TIMEISTICKING I can still remember those days (particu-larly during the years in primary school) where I spend the year-end holidays not doing any-thing. Everyday it’s the same routine; wake up real late, scavenge for food (if my mom hasn’t prepared any), turn on the TV and sit in front of the screen till my mom comes back for her lunch break. Lunch is enjoyed in front of the TV. Soon my mom leaves for work and she’ll come back to find me still watching TV but maybe in a different position. Then it’ll be dinner time, after that? You guessed it, TV time! However this time my whole family will be there which is way better than watching TV on my own.

You can imagine my life is like a film turning from bright colours into a dull black and white. I can practically tell you the TV pro-grammes running from Monday till Sunday with-out having to think; even the time that they are aired. Gradually, I lost count of the dates in the calendar. Remember the days in primary school where they make you write the date at the top right corner of our workbooks whenever we do the exercises? Well, without that I was lost in a time warp. I had no idea what day it was nor the dates. The only thing that reminded me that a week has passed by was when the usual car-toons are not on and the weekend cartoons are on. Life was as carefree as it can ever be. Then Christmas is over and I’ll start re-adjusting my waking hours. Those were the days.

Time seem to pass more quickly as we grow older. Gone are the days where the lon-gest holiday is the year-end holiday. Now it’s the summer holidays. Well for us anyway. What does it feel like? Is it still the same as before? Lost in time, living through the days dreamily? Half-awake, half asleep? I don’t know about you but I’ve come to my senses. I really take time more seriously now. To tell you the truth the first few weeks of the holiday was a bore. I had a routine but it was not the one I had when I was young. This time it was helping out in the house, all the chores and trying to get myself back into shape. It was really BORING and I can’t stand

it. My next step? Get a job and I got it. With a job you’d think my life wouldn’t be a bore anymore but I tell you it’s still as rigid as before. I don’t know why, maybe it’s just me. I was so bored I had the intention to get another job just to fill up the few hours where I’m still free. Lucky for me, I got the second job. Yes, you heard me right. I worked day and night just to fill up the time I had during my holidays. Well, it’s not a holiday anymore now is it. Boy was I glad I had two jobs. Sure I had to rush from one place to another but I’m telling you I think it’s worth it. I didn’t work for the money; I worked because I wanted to have the feeling of satisfaction that none of my time was wasted doing nothing. I was really living in frenzy and my parents think I’m a nut-case. Soon it was time for me to quit

my job and start packing.

Did I regret it? No, not at all. I had the time of my life. The first job has helped me understand kids more and I understood myself more. I had a great time with the kids and it was really amazing how they changed my life for the better. I’ll miss them so very much. My second job? I learnt what business is all about to some people and I made new friends of my age. Want to know something bizarre? One of my col-leagues is actually someone I met in National Service. It’s a small, small world.

What was it? Oh yeah, I was supposed

AIMANHad a good summer? That was the common phrase thrown to us once the term has started. This is normal as students have to accept that their main business is to study and apart from that is to enjoy the holiday. This time, there will be no long written points about education as I just want to provide simple notes for everybody. They are:

to talk about going back to school. Well what I really wanted to say after all those crap is now that we are back, we should really give some thought to what we want to do with the time which was given to us. Going back to school is not much different from having a break from school. Time is still there, 24 hours is all there is. No more no less. What are you going to do with your 24 hours? I know I don’t want to spend it like I did when I was young and stupid. Yes, I admit I was really stupid to be sitting be-fore the TV for the whole day. What to do now? Well for starters, get cracking on what’s impor-tant in your life and the rest will take its course.

I honestly hope that we’ll all find our path. And I personally hope that I will not get wrapped up in the Time Warp again.

BACK

TOSCHOOL

In fact, it is not a big deal when you come across the phrase of ‘going back to school’. Psychologically, we may think that it is not a pleasant business to do, however, we have to accept that it is the reality. Perhaps, it will be more useful if we just take everything lightly and let everything moves with the flow. Therefore, do utilise our time wisely and do not take every-thing for granted as luck does not knock twice on our doors. So, do study hard and strive for excellence. Chiao!

It’s time to go back into the waking-up-late-rush-ing-to-lecture life again. After those mind-tiring hours of studies, it’s time to sit back and relax for a movie! Here’s a list of movies with univer-sity theme. Sounds boring? Don’t worry! There must be one which appeals! Enjoy!

Soon he and his other loser friends take over a disused mental institution where they gather as a self-governing student anti-elitist com-mune. A comedy but shows not all who fails to enter college fails in real life as well.

