses. Both offer technical support and access to the latest technological advancements, but require different levels of expertise and investment. We have a licensing program to fit your individual needs.
