LUMINOSITY YOUTH SUMMIT 2019
The Luminosity Youth Summit is a dynamic national forum
which encourages young people to explore
dangerous ideas for success. This year 14
students from Wauchope High gained
sponsorship to participate in this three day
event, which was held at the Glasshouse in
Port Macquarie. Compassion, Vision and
Innovation were the focus themes for the 2019 summit.
Feedback from the event was extremely positive, with students finding many of
the sessions “inspirational” and “motivating”.
A huge vote of THANKS to the local businesses and charities who gave financial assistance to our students. We would like to acknowledge the following sponsors: Wauchope Rotary Club, Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy, Wauchope High School P&C, Discover Magazine, Holiday Coast Credit Union (Regional Australia Bank), Headspace and Mid North Coast Area Health.

Combined High Schools Knockout Volleyball Finals
Wauchope High School travelled to Homebush to play in the
final 16 teams in the state for the knockout Volleyball finals
on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25
th July 2019. Captained
by Molly Styles, the girls were seeded to play a powerhouse
side in Ryde Secondary College in the first game to achieve
a position in the top 8 teams. After a marathon 2 hour, 5 set
game (set 1 25 – 23 WHS, set 2 27 – 25 RSC, set 3 26 – 24
RSC, set 4 29 – 27 WHS, set 5 15 – 13 RSC) Wauchope
lost to Ryde. An awesome game that involved some of the
best Volleyball seen throughout the tournament. The girls
then went on to win their next 3 games in the tournament
defeating James Meehan HS in 3 sets, Ballina High School
in 2 sets and then Baulkham Hills High School in 3 sets. This
placed them 9th in the state. This is the culmination of hours of training in their own time and pro-
gression through many knockout games to even make the state
finals. I would like to thank the parents who have helped get
them to this level and for all their support and assistance over
this entire year coming to support at games, transporting the
players and just being so encouraging to what the girls have
been able to achieve. It is truly remarkable from a little country
school.
The mighty Wauchope High School
Girl's Rugby Team continued their
fantastic run at state level today defeating
Leeton High School, Callaghan Senior
College Newcastle and Nyngan High School
to make the final of the U18's CHS Champs.
Unfortunately a state title wasn't to be and we
went down to Westfields Sports High in a
bruising encounter. 2nd in the State. Well
done all.
Thank you coach....Mr Taylor

Wauchope wins 44th Cumberland visit It took until the third and final day of competition, but Wauchope High School has successfully retained the Parsons Memorial Shield in the 44
th annual Cumberland Interschool visit. This
year’s event was closely contested throughout, with Cumberland seeking to achieve their first ever win on Wauchope soil, but again they feel agonisingly short as the locals won every contest on Friday, when the shield was on the line.
Day One began straight after the Welcome Assembly with Wauchope claiming victory in the Junior Boys Touch 7-5 and the Open Girls Hockey 2-0. Jade Millward scored both goals in the Hockey. Cumberland countered with an emphatic 6-0 win in the Open Boys Soccer and a victory in the Mock Trial.
This took us to the first ever Futsal night held at Wauchope as part of the competition, and as was the case last year, the action was fast and furious in all four matches and provided excellent entertainment for the large crowd in attendance. These games were also split 2-all, as Wauchope won the two Girls matches 3-0 and 2-0, while Cumberland dominated the Boys 7-1 and 8-0. At the end of Day One, the scores were level at 8 points each.
Some morning drizzle on Thursday was fortunately not enough to cancel the Athletics, and there were some tremendous performances by athletes from both schools. Brave runs from Ellie Raymond, Callum Jones, Molly Styles and Grace Kucera contributed to a terrific team effort by Wauchope which allowed them to take both the Boys and Girls Athletics points.
Cumberland seemed deflated after the losses and this seemed to set the tone for the day as Wauchope went on to win the Open Girls Touch 17-0, Open Boys Touch 12-3, Junior Girls Touch 8-2, Open Girls Softball 12-4 and Open Girls Netball 44-9. The only bright point for Cumberland was another big win in the Junior Boys Soccer 6-1 with Kurt Ward scoring the lonely goal.