Cocky, popular high school student Landon Carter is the big man on campus at Beaufort High School until a hazing incident leaves a fellow student paralyzed. Sentenced to community service and membership in his school’s drama club, Landon is forced to seek help from Jamie Sulliva, the conservative, religious, plain-Jane daughter of the town’s Baptist minister. When the two students begin to fall in love, Landon struggles with the drop in popularity that his new friendship brings, while Jamie is forced to deal with her strict father and a secret that she’s keeping from her schoolmates.

Starring Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles and Maggie GyllenhaalSet in 1953, Mona Lisa Smile tells the story of Katherine Watson, a young art history professor at Wellesley College, an all-female campus with a prestigious reputation for academic excellence. Unfortunately for free-minded Berkeley grad Wat-son, her East Coast teaching stint comes during a less-progressive time that finds most of her students -- among them Betty Warren, Joan Brandwyn, and Giselle Levy -- more interested in nabbing a good husband than achieving scholastic and intellectual growth. Watson challenges her students and the Wellesley faculty to think outside of the current mo-res of the community and redefine what it means to be a success; meanwhile, she tries to come to terms with her own heart’s desires.

Starring Sean AstinYou can’t knock the inspiring true story of a col-lege football underdog. Don’t even try it. Sean Astin shows how hard work and determination paid off for Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger – an undersized kid from a blue collar family who got a chance from the football coach at the University of Notre Dame.

Starring Robin Williams, Ben Affleck and Matt DamonA touching tale of a wayward young man who struggles to find his identity, living in a world where he can solve any problem, except the one brewing deep within himself, until one day he meets his soul mate who opens his mind and his heart. A janitor at MIT, Will Hunting has a gift for math and chemistry that can take him light-years beyond his blue-collar roots, but he doesn’t realize his potential and can’t even imagine leaving his childhood Boston South End neighborhood, his construction job, or his best friend. To complicate matters, several strangers enter the equation: a brilliant math professor who discovers, even envies, Will’s gifts, an empathetic shrink who identifies with Will’s blue-collar roots, and a beautiful, gifted pre-med student who shows him, for the first time in his life, the possibility of love. A truly inspirational story.

18Chinese martial arts training would not be com-plete without the use of weapons. This article is part 2 of a 3 part series which will attempt to give a brief description on the well known 18 weapons of Chinese martial arts

As the name inplies, the Chinese axe or Fu is used primarily for slashing attacks. This example of double axes would be used on foot whereas there are also bigger versions of them which were used on horseback.

Similar with the previous weapons, the Yue is also used primarily for slashing attacks, except that it is also equipped with a spear tip at the end of the blade and the end of the handle, making it a cross between the axe and the spear. The long-handled yue used to be a battlefield weapon in ancient times until it was eventually demoted only for ceremonial purposes (eg: symbol of military might) due to its rather heavy weight.

The Chinese battle hammer or Chui is used for dull, smashing attacks. It could come as a long-handled single weapon or be dual-wielded. Due to its sheer heavy weight, much strength is required when wielding this weapon. It’s head could come in many shapes. The example shown is of melon shape, also known as “melon hammers”.

Page 16: Wayang Kulit 4th

The Chinese fork or Cha was initially a hunting and fishing tool which later doubled up as a combat weapon. It has a variation of 3 prongs (as shown by this picture) or 2 prongs. In cultural & acrobatic performances, the fork could be spun around the wielder’s body without the wielder grabbing the handle, in a show known as the “flying fork”

In appearance, the Chinese mace or Jian looks similar to Jian, the Chinese long sword mentioned in part 1 of this series (in fact, their pronunciation are similar). However, it is actually a dull and heavy weapon meant to inflict blunt damage via smashing attacks. This weapon is usually dual wielded and is so power-ful that it could smash right through metal armor and helmets as well as breaking opponents’ weapons, especially when used on horseback.

As the name itself implies, the whip or Bian har-nesses the weapon’s whipping motion for offensive and defensive purposes. The Chinese whip could be made of leather or short metal rods which are chained together, though the latter is more often used for combat. The whip could be flung to strike, hook, and bind an opponent, as well as hitting around obstacles eg: opponent’s block. A dart is of-ten attached at the end of the weapon to inflict more damage. Variations of this weapon included the 3 section whip, 7 section whip, and 9 section whip (as shown by this picture)

GOEASTYOUNGMANAn excerpt from Inside Kung Fu magazine (2011)

http://www.insidekung-fu.com/content/view/198/37/

The most surprising thing to learn, though, is that this 7-year-old has won first place in over 40 kung-fu competitions. You would be wrong if you assumed he is some sort of martial arts prodigy. Instead, Andre has harnessed what many would consider a disability and turned it into championship gold.

Andre’s high energy level hasn’t always been considered a blessing. In fact, he had so much nervous energy that when he was three years old his muscles would tremble if he had to sit still for more than a few minutes. The doctors diagnosed Andre with a severe case of hyperactivity and explained that he would probably need to be medi-cated once he reached school age. One possible solution was intense exercise spread throughout the day. This would allow the energy to be burned off and increase the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine—both of which play leading roles in regulating brain activity. Hoping to avoid medication, his parents decided to give exercise a try.

Martial Arts Epiphany At first, the exercise consisted of little more than running around the local junior college track several times a day. Then one evening, while chan-nel surfing, Andre’s father came across a Jackie Chan movie. Andre sat mesmerized for a few min-utes and then blurted out, “I want to do that!”

Having no background in martial arts, his father, Kenn Magnum, visited local kung-fu schools. At first, no one would take Andre because he was

only three. Eventually wing chun master Richard Loewenhagen met Andre and made an exception. Andre trained in the wing chun program for about a year before his parents left Chandler, Ariz., and moved to Phoenix. Andre’s young age again be-came a problem when searching for a new kung-fu school. In general, many American kung-fu schools don’t accept students until they are six. Once again, they found a teacher willing to make an exception for their hyperactive son. Master Joseph Eagar of Eagar’s Kung Fu Academy gave Andre an opportu-nity, and Andre did not disappoint.

Eagar’s patience was endless. He taught An-dre northern style shaolin kung-fu as well as modern wushu. Andre enjoyed Eagar’s teaching style and quickly formed a bond with him. Even though the curriculum was demanding and challenged Andre, his need for exercise ensured that he practiced for several hours each day.

Andre seemed to show promise in kung-fu, but Eagar’s school didn’t have a ranking system in belts, sashes or any other titles to designate stand-ing within his program. Nor did the school have other children to compare him to, so his parents had no idea that their son might have some real talent in the Chinese martial arts. They did, however, think he might be more motivated if he had a reason to train hard, so they signed him up for a local martial arts competition. His father worked with him ev-ery morning and afternoon and felt that Andre was ready. They were still pleasantly surprised when he won first place. Andre was exhilarated by the entire experience and wanted to compete more.

7-Year-Old Andre Mag-num wows monks at The Shaolin Temple. The first thing you notice about Andre Xavier Magnum is his untamable, flaming, orange hair. The next thing you notice is his conta-gious amount of energy.

Talent Comes Through Eagar began to work with Andre individu-ally as he trained and competed in larger, regional competitions. Andre continued to rack up win after win, and it became obvious that he displayed some genuine talent.

When Andre turned five, Eagar allowed him to join the adult demo team. Andre took the stage

during the Chinese New Year celebration, other cultural events and even movie openings. Kung-fu began to dominate the family’s time and thoughts, but it was Eagar’s many stories of legendary kung-fu masters and exotic tales of Chinese history that fueled Magnum family’s interest in China. So when they met a performing shaolin monk at a show in Phoenix, and he invited Andre to train in China, they were receptive. It was decided that Andre would travel to the official school of the Shaolin Temple, Tagou, and that he would stay and train for three months. At only six, Andre was the youngest West-erner to ever train there, and nobody knew for sure how well he would do. Adding to uncertainty, An-dre’s mother was unable to arrange a leave from work; so Andre and his father went without her.

Even though the family had been reading about China, they hadn’t actually learned to speak Chinese. Additionally, the rural Chinese lifestyle was much different than the high-rise condo in Phoenix they called home. The Tagou staff did its best to make it comfortable for Andre; in fact, at first, they

made it too comfortable. Andre’s first instructor treated Andre as if he was at a summer camp, and Andre found the training easy and boring. The sepa-ration from his mother began to take its toll, and the boy began to emotionally regress. After two weeks, depression overtook him as he would come from class and sit in the hotel room curled up, sucking his thumb. His father did his best to cheer him up, but finally decided that Andre was still too young for the

experience and made plans to return to the United States the next week. However, Andre was already scheduled to compete in a local kung-fu competi-tion, so they decided to compete before returning to the U.S.