At this point, it appeared that Wauchope was powering to victory with the score at 20-10, but the second night session changed the complexion of the visit completely. The visitors decimated Wauchope in the basketball particularly, winning the Junior Girls 18-10, Junior Boys 61-1, Open Girls 25-23 and Open Boys 39-19. They also took the Open Boys Volleyball 3-1, but Wauchope managed to win the Open Girls Volleyball with a polished 2-0 result, leaving the overall score delicately poised at 22-20 going into the final day.
Wauchope started the last day on the front foot to easily win the Junior Girls Netball 27-7 and then pulled off a nailbiter in the Open Boys Netball to escape 17-15. The Open Girls Soccer team were simply too classy in a 6-0 win and the Open Boys Tennis finished in a 3-all draw, making the final
overall score 29-21, giving Wauchope yet another victory.
Recent retiree Neville Parsons came in on behalf of the Parsons family to present the shield to the Wauchope captains Flynn and Caitlin and spoke about the history of the visit after it started in 1976. Neville also presented the Most Valuable Team Member plaques to Reece Anderson and Charlotte Wilton for Wauchope, and Tim Marks and Jocelyn Lay for Cumberland.
Wauchope High and the team members from both schools would like to thank the Parsons family for their ongoing commitment to this event, as it remains the highlight of the school calendar and a source of pride for the participants and the Wauchope community. We would also like to thank the families who took billets in this year,
as this is critical to the organisation of the event. As always, a great number of friendships were created, which is why the visit continues to be so successful.
Late last term Mr Houlahan visited the Liberty
Domestic and Family Violence Office in Port
Macquarie in order to make a donation to this
service. As the name implies this organisation
provides services for people who are victims of
domestic violence in the district.
The donation was a sum of $100 which was
raised through the collection of recyclable
containers which were collected in the school
grounds over the last 12 months. This meant that
1,000 containers were collected that did not go
into landfill.
It is hoped that over the rest of the year more containers will be collected to further aid this worthy cause.
Mock Trial Team
Last Thursday the Wauchope High School Mock Trial team made the trip to
Coffs Harbour for the North Coast Final of this competition. Our opponent was
the formidable Trinity Catholic School, based in Lismore, who made the state
final last year in a competition that started with over 200 teams.
Our form up to this point was outstanding with Wauchope winning all 4 of our
cases to date as had our opponents. We were the defence where our witness,
Larnah Smith had, allegedly, defrauded an elderly gentleman in a cyber-love
scam. Our case was not strong as Larnah admitted to the fact that she lied
about her age, name, and occupation to the victim. She was hammered about
these facts in cross examination although she claimed mental health issues
were the cause of her predicament.
Her supporting witness was Tyler Mathews who was a lifelong friend. Although
supportive of the defendant his credibility was dubious due to the close
relationship between the two. Tyler argued strongly but was like a sailor with his
feet in two boats, thus in a perilous position.
Trinity’s witnesses held all the cards, the victim a poor, lonely man who was only
looking for love. Our first barrister Matt Gibbs hammered him about his motives
for sending Larnah money. Naïve, yes, sending money to someone they had
never met.
Their second witness was a police officer of 25 years standing so was very
credible. This officer presented factual evidence to the court which made it
difficult for Piper Theofanou, our second barrister to discredit.
Piper received a nice complement from the Judge in regard to her closing statement achieving an almost
perfect score. Ellen McKittrick stepped in for this case to be the solicitor as Grace was in Los Angeles on a
family holiday. Although Grace was missed Ellen performed very well providing great support to Matt and
Piper.
Marie Aly, acting as the Court Officer, carried out her duties with a quiet assuredness.
Alas, Wauchope was just pipped on the post and lost the trial by the barest of margins, even closer then
Manly’s mighty win over Melbourne on Saturday night. The team is now eliminated from the competition
for 2019. Trinity was a very strong opponent and will go deep into this competition.
Credit must go to Mr Johnson for managing the team when Mr Houlahan was on his European sojourn.
The most credit should go to the team that won 80% of its cases this year. Matt, Piper, Larnah, Chloe,
Grace, Tyler, Ellen and Marie have developed advocacy skills which will aid them in their future
endeavours.