Rude Awakening The day of the competition arrived and a school reprentative took them to the staging area. It was unlike any kung-fu competition they had ever seen. There were thousands of competitors and tens of thousands of spectators. While waiting to compete, the press found them and began to ask questions in Chinese. One of them knew a little English and began to translate. They both answered questions for what seemed like hours before Andre’s time came to compete. When Andre went on stage, he showed no apprehension and performed flaw-lessly. The crowd of thousands stood and roared its approval. Andre beamed as be bowed to the judges and the sadness disappeared. They spent the weekend touring local temples and historical sites;

Page 19: Wayang Kulit 4th

however the competition had brought Andre’s back hunger for kung-fu. His cheerful demeanor returned, and he began playing with other children. The com-petition completely turned him around, and he was not about to leave now.

The easy of Andre’s training was still frustrat-ing him, he complained that he was being treated like a baby and wanted to be taken more serious. The school agreed to provide him with a new, more serious instructor. If Andre had known in advance who would replace his instructor, he probably would have never complained. His new instructor was master Li Jie, who was known for two things: first, being the most aggressive fighter at the school and second, his lack of patience. He wasn’t particularly fond of children either. Li Jie had a stern demeanor, a disciplined style, and a demand for perfection, but Andre thrived on his fast pace and aggressive shaolin kung fu. Kung-fu wasn’t the only thing Li Jie demanded of Andre; he also expected Andre to understand him, even when he spoke Chinese. So Li Jie began to teach Andre Chinese as well. Even with his new instructor de-manding every ounce of Andre’s en-ergy, he still managed to spend the evenings play-ing basketball with the Chinese tourists who visited shaolin. When he was in public at the temple, large crowds asked him to perform. They also wanted him to pose with them for pictures.

Andre was always happy to do so; but one weekend the crowds had grown so large and unre-lenting that as much as Andre loved to perform, he became too tired to continue. To avoid the crowds of tourists, he and his father left the main road and climbed through the forest to get to a local restau-rant without being seen.

The three months quickly came to an end and they finally returned to the United States. There was a competition in Las Vegas, scheduled the same weekend that they returned and Andre was excited to have the opportunity to show off his new skills. Neither Andre nor his parents expected he would now face any difficult challengers. To their surprise, as the competitors began to assemble, a muscular Chinese man stepped from the crowd dressed in shaolin robes. His stride reflected the confidence of a man who was the real deal. And walking next to him, wearing the same robes and serious expression was a young boy Andre’s age. Whispers circulated through the auditorium that the

man had come from shaolin nd he had opened a local school. The boy with him was not only his most talented student, but also his son. Andre was ex-cited by the prospect of competing against someone who could relate to all that he had been through. The competition went well, with Andre taking first in traditional forms and second to the other shaolin-trained boy in long weapons.

Since then Andre has returned to his home in Arizona and to Eagar. As he travels and com-petes, he has attracted the attention of other kung-fu

masters from around the United States who have taken an interest in him and help to train him while visiting their towns. East Coast masters such as Clarence Burris and Lu Xiaoling train Andre when he travels to the area to compete. West Coast schools such as master Patti Li’s Wushu West and China’s master He Jing De have also helped train Andre when he’s visits their areas. Even other kung-fu masters in Andre’s hometown of Phoenix have taken an interest and generously given their time and friendship too Andre. Both master Jinheng Li and master Kenney Perez have spent time training the young kung-fu champion.

Andre still maintains a busy, three times a day, training schedule, so he is home schooled by Samantha O-Yang, a teacher from Taiwan whose credentials include a master’s in linguistics. He also receives coaching in gymnastics from Juan Fernan-dez of Ultimate Gymnastics.

Each year, Andre and his father return to shaolin where they live and train for the summer. Though he continues to train in kung-fu, Andre’s dream is to one day become a robotics engineer. Given the drive he’s already displayed should prob-ably expect excellent kung-fu robots in our future.

Life is the most thrilling mystery. We would not know what will happen tomorrow or the day after it. The moment you are living now is yours; don’t worry about yesterday or tomorrow. Live and enjoy the every moment of your life and do whatever you want to, break the boundaries and the world is all yours. The hidden secrets of life will only revealed if we experience every sweet and bitter moment with open heart. My life is a lifetime mystery for me. Its already eighty years I’m living in this world, time passes so fast and sometimes it’s make me ponder what have I done along this long period of live and how I revealed every mysteries in coping with chal-lenging life. Sitting on the pearl white armchair in the corner of my very own garden, the tapping sound of water pouring from saraswathi’s statue fountain run inner towards my ears creating a peaceful feeling in my deep heart. This is the daily routine for an old chap like me spending the remaining bits of my life peacefully under the umbrella of lifelong satisfaction and happiness. I will only leave my favourite arm-chair when I smell the aroma of food from the win-dows of my kitchen. My daughter, Aruna is a won-derful cook as her mother is. No wonder why she always accompanied her mum whenever she was cooking since small. Her food undeniable superbly tasty and she knew every aspect of my appetite.

As I looking at the blue sky, my thoughts flew sixty years back to the day when I firstly met my wife, Anjali under the breathtaking scenery of Himala-yas. She was so beautiful and attractive, her sweet smile enough to make a guy like me to fall in love at first sight. And that’s what happened to me. I was attending a meeting regarding a social community work for poor in Katmandu, to fill my leisure time apart from tiring meeting; I would walk along the narrow streets of Champak which will end in the shore of a small lake with the backdrop of snowy hilltops of Himalayas. I still remember the moment I arrived at the shore of the lake, the cool refreshing breeze slapped slowly and gently on my face creat-

Jasha was happy that she can go again to that gar-den because she fall in love with garden very much. That evening after class she took her bicycle and went to the garden. It is the most beautiful feeling on earth to be in the garden. As she was watering the plants and cleaning the garden she found a photo of her lecturer and a young man. He was a very good looking man. Suddenly, when Jasha turned the same young man in the photo was standing behind her.

She smiled and said hello. He smiled and intro-duced himself. “Hello, I am Kevin. You must be Jasha right?

Jasha just smiled. Since that day they both become a very good friend. Every day after class, Jasha will spend her time with Kevin. They both snaps photos and play games. Jasha and Kevin also share many stories together. Her lecturer Mr. Smith is Kevin’s father. He loves Kevin so much and the secret gar-den was built for Kevin when he was 4 years after his mother passed away in an accident. Since that day Kevin spends time reading, studying and play-

ing a special sensation that released all my tension and tiredness in just a wink of eyes. That the place where Anjali was standing alone looking at the lake, I could see the sadness in her face, and look in her eyes that earn for freedom from some kind of un-pleasant shackle.

I walked slowly towards her and greeted her. As she frowned at me, I saw tears gliding from her glassy eyes. I asked her why she was crying and far in my mind, it kept me wondered what such a pretty young woman doing alone in that place, as that place hidden from public. It took her five minutes to voice out and answers my question. She told me that she wanted to run away from the suffering of poverty that had stricken her life since she was small. With-out proper education qualification, her life turned into misery and suicide is the last option she had. I listened to her a story as an audience listening totheir favourite singer sang the song of life. It may sound silly, but that’s the truth. I fall in love in the very first moment I saw her. I tried my best to keep her relaxed and gave her some motivated and aspir-ing words that may keep her away from her last deadly option.

Days passed so fast in Katmandu and everyday I yearned to meet Anjali once again but no matter how far I searched, I couldn’t find her. I still remem-ber the last day I’m in Katmandu, with a small hope and determination, I visited the lake. As I walked with unwilling heart of sadness to leave such a beautiful place, I came across the most exciting moment in my life; I saw Anjali sitting on the bank of the lake, the girl that robbed my heart was sit-ting there alone. I walked elegantly towards her, and greeted her as I greet her five days before, but at that moment there was a slight difference in her pale face, she was smiling and I could see a lively vibes of happiness in her eyes. We sat there for few hours and talked everything and anything that came across our mind at that time. Throughout the mo-

ment I acted clumsily because I quite uneasy to act and negotiate normally with burden and torture of love in my heart. I sacred to tell her but I really wanted her to know that I fall in love and wanted her to be partner who shares happiness, sadness, entertainment , comedy and sweetness of life that she never had before with me. Suddenly, pause stricken our conversation, I broke the silence by expressing my hidden feelings towards her. There was a drastic change on her face and she seemed to think for a while in silence and full of concentra-tion. The whole world seems to stop and I looked straightly at her eyes waiting for her answers. She broke the suspense with a smiling face and that was the symbol for her agreement. At that mo-ment my heart applauded with disbelieves and satisfaction. At last I found my suitor in world far away from my home. Now Anjali is no more, it’s al-ready five years she left Aruna and me. Although, she passed away, but her memories still fresh alive deep inside my heart. Remaining bits of my life will spent with hermemories. Life is full of mystery, we don’t know when we will meet someone special and losing them. Love and memories are the elements that keep them alive by our side forever.