Donuts were shared by the team although after Mr Johnson and Matt ate 6 each there were none left for
Mr Houlahan.

10 Students and 1 staff member had decided they were interested in visiting the
United States of America.
For the past 2 years, (2017-2018) students were saving to pay off this adventure,
applying for passports and entry visas into the USA. 18 Days of travel, including
Los Angeles, San Diego (where students and staff were hosted by fabulous
American families) and San Francisco.
A visit to La Jolla Cove (pronounced La Hoy-ya). A small coastal area
where the constant wave action has worn little caves and holes in the rock
walls. These are also littered with pelicans and seals. We were able to
walk up very close to them as they sunned
themselves before the rain returned. The
behaviours of the students was probably more
interesting than the wildlife themselves.
Afterwards, since Seaworld was closed for the
day and the rain began to fall, we went to a shopping mall to spend the
rest of the day dry and warm. We went to the movies and I can say
that now that I have seen Spiderman – Into the Spiderverse, I don’t need to see it again.
We spent the next day with our hosts at school. This is where we went to each of the classes
our hosts had on the day. The students were mesmerised with the content and amount of work
completed in each lesson.
We spent the weekend with our hosts. Many spent the weekend relaxing, others went further
site-seeing whilst others went camping. The NFL playoffs were also on for us to watch on
television.
Martin Luther King Public Holiday
Since we had missed visiting
Seaworld on our allocated day, we
had re-organised to visit today. What
a place to visit. It was spectacular.
An amazing amount of sea creatures
to sea up close and sometimes
personal. Touch tanks where you
could touch and feed a variety of
rays and fish that would eat the dead
skin cells off your hands and arms.
There were some rollercoasters for those that needed a bit more of a thrill
but the Orcas were the highlight. Their grace and power as they swim,
jump and perform in front of the crowd was overwhelming. Be prepared to
get wet. The amount of water that is displaced as they swim, tail slap and
jump is unbelievable.
The weather was fantastic for us today. Some didn’t make the day as they had pre-organised
to go camping on this long weekend. They too thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
From here, it was back to our host schools to then return to our families away from home for
the last night. Our hosts put on a surprise for us, with a feast back at Granite Hills High School.
A wonderful mixture of foods for us to indulge in and reflect upon the time with our hosts that
Days 12 –16
January 17th - 21st 2019
G’Day USA is back in 2021
Hayley Mitchell from Educational World Travel (EWT) will be at the School’s Library on Tuesday
13th August from 6pm till 7pm to talk to interested students and their parents/carers about the
upcoming trip to the USA.
Travel will be in January 2021 during the school holidays.
A pamphlet outlining the trip and its cost was handed out on Monday’s assembly. If you are
interested in having your child visit the USA then they can get the pamphlet (if they have not
already done so) from Mr Grimson in the Mathematics Dept. The tear off slip must be returned to
him or the front office ASAP.
Students will have 18 months to pay for the trip.
Feel free to contact Mr Grimson at the school if you have further questions and come along to the
information evening.

was about to come to an end.
What a great feast. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals as if it was a
big family gathering and everyone interacting. Afterwards, to burn
off some energy, the kids decided to play Frisbee football outside.
With it getting late and very dark, a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee would
have been ideal. It didn’t take long for our American friends to
grasp the idea behind the game and it became competitive but
friendly.
As the night wrapped up and we returned to our home away from home, the emotions of our visit began to set in. Many students began to be upset that this was their last night with them.
These students were the participants in this amazing opportunity in 2019, would you like to be
included in the next trip in 2021? See below for details
Year 11 Biology Field Trip
As part of their mandatory pattern of study preliminary Biology students are required to undertake
practical work. Wauchope High students undertook an ecological survey of the rock platforms at
the Southern end of Shelley Beach. They were practicing surveying skills such as running a
transect and using quadrats to evaluate population abundance and distribution of common
invertebrates. The students were excellently behaved, learned a lot and had a great day. The
highlights included finding a pair of large common octopus that were happy to play with the
students.
